The Spring City Red Sox advanced to this afternoon's state championship game with a 7-6 win over the host Boyertown Bears. The Bears scored 3 runs on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth, but two 2-out runs in the 9th were the difference for Spring City. Boyertown's season has come to end, but Spring City moves on to play Pennridge in the title game. The Red Sox have also clinched the state's second berth to national regionals.

All-Bethlehem battle for Allentown title
FROM KEITH GROLLER
I am here at Pocono back on the racing beat today for the NASCAR races this weekend.
But I am keeping an eye on what's going on with the area basketball and baseball leagues,
In basketball, the Allentown Summer League has come down to all-Bethlehem championship final.
It will be Freedom vs. Liberty for the title at 7 p.m. Tuesday on Court 3 at Cedar Beach.
Liberty will be going for its second consectutive summer league crown.
There are always some interesting sub-plots when the Hurricanes and Patriots get together, and this one has the added element of a key player changing schools. Izell Dickerson, a slick, quick guard for the Pates last year, is now with the Hurricanes.
Not saying there is anything suspicious with this transfer. I am told there was a legitimate move involved here.
However, all the movement going on in the city of Bethlehem -- we hear several Liberty football players will be at Freedom -- has to be a concern to the rest of the league. Of course, no one seems to have totally stable rosters these days.
My feeling on transfers is clear. Either take the rule prohibiting transfers for athletic reasons off the books or impose an automatic, cut-and-dried rule that forces any transfer to sit out a certain percentage of his team's games (40 percent? 50 percent?) as a deterrent to the parental shopping and recruiting that goes on and seems to be going on more than ever before.
Much too much movement is going on in my opinion. And it seems like everybody now is looking the other way.
As for the title game, Liberty is probably the favorite. It has been the most solid, more consistent program and has the best player in Darrun Hilliard, if he's available on Tuesday night.
No matter what happens, it has been an interesting summer and it's going to be an even more entertaining winter.

Spring City Downs Pennridge
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
Spring City and Pennridge entered Friday night's Game 13 at Bear Stadium facing much different scenarios. Pennridge, by virtue of its Game 11 victory on Thursday night, had already clinched a spot in Saturday's championship and a coveted spot in next week's national regionals. Spring City, on the other hand, was facing elimination for the third straight day following its loss on Tuesday to Millcreek. Pennridge opened the scoring, but Spring City was too much in the end, winning by an 8-2 count.
Spring City will play Boyertown Saturday at 12:30 in Game 14, with a national regional berth on the line, as well as a spot in the state title game versus Pennridge. That game will follow about 40 minutes after Game 14's conclusion.

Boyertown Knocks Out Millcreek
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
The host Boyertown Bears stayed alive in the State Tournament, with a 11-3 win over Millcreek in Game 12. Despite giving up an early run, the Bears put away the Region 8 champs, ending Millcreek's most successful playoff run ever. The Bears will move on to Saturday's play, facing off with local rival Spring City at 12:30. The winner will meet Pennridge for the State Championship in the game that follows.

Durham completes sweep by blasting IronPigs, 9-2
FROM THE MORNING CALL
It was an "odd" night for Drew Carpenter.
The IronPigs right-hander had no problem with Durham in the even innings Friday night.
The odd innings, however, were another story.
Carpenter allowed a combined 10 baserunners and five runs in the first, third and fifth innings as the Bulls rolled to a 9-2 win over Lehigh Valley before the season's 17th capacity crowd of 10,000 at Coca-Cola Park
The IronPigs (44-63) hit into a team-record five double plays, all in the first seven innings. One came with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth inning, and another when Neil Sellers hit a rocket right at first baseman Chris Richard with runners on first and second in the seventh.
Durham (66-40), which came into the game with its second eight-game winning streak of the season, completed a four-game sweep and finished the season series against the IronPigs 7-1. After being held to a .236 average in the first three games of the series — 39 points below their season average — the Bulls ripped 14 hits in the finale including three each (with three RBIs each) by Richard and Justin Ruggiano.
Also, the soon-to-be four-time International League Southern Division champions got only four singles and three RBIs in the series from the league's home-run and RBI leader, Dan Johnson.
Carpenter (7-7), who allowed seven hits and walked three (one intentionally) in six innings, struggled from the start. Desmond Jennings ripped the game's second pitch to the wall in right center for a double, and Carpenter later hit Ruggiano to put himself in a first-and-third, one-out jam. Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly, and Richard ripped the first of his two RBI doubles to give Durham a quick 2-0 lead.
Two innings later, Carpenter issued a pair of walks around a strikeout to set up Richard's second run-scoring double, increasing the Bulls lead to 3-0.
A leadoff double by Jennings led to two more Durham runs in the fifth This time, after moving up to third on Elliott Johnson's second sacrifice, he scored when Ruggiano doubled down the left-field line. Carpenter struck out Johnson, then intentionally walked the left-handed hitting Richard to face the righty-swinging Angel Chavez. But Chavez came through with a single to right to drive in the second run of the inning.
The Bulls added a run off Michael Stutes in the seventh on singles by Elliot Johnson, Ruggiano and Richard, then snapped their odd-only trend by scoring three times in the eighth. Two scored on Ruggiano's bases-loaded ground-rule double when a fan got a hand on his drive high off right-field wall, and the other on a broken-bat single by Dan Johnson.
The IronPigs had eight hits but they were more than offset by the five double plays, matching a mark set in the franchise's 17th game on April 19, 2008, at Syracuse.
The first three baserunners against Richard De Los Santos (10-5) were erased on double plays before the IronPigs loaded the bases in the fifth on a walk to Andy Tracy and singles by Chris Aguila and Melvin Dorta. But the big inning evaporated when Sellers bounced in a 6-4-3 double play, allowing Tracy to score.
Two innings later, singles by John Mayberry Jr., Tracy and Dorta cut the deficit to 6-2 and left runners at first and second with one out. But that inning ended when Richard speared Sellers' line drive seemingly headed for the right-field corner and beat Dorta to the bag to complete the double play.
Mayberry and Dorta each had two hits. Ozzie Chavez had a fourth-inning single and has now hit safely in 13 of his last 17 games.

Nats ruin Oswalt's Phillies debut with 8-1 victory
FROM THE MORNING CALL
WASHINGTON (AP) — Craig Stammen carried a shutout into the seventh inning and the Washington Nationals roughed up Roy Oswalt in his Philadelphia debut, halting the Phillies' eight-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory Friday night.
Oswalt (6-13), a former 20-game winner acquired from Houston in a four-player trade Thursday, allowed five runs — four earned — and seven hits in six innings. He walked two, struck out four and hit two batters.
It was another tough start against Washington for the right-hander, who lasted only 2 1-3 innings, yielded four runs and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes when he faced the Nationals in Houston on May 31.
Stammen (3-4) went 6 1-3 innings, and gave up one run and five hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Jayson Werth homered for the Phillies.
Adam Kennedy had a season-high four hits for the Nationals, who have won three of four.
Nyjer Morgan led off the Washington first with a triple and scored on Kennedy's groundout for a 1-0 lead.
Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz's throwing error set the stage for two runs in the Nationals third. Stammen singled, Morgan was hit by a pitch and Kennedy tried to bunt the runners over. Ruiz pounced on Kennedy's bunt single and threw to third, but third baseman Greg Dobbs had left the base uncovered to charge the bunt and Ruiz's throw sailed into left field.
Stammen scored and Morgan went to third on the error. Ryan Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Josh Willingam doubled in two runs in the fifth after Kennedy doubled and Oswalt hit Adam Dunn with a pitch.
Werth led off the Phillies seventh with a solo shot to left, his 15th homer of the season.
In the Washington seventh, Roger Bernadina hit a two-run, bases-loaded double and Ian Desmond hit a sacrifice fly.
NOTES: Philadelphia SS Jimmy Rollins returned to the lineup after missing three games with a bruised left foot. … Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said he would employ a closer-by-committee approach following the trade of RHP Matt Capps to Minnesota on Thursday night. … RHP Stephen Strasburg, who was scratched from Tuesday's start and placed on the 15-day DL on Thursday with right shoulder inflammation, will play catch in the outfield either Saturday or Sunday, Riggleman said. … Oswalt had a forgettable first at-bat as a Phillie. Bernadina charged what might have been a single to right and threw Oswalt out at first. … Philadelphia's Placido Polanco went 0 for 4, ending a 24-game hit streak against Washington. It was the longest active streak against an opponent in the majors.

Allen out of Summer League playoffs
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Allen threw me a curveball tonight, and it was better than the ones Roy Oswalt will throw for the Phillies.
Since when did the Phillies become the Yankees of the National League, by the way?
I had written a column for the paper talking about Allen participating in the Tournament of Champions at Catasauqua next week and I wrote that the Canaries could be looking at a scheduling conflict on Tuesday night because I thought there was a great chance that they could be in the summer league final at Cedar Beach while also playing in a quarterfinal game in the TOC.
I will be honest. After seeing Dieruff struggle in both the Stellar and SportsFest tournaments, I really didn't think they would be within 15 points of Allen in the quarterfinals. So, I was confident that I wouldn't have to change what I wrote in my column.
But there's always great uncertainty when it comes to summer basketball. The biggest uncertainty is who's going to show up on a given night and I have been told that Allen was missing many of its key players due to another AAU event.
So, sadly for their many fans, it was bye-bye birdies. And sadly for me, I had to scramble near deadline to change my column around and take out that potential schedule conflict on Tuesday night.
Allen was upset by Dieruff and the Canaries' bid to win three high school titles in one summer is now over.
You now have a greaet chance of all Bethlehem final between Liberty and Freedom.
Liberty, last year's summer league champ, will be a heavy favorite in tonight's semis against Bangor and Freedom will be favored against Dieruff. Give the Slaters credit, though, for a solid win over an Emmaus team that had been impressive in both tournaments.
The Hurricanes must have been very impressive, too, especially defensively in a 47-18 rout of Bethlehem Catholic.
Here are Thursday's scores and tonight's matchups courtesy of John Hrebik:
Here are the results of the first night of the Allentown Varsity Boys Basketball League:
Freedom 62, Faith Christian 46
Liberty 47, Becahi 18
Dieruff 52, Allen 47
Bangor 53, Emmaus 42
Friday's Semifinal Matchups:
6:15 --------------- Liberty vs. Bangor
7:15 --------------- Freedom vs. Dieruff

Valdez drives in winning run in 11th
FROM THE MORNING CALL
PHILADELPHIA — Nothing like a little motivation.
Wilson Valdez, out of the starting lineup much of last week because manager Charlie Manuel wanted a little more pop in his offense, drove in the game-winning run with a single in the 11th inning, giving the Phillies a 3-2 victory over Arizona on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park.
Valdez had two other hits and helped turn a pair of run-saving double plays
"Valdez was the big star of the game," Manuel said.
Although Valdez has started the last three nights in place of of Jimmy Rollins, who was still out nursing a bruise on his foot, Manuel had been putting Valdez at second base with Chase Utley out. But lately, Manuel had been opting to shift Placido Polanco over to second base and put Greg Dobbs at third with the hope of generating more offense.
Valdez said he wasn't bothered by Manuel's decision.
"I was waiting for the time that I would get the opportunity to play," Valdez said. "I'm here to help the team. I feel happy. We're in a race and hopefully we keep doing it."
The Phillies (55-46) have now won a season-high eight in a row (their longest winning streak since taking 10 from July 8-21, 2009) and 11 straight at home. They sit 2 1/2 games in back of first-place Atlanta, which lost to Washington on Thursday.
The victory also meant the Phillies won all seven games on the homestand, their first perfect homestand since Aug. 6-12, 1991, when they went 7-0 against the Cubs and Expos.
Kyle Kendrick didn't have his best stuff and struggled with his location, but managed to keep Arizona scoreless until Miguel Montero hit a solo home run in the sixth that brought his team within 2-1.
Mark Reynolds singled in his next at-bat, prompting Manuel to hand the reins to his bullpen.
Although Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson escaped the seventh and eighth without giving up a run, J.C. Romero allowed Arizona to tie it up.
The Phillies, who acquired Astros star pitcher Roy Oswalt for J.A. Happ and two prospects earlier in the day, went down in order in the eighth and ninth, but had the bases loaded in the 10th for N.L. RBI leader Ryan Howard.
The slugger, though, struck out on three pitches.
Carlos Ruiz drove in the Phillies' first run in the fifth, putting them ahead 1-0. Raul Ibanez made it 2-0 with a home run in the sixth.
Moyer won't need surgery: Dr. Lew Yocum, the leading performer of Tommy John surgeries, did not recommend elbow surgery for Jamie Moyer.
The Souderton native does have a strain of his flexor pronator and UCL, and is expecting to miss the rest of the season.
"If I rehab diligently and allow it to heal, and then prudently start rehab and take my time with it, space it out where maybe I don't throw until October, December and everything is healed, I [should] have great strength and next year I'll be ready to go," Moyer, 47, said.
Moyer's contract with the club is up after this season, so it's likely he's thrown his last pitch as a Phillie.
"That's up to the organization," he said. "I would love that opportunity. But I don't know what their plans are."

Pennridge In To National Regionals With 6-4 Win
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
Pennridge's dream season will last at least another week, as they are assured of a bid to national regionals. Not only that, but they also find themselves with a spot in the championship round of the state tournament, they can finish no worse than second.
Things didn't look good early for the Region 2 champions, they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but quickly squandered that margin. Boyertown loaded the bases with nobody out and eventually got three runs. Pennridge's starter settled down and ended up pitching a complete game, keeping the Bears off balance for much of the night.
Pennridge chipped away with a run here and there, taking advantage of an over-aggressive base running attack by Boyertown. The Bears had two runners thrown out in one inning on the basepaths, one at third and another at home. Those runs proved to be the difference.
Final score was Pennridge 6, Boyertown 4. Pennridge advances to game thirteen where they will have a tough matchup with Spring City who will be fighting for their season. Boyertown will take on Millcreek at 4pm.
By luck of the draw, the winner of the Boyertown-Millcreek game would advance to national regional play if Pennridge wins tomorrow night. If not, the second bid will be decided Saturday morning before the state championship game.

Spring City Jumps All Over Hopewell
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
Hopewell's great aspirations for the state tournament were put to an end this afternoon, when they dropped a lopsided game against Region 3 champion Spring City. Considered two of the top teams in the tournament, many expected this matchup in the winner's bracket final.
Spring City was never in real danger in this one, as they took advantage of some spotty pitching and a rarely invoked substitution rule to break the game open. Hopewell's manager visited the mound twice in one at-bat to take out his pitcher, but while doing so an assistant coach entered the playing field to talk things over with the rest of the squad. According to Major League Baseball rules, which ALB follows, this results in an automatic ejection.
Hopewell's manager was forced to leave the playing area and the pitcher they had attempted to remove had to finish the batter he was facing. He gave up a basehit which turned into a three run fiasco after a throwing error. That extended Spring City's lead to five, and they never looked back.
Spring City advances to take on Pennridge Friday evening at 7:30pm. If they win, they'll take on the winner of Boyertown-Millcreek with a national regional berth on the line.

Millcreek Eliminates Upper Dauphin In Game 9
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
Millcreek called on right-hander Bobby Roach to make his first start of the season. He didn't disappoint, as he went the distance and surrendered just two hits. The performance will surely be remembered as one of the top outings by a pitcher in this year's state tournament.
Millcreek plated five runs en route to another big win for their program. This marks the furthest they have ever made it in the postseason. They'll look to extend their season again, this time they'll take on Boyertown at 4pm. In the event of another victory, a Pennridge win tomorrow night would hand them a national regional berth.

IronPigs fall in 11 after tying the game in the ninth
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Brian Mazone was perfect through five innings Thursday afternoon.
The left-hander certainly didn't deserve a loss after a masterful eight-inning outing against Durham Thursday afternoon
John Mayberry Jr. saved the veteran what would've been his league-leading 12th loss when his ninth-inning solo homer sent the matinee into extra innings.
But as has been the case the last few nights, in the end nothing could prevent the Bulls from beating the IronPigs.
Ex-IronPig J.J. Furmaniak beat his former team for the second time with a go-ahead RBI double in the 11th inning, lifting Durham to a 2-1 win before a capacity crowd of 10,000 at Coca-Cola Park.
Furmaniak, hitting after Desmond Jennings just beat the relay on what would've been an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play, smoked a pitch from Brian Gordon (1-2) to the wall in right center. Jennings was running all the way, and when the ball caromed past Mayberry to center fielder Chris Duffy, the Bulls runner easily got to the plate before the relay, snapping the 1-1 deadlock.
Furmaniak now has five hits in 40 at-bats with runners in scoring position, including two in 20 at-bats with two outs. Three of them, including both of his two-out hits, have come against the IronPigs, giving Durham (65-40) two wins against his former team.
"It's just totally coincidental," said Furmaniak, who is hitting .273 in 43 games for the Bulls. "If you look at my overall numbers with guys in scoring position, they're not that good. It's just happened that the two times I've gotten key hits have been against Lehigh."
Mayberry took Mazone off the hook with one out in the ninth when he drove an 0-1 pitch from another ex-IronPig, R.J. Swindle, into the bullpens in left for his 12th homer of the season. It was the second blown save of the series for Swindle and only the fifth of the season for Durham.
Mazone was brilliant, retiring the first 15 batters he faced on just 52 pitches and limiting the league's top hitting lineup to three singles while walking nobody in eight innings.
"I've never really thought about it," Mazone said. "My goal is just to go as deep as I can and when I leave a game, leave it with a chance to win."
Angel Chavez broke up Mazone's perfect-game bid by slapping a 1-2 pitch into right center leading off the sixth. And as they did the previous night, when they scored the go-ahead and winning runs without hitting the ball out of the infield, the Bulls pushed their first run across in the same fashion.
Joe Lobaton and Fernando Perez both beat out perfect bunts up the third base line for singles, loading the bases with nobody out. Jennings followed with a bouncer that sent shortstop Brian Bocock into the hole, where his only play was at third for a force on Lobaton as Chavez scored.
"That's absolutely frustrating," said Mazone, who threw 66 of his 96 pitches for strikes. "You're always one broken bat, one mistake, from trouble. But that's baseball."
"Teams that have a real good winning record, you get a lot of things go your way," Furmaniak said.
Both runners moved up on Furmaniak's bouncer to third, but Mazone got out without further damage by striking out Elliot Johnson on a 3-2 change-up.
The IronPigs got a break when Tampa Bay, Durham's parent club, limited Jeremy Hellickson, one of baseball's best pitching prospects, to three innings for unknown reasons. But the IronPigs still managed just six hits — including two each by Ozzie Chavez and Brian Bocock — and struck out 16 times. That increases their strikeout total over the first seven games of the homestand to 76, including 65 in the last five games.
"We don't have a lot of offense right now," IronPigs manager Dave Huppert said. "We've got to put the ball in play better and we've got to get men in scoring position. Besides the home run today we only had three guys get to second base."
Duffy provided one of the stranger moments in three years at Coca-Cola Park when he misjudged Elliot Johnson's two-out line drive in the ninth. The ball went right over his glove and into his shirt, and third base umpire Jason Bradley awarded Johnson second base (he was also given a double) under the rule covering lodged balls.
"That has to be the most freakiest thing I've ever been involved in," Duffy said. "He knuckled the hell out of it … I felt my shirt and it was like, 'Oh,' " Duffy said. "But I don't want him getting a hit; I deserve an error on that."

Brown impressive in debut, a 7-1 Phillies win
FROM THE MORNING CALL
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia has a new crush, and it happened quickly — in just one date as a matter of fact.
The sweet swing, the long strides, the eye-popping numbers had hearts aflutter at Citizens Bank Park.
That crush is Domonic Brown, and he already has won the hearts of Phillies fans everywhere.
Brown was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in his major league debut, which was a 7-1 victory over Arizona on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
"I think he's got a bobble-head coming out Thursday," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said with a big chuckle. "I suggested it."
Manuel was joking of course, but that puts into perspective just how much of an effect the rookie had on energy at Citizens Bank Park.
"I definitely heard how excited the fans were for him," said pitcher Roy Halladay, who threw his major league leading eighth complete game.
The victory, helped by the Phillies going 12-for-35 (.343) with six doubles, marked the Phillies' seventh in a row and 10th straight at home, their longest winning streak in Philadelphia since winning 16 straight at Veterans Stadium from July 15 to Aug. 28, 1991.
"It definitely feels the way it's supposed to feel," said Raul Ibanez, who was on base four times, twice with hits and two other times with walks. "We're playing well together and expecting good things to happen and that's what it takes."
Brown, called up Wednesday to replace the injured Shane Victorino on the 25-man roster, hit a double off the right-field wall in his first big league at-bat in the second inning, scoring Jayson Werth for the Phillies' first run. He also singled and scored a run in the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh that made it 6-0.
"A couple of bombs would have been nice," Brown said with laughter. "But no, it went great; let's not get head over heels."
Clearly, Brown isn't about getting attention, but with the hype and his first-game numbers, it sure seems like he'll be getting a lot of it.
"Everyone was watching to see what he did," Manuel said. "The players, they were watching him play of course."
Carlos Ruiz and Werth also had big games. Ruiz was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a season-high three RBIs and a run scored. Werth was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Halladay (12-8) allowed just one run with two outs in the ninth inning. He struck out nine and didn't walk anyone.
Manuel said he didn't think of pulling his ace after the eighth.
"Why not? Go ask him," Manuel said. "I don't think he'd let me take him out. If I was pitching a shutout, I wouldn't want my manager taking me out."
The Phillies (55-46) wrap up their seven-game homestand on Thursday against Arizona.

Bulls score twice in the eighth to edge IronPigs, 3-2
FROM THE MORNING CALL
A lineup that ranks among the most potent in the International League managed to score the tying and winning runs Wednesday night without hitting the ball out of the infield.
Durham used three walks, a bunt single on an attempted sacrifice, and a double-play grounder to score twice in the eighth inning as the Bulls frustrated the IronPigs for the second straight night, rallying for a 3-2 win before 9,336 at Coca-Cola Park.
Durham (64-40) scored four times in the ninth against closer Scott Mathieson to grab a 5-3 win Tuesday.
"We've been right there," said Melvin Dorta, who celebrated his return to the lineup after a 13-game absence with two hits including a solo homer. "That's how this game is. A few little mistakes can really make a difference."
Playing its first game since June 24 without Domonic Brown, who was promoted to the Phillies earlier in the day, the IronPigs (44-61) had just five hits against Durham starter Brian Baker and four relievers.
The IronPigs had a 2-1 lead on solo homers Andy Tracy and Dorta when manager Dave Huppert turned to Mike Zagurski (1-3) to face two lefties in the middle of the Bulls lineup, IL RBI and home run leader Dan Johnson and Chris Richard. But Zagurski walked both on 3-1 counts.
Then, Joe Dillon dropped a bunt up the third-base line, hoping to move both runners into scoring position. He did that — and wound up with a single when Neil Seller's off-balance throw pulled Dorta off first, loading the bases. Zagurski then walked Dioner Navarro on another 3-1 pitch to force in the tying run.
"Nothing good happens when you walk guys, and I walked three tonight," said Zagurski, who thought he didn't get any breaks from home plate umpire Jason Bradley. "I thought I made some quality pitches I would have liked to have," he added.
That brought in Michael Schwimer, who got ex-IronPig J.J. Furmaniak to bounce into the IronPigs' third double play. However, Richard scored from third with what turned out to be the winning run.
"Schwimer did a great job to minimize the damage," Huppert said. "Our bullpen has been our strength all year and the last couple of nights they just didn't get it done; that happens sometimes. You just have to forget about it and come out the next night and do your job."
Baker, making just his fifth start in 30 appearances this year but second against the IronPigs, allowed four hits over five innings, striking out six and walking two.
Tracy had two hits, beginning with a single up the middle in the second. Baker retired the next seven IronPigs he faced before walking John Mayberry Jr. But Mayberry, running on a 2-0 pitch, was caught stealing for the first time in 14 attempts — a move that cost the IronPigs a run when Tracy hit the next pitch high onto the concourse in right center for his 14th homer.
An inning later Dorta jumped on Baker's first pitch of the sixth and lined it just inside the left-field foul pole for his third homer, giving the IronPigs a 2-0 lead.
"The first at-bat I was just trying to see some pitches, and he threw me a first-pitch fastball," said Dorta, who was out with a right wrist sprain. "I looked for that pitch again the next time up and luckily I was able to get my barrel on it."
Lehigh Valley had four baserunners the rest of the way. The IronPigs stranded two runners in the eighth when Chris Aguila lined out to left to end the inning, and Dorta added a one-out single in the ninth off Winston Abreu before Abreu struck out the final batters to wrap up his 14th save.
The IronPigs struck out three times in the ninth for the second straight night and 11 times overall, including three each by Chris Duffy and Sellers.
Brandon Duckworth wasn't quite as dominating as his last start, when he struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings, but was solid enough to leave with a chance to earn his third straight win. The right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed one run in six innings, walking three and striking out four.

Boyertown Cruises To 7-0 Win Over Hopewell
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
Hopewell certainly has the top pitcher in the tournament, their ace literally hasn't lost a game since last year; while Boyertown may very well have the deepest pitching staff in the state again this year. Their unsung number two starter Steve Price turned in the top pitching performance of the tournament thus far.
Price went eight innings, yielding just three base hits while shutting out the Region 6 champions. Hopewell entered the game with high aspirations, as many believed them to be the top team in Boyertown this week. They couldn't get anything going though, and a lackluster fielding performance ultimately did them in.
Boyertown got their first run in the bottom of the first when lead-off hitter Ryan Schwager snapped out of his hitting drought with a long double. He stole third and ended up scoring on an errant pickoff throw by the catcher.
The Bears got four runs in a third inning that Hopewell would like to forget. Two errors apiece by the pitcher and third baseman in the inning led to the scoring. In fact, the two errors attributed to the third basemen came in back to back at-bats.
Boyertown has won many tournaments this way, playing their patented style of small ball and capitalizing on the mistakes of their opponents. They used some dazzling defensive plays to back Price and their reliever who finished up the ninth with a relatively quiet inning.
Hopewell drops into the loser's bracket where they will have an interesting face-off with Region 3 champion Spring City. Considered two of the top teams in the state, one of these very good teams will be going home early. That game is slated for 4pm.
Boyertown takes on Pennridge in an all Region 2 winner's bracket final at approximately 7:30pm.

Pennridge Tops Millcreek 16-3 In 7
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
After a huge win, and an apparent upset, yesterday afternoon, Millcreek was looking to take the next step and establish itself as a top team in the 2010 PA Legion State Tournament Wednesday. The Region 6 champs got by Spring City by a 7-6 score yesterday. Today, they weren't so lucky.
Pennridge jumped on them, early and often. The Rams posted sixteen runs on twenty-one hits in just seven innings of work. Pennridge got started with three runs in the top of the second. They scored another run in the third, which Millcreek countered in their half of the inning.
Four more runs were plated by Pennridge in the fourth, pushing the lead to 7-1. They didn't stop there, as they piled on two more in the fifth. They put it away in the sixth with a six run outburst, pushing the tally to 15-1. The Rams plated their final run in the seventh.
Millcreek was able to get two runs in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough to stave off the tournament's first mercy rule victory. Final score: Pennridge 16, Millcreek 3 in seven innings.
Of Pennridge's twenty-one hits, only three were for extra bases. Pennridge advances to the winner's bracket final where they will take on fellow Region 2 competitor Boyertown.
Millcreek drops into the loser's bracket, where they will take on Upper Dauphin tomorrow at 12:30pm.

Upper Dauphin Stifles State College's Bats
FROM THE PA LEGION BASEBALL WEBSITE
State College entered this week's tournament with the most potent offense in the state, averaging almost fifteen runs per game in last week's region seven tournament. After two games, they've been eliminated after posting just four total runs.
Following a suprising 2-1 loss to host Boyertown on Tuesday evening, the boys in blue couldn't get anything going against Upper Dauphin's Ben Ancheff. Ancheff did it the old fashioned way, as he allowed his defense to make the plays behind him as he struck out just two batters in the game.
Ever the workhorse, Ancheff threw nearly 140 pitches in the victory while surrendering thirteen hits. He did what he needed to do, giving his teammates more than enough room to work with to win the elimination game.
The outcome marks a very disappointing tournament for State College, who was back on the state scene after a few year hiatus. Their offense never got going like they did last week. Their pitching was very solid in the opener, but faltered in their second game. They finish their season with another strong showing, finishing 34-10 overall with another regional title under their belt.
Upper Dauphin now finds themselves right in the thick of things, they'll take on Millcreek in the first game of the day Thursday at 12:30pm. They'll have the chance to jump on a team that may very well still be shell-shocked from the big loss they took this afternoon.
If Upper Dauphin can win that one, they'll have a chance to send their ace back to the mound on Friday in an attempt to get into the championship round.

Victorino's MRI results are in
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Now all the questions can stop and the chatter can begin.
The Phillies placed Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday and called up Dom Brown from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place on the 25-man roster.
Victorino, 29, had an MRI on Wednesday morning which showed he has an abdominal strain that he suffered in Tuesday night's game. He was hitting .250 with a career-high 15 home runs and a team-best 20 stolen bases.
Brown, 22, has combined to hit. 327 (112-for-343) with 46 extra-base hits, including 20 HRs and 68 RBIs in 93 games for Double-A Reading and the IronPigs.
Brown will wear No. 9 and will be available for tonight's game.
There's a chance you could see him in the starting lineup if manager Charlie Manuel decides to start Jayson Werth in center field and put Brown in right field.

Michael Flesher earns Eagle Scout badge, scholarship for creating bird sancutary at pediatric cancer retreat.
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Standing at the edge of a driveway, Michael Flesher finally understood the magnitude of the task ahead.
Dozens of hours of labor had brought the recent Nazareth Area High School graduate to this point: a pile of birdhouses, bat houses and birdseed heaped before him, waiting to transform a backyard into a bird sanctuary.
Looking back, his father said there were plenty of times the now-18-year-old worried the job was too much to finish.
But he only had to look into the faces of the children staying at the Angel Field Family Center, a retreat in Nazareth for pediatric cancer patients and their families, to see the good his hard work would bring.
He buckled down and pushed through. Using donated materials, Flesher worked from August 2008 to May 2009, sometimes alone, sometimes with family and friends, to get the job done.
Now his charitable effort has put two feathers in his cap. It earned him an Eagle Scout badge — and earlier this month a $1,000 scholarship from Kohl's Kids Who Care program. The department store also put him in the running with 200 other young people for a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship.
But the soon-to-be Penn State freshman says the real reward was bringing more beauty to the bed-and-breakfast that provides a respite for young cancer patients.
"We visited, and I was impressed," he said. "The property is just huge — we had to clear a ton of tall grass."
A lifelong Scout, Flesher knew he wanted his Eagle Scout project to focus on pediatric cancer.
Flesher knew the toll treating cancer takes on kids. For years, his now-7-year-old cousin has made the trip every Tuesday from New Jersey to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for chemotherapy.
He first proposed a video drive, collecting movies for the kids at CHOP to watch during their treatments. Ultimately, the idea fell through.
Enter Northampton native Doug Sheriff and Angel34, a non-profit advocacy and financial assistance organization founded by his daughter Nicole, who fought cancer for two years until she died in 2004 at age 15. One of Nicole's happiest times during treatment was a family vacation to Cancun, where she bounded around with an energy her parents hadn't seen in a long time.
So the Sheriffs founded Angel Field, a rambling house on a four-acre estate, complete with a pool and super-size deck. Flesher read about the retreat in a local newspaper and knew what he wanted to do.
Sheriff had planned to convert a portion of the property into a bird sanctuary for some time as a way of offering young visitors a close-up view of nature. He just never had the manpower before Flesher.
"He was gung-ho from the very beginning," Sheriff said. "It also touches a population of kids that not many people are aware of. It's a very touchy subject. It's something that when Mike approached us, he was very sincere about."
Starting in August 2008, Flesher's team of friends and family put in 500 hours planting, landscaping and installing bird houses and feeders, with the Scout sweating out more than 100 hours himself. In the heat of summer, when temperatures routinely hit the 90s and often went higher, he'd sometimes cool off in the pool behind the property.
All plants were donated, many trucked up to the site by his mother.
By May 2009, Flesher could look out from the house and see his handiwork: a carefully cultivated acre, dotted with birdhouses and flitting avians. And he still got to do his video drive, collecting more than 800 movies to stock the library at Angel Field.
Flesher was nominated by his mother for the Kohl's prize. Winning it would be nice, he said. But as father Carl puts it, it's all gravy.
"For him to get the Kohl's scholarship and be up there getting Eagle Scout, that was a very rewarding moment," the elder Flesher said. "One of the proudest moments of my life."
