Hershey will remember plenty about the 2010 baseball season. The big hits. The big innings and the chance to chase history. But only Conrad Weiser made some Friday night at Blair County Ballpark.
A tactical effort by pitcher Zach Guiles, coupled with timely hitting, afforded the Scouts a clean 6-2 Class AAA victory under the bright lights.
Some called the Scouts a mirror image of Hershey, a program that tripped at the regular-season gate but dusted itself off to play top-caliber baseball at the most important time.
That was Hershey through three robust PIAA wins. But when the engaging Trojans reached down for that extra hit, or well-located pitch it simply wasn't there.
Not against Guiles, who allowed seven hits through five innings. And certainly not against reliever Jared Neiheiser, who faced just seven Hershey batters in the final two innings.
Neiheiser, who only starts when Guiles in on the mound, pitched in two sacrifice hits to initiate Conrad Weiser's push to gold.
The Scouts attacked Hershey starter Luke Drayer from the beginning, rolling up eight hits on the southpaw in 3 2/3 innings. CW's four earned runs against Drayer would hold.
Hershey's offense was limited a Brett Santangelo RBI single in the fourth and a Derik Wilson RBI single in the fifth. There were additional opportunities against the reigning District 3 champions, but the Trojans left a solid eight men on base.
Hershey, hoping to add to the program's PIAA title grab in 1982, finishes its campaign at 20-9.
