High School Football: Week 2 Capsules

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Emmaus (1-0) at Whitehall (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Whitehall running back Eric Fiore ripped off 161 yards in a season-opening win over Blue Mountain. Emmaus held him to 36 rushing yards in a 21-19 regular season loss last year. Which number will he come closer to Friday?

Emmaus quarterback Nate Fick enjoyed a solid starting debut against Germantown last week, throwing for 111 yards and completing 69 percent of his passes. The Green Hornets will need similar proficiency to beat a Zephyr team expected to be among the LVC's elite.

By the numbers: Emmaus' defense held Germantown to 0.7 yards per carry last week, while Whitehall averaged 6.6 yards per carry against Blue Mountain. The winner of the Emmaus run defense/Whitehall run offense matchup will go a long way in determining which teams starts LVC play with a victory.

Nazareth (1-0) at Easton (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Easton's defense looked as stingy last week as it was last year, limiting Pennsbury to 13 points, six of which came on a final-play touchdown. The Red Rovers' defensive line, led by Dave Caldwell, helped hold Nazareth star running back Chuck Dibilio to 49 yards in last year's District 2-4-11 Class 4A quarterfinals. A similar effort would all but guarantee Easton a third win over Nazareth in the last two years.

By the numbers: Sean Sauerzopf averaged 15.3 yards per catch last week for Nazareth. The Blue Eagles need him and Kris Kent to stretch the field and give Dibilio running room.

Northampton (1-0) at Liberty (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Liberty shredded Glen Mills for 376 rushing yards last week despite featuring an overhauled backfield. Juniors Michael Harris and Devon Jones led the ground game in Week 1. What will they do for an encore?

Northampton had four players run for at least 35 yards last week, topped by senior Chad Fenon's 77 yards. The Konkrete Kids could have a hard time matching that production against a Liberty defense that allowed 2.98 yards per carry against Glen Mills.

By the numbers: Liberty scored 21 unanswered points to pull away for a 31-6 win over Northampton last year. The Konkrete Kids have a lot of players back who experienced that loss, so they should be motivated to prevent a repeat performance by the Hurricanes.

Bethlehem Catholic (0-1) at Allen (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Bethlehem Catholic's offense had no success last week against Ohio power Ursuline's first-team defense. The Golden Hawks should have a chance to get on track this week against the Canaries, who allowed 49 points to Boyertown last week.

Bethlehem Catholic senior quarterback Luke Petro threw for 95 yards and two scores in last year's 37-0 win over Allen. The Golden Hawks need a good effort from him this week ahead of their Week 3 meeting with Central Catholic.

By the numbers: Allen committed three turnovers last week against Boyertown. It cannot start winning LVC games without limiting its giveaways.

Dieruff (0-1) at Parkland (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Parkland junior quarterback Kyle Stinner threw for 183 yards in his starting debut last week while completing 10-of-16 passes. This would be a great week for the Trojans to continue working on their passing attack, as Dieruff will have a hard time matching up with their skill-position players.

By the numbers: Pocono Mountain East's defense held the Huskies to one first down in shutting them out last week. Parkland's defense will be looking to duplicate the Cardinals' success against Dieruff after surrendering 39 points to Harrisburg.

Freedom (1-0) at Central Catholic (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

In the spotlight: Freedom figures to try to keep the ball away from Central Catholic's offense, meaning it will lean on running back Eddie Elliott and the rest of its deep backfield. Central Catholic senior linebacker Jacob Snyder-Scipio, who had seven tackles and an interception last week against Downingtown East, will be one player trying to slow the Patriots' ground game and give the Vikings' offense the ball.

By the numbers: Central Catholic had four receivers catch at least two passes last week, so Freedom will have its hands full defending the pass.
