Phillipsburg High School football team rolls over Plainfield in season opener

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

PHILLIPSBURG | It was one of those season openers that defied logic.

Phillipsburg High School's football team turned the ball over on two of its first three plays from scrimmage.

Furthermore, the Stateliners didn't run their first play of the second half until 1:43 remained in the third quarter. And the special teams allowed a 79-yard kickoff return.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

Well, only if you played for the Plainfield Cardinals.

Dana Lee ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and Matt Deery returned two punts for scores to lead P'burg to a 56-0 non-conference romp at Maloney Stadium on Friday night.

Quarterback Justin Scuorzo overcame a sluggish start by completing 7 of 10 passes for 104 yards. P'burg's defense held Plainfield to 16 total yards and three first downs.

"We were sluggish, lazy at times," P'burg coach Bob Stem said. "We have lots of things to shore up. We had to use a couple time outs trying to get people in the game. We've got to get on top of all that.

"(Overall) I thought we came off the ball and executed. And Deery had an outstanding game. What a good kid he is. He's very dangerous. We've got to get the ball in his hands a lot more."

P'burg fullback Gerald VanDeCruz lost a fumble on the first series. The Stateliners regained possession on an interception by Deery. But Scuorzo was intercepted on the next play by Cardinals linebacker Allen Brown.
