The Lehigh University football team, fresh off clinching the Patriot League title and earning its first FCS playoff berth since 2004, is carving out a national reputation.
The Mountain Hawks are ranked No. 22 in the country in two national polls released on Monday — the FCS coaches poll and the The Sports Network/Fathead.com top 25.
It is the first time Lehigh has been ranked in a national poll since the end of the 2005 season when the Mountain Hawks were also ranked No. 22 after a 8-3 season.
In the coaches poll, Lehigh is sandwiched by No. 21 Liberty and No. 23 Cal-Poly.
In The Sports Network rankings, Jacksonville is No. 21 and Cal-Poly is again No. 23.
Villanova and New Hampshire, the only two teams to defeat Lehigh in 10 games this season, are ranked ahead of the Mountain Hawks. Villanova, the defending FCS national champ, is 15th in both polls, while UNH is No. 13 in the coaches poll and No. 14 in The Sports Network rankings.
Delaware, coached by Emmaus native K.C. Keeler, is ranked first in both polls.
The FCS playoffs begin on Nov. 27.
Lehigh will look to extend its six-game win streak playing Lafayette at noon Saturday in Easton in the 146th edition of college football's most-played rivalry. Then the Mountain Hawks will find out who they will be playing next during a FCS selection show at 10 a.m. on Sunday on ESPNU.
Also on Monday, senior kicker Tom Randazza was saluted as the Patriot League's special teams player of the week. Randazza had 10 points, nine on three field goals, in Lehigh's 24-7 win at Georgetown. He also recovered a fumble on a kickoff that led to his third field goal.
