Central Catholic QB Brendan Nosovitch named 3A state football player of the year

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Brendan Nosovitch guided the 2010 Central Catholic football team to its final victory Friday night.

He continues to win awards for his season-long excellence.

Nosovitch was voted Pennsylvania's Class 3A player of the year in balloting by sportswriters from across the state after leading the Vikings to a 16-0 record and the PIAA Class 3A title with a 28-27 win over Bishop McDevitt. The junior quarterback accounted for 4,758 yards of total offense and 68 touchdowns this season while becoming the first player in state history to post back-to-back seasons of at least 2,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing.

Nosovitch established single-season school records with 3,111 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes. He is already Central Catholic's all-time leading rusher and passer, helping the Vikings win back-to-back Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 Class 3A championships before capturing a state title this year.

"It's really unbelievable with all the accomplishments this year, but I wasn't expecting that," Nosovitch said by phone Tuesday when notified about the award. "I knew I had a good year. I definitely got a lot better this year and just improved a lot. I think that's what got me there, and also the guys around me that do so much."

Nosovitch's supporting crew also was rewarded for this season, as he was one of seven Vikings to earn a spot on the 2010 Pennsylvania Sportswriters Class 3A All-State Football Team. Nosovitch nabbed a first-team spot as an all-around athlete. Bishop McDevitt senior Matt Johnson was picked as the first-team quarterback after finishing No. 5 on the state's career passing-yardage list.

Central Catholic senior linebacker Shane McNeely, junior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas, junior offensive lineman Tad McNeely and senior offensive lineman Jared Pitts all joined Nosovitch on the 3A all-state first team. Sophomore running back Colin McDermott and junior cornerback Noah Robb were both second-team all-state picks.

"That's a great way to go out," Central Catholic coach Harold Fairclough said. "Seven guys, wow. You look at it as a lot of respect throughout the state of Pennsylvania."

Shane McNeely, the LVC's defensive MVP, recorded 90 tackles (70 solo), including a team-best 16 tackles for loss. He also had seven sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery despite missing most of the 3A state semifinal against Archbishop Wood and the entire state final against Bishop McDevitt with a left ankle injury.

Gulyas, Nosovitch's No. 1 target, finished the season with single-season school records of 78 catches, 1,282 receiving yards and 19 touchdown catches. Tad McNeely and Pitts were the leaders of an offensive line that averaged 428.9 yards and 41.4 points per game. They also were starters on the defensive line, combining for 13 sacks.

McDermott finished his first varsity season with a team-leading 1,667 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. His 279 yards in the state quarterfinals against Clearfield established a single-game school record.

Robb finished fourth on the Vikings with 72 tackles (59 solo). He also had four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, three tackles for loss and one sack.

"Everyone did a great job," Fairclough said. "Noah has come the farthest of anybody. This year he committed to taking it to the next level and just went out and played and excelled. Week to week, we put him on some of the best players in the state."

One local player, Pius X junior wide receiver Matt Camilletti, was chosen for the Class A all-state team, getting a second-team spot. He had 53 catches for 932 yards and 10 touchdown catches for the Royals. His 125 career catches are a school record.
