An Upper Nazareth Township police officer kicked in the door of a home this morning that had a fire in the chimney because he heard dogs barking inside, police said.
Emergency crews were summoned at about 7:40 to a home in the 3047 Bath Pike for a report of a dwelling fire. Township police officer Jacob Abel arrived, saw the chimney fire and heard dogs barking inside the house, police Chief Alan Siegfried said.
Abel kicked in the door to free the dogs and then searched the rest of the house. Joyce Piazza, 56, who rents the home, was found sleeping in a bedroom and was escorted out by Abel, Siegfried said.
Piazza escaped without injury, police said. Siegfried said fire officials told him the chimney flue cracked and fire from a wood-buring stove spread into the house walls.
