Kalas' kid to sing "God Bless America" at Game 6

FROM KEITH GROLLER

San Francisco gave us Tammy Nelson of something called "Beach Blanket Babylon" singing "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch of Thursday's Game 5.

Nelson wore something resembling the San Francisco skyline on her head.

She didn't sing it badly, but her appearance seemed to be, uh, pure San Francisco.

Philly will counter with Kane Kalas, the son of legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas, singing the song during the seventh inning on Saturday night.

It terms of pace of game, the singing of "God Bless America" doesn't help, but it is a nice tradition that began after 9/11.

Kalas' kid singing figures to be one more highlight of what's shaping up as a special night.

With his deep, opera-like voice, Kane Kalas wowed the crowd and brought a few tears to the eyes of fans by singing the National Anthem on the night of April 17, 2009 -- the first game at Citizens Bank Park after the passing of his father.

It was a spectacular performance, especially considering he just 19 and a student at the University of Miami at the time.

He should receive a spectacular ovation on Saturday night.

His father singing "High Hopes" on the video screen has become the Phillies postgame tradition since April of 2009. It puts people in a good mood as they leave the ballpark, much like "New York, New York" has Yankees fans singing as they leave Yankee Stadium.

Of course, tonight, Saturday night, those Yankee fans are only singing blues and they'll go to sleep with visions of Cliff Lee pitching in pinstripes dancing in their heads.
