Durham Bulls shortstop J.J. Furmaniak came back to haunt his old team, delivering a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bulls to a 3-2 International League victory over the visiting Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Furmaniak, who played for the IronPigs last season, drove in Angel Chavez and Desmond Jennings. Ryan Vogelsong, who started the ninth for the IronPigs, suffered the loss.
The IronPigs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Domonic Brown and Melvin Dorta. The Bulls pushed across a run in the seventh on Furmaniak's RBI single, which plated Jennings.
Dorta was 3-for-4 for the IronPigs. Lehigh Valley starter Drew Carpenter pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, no runs, three walks and struck out four.
The IronPigs return home Tuesday to face Rochester in a partial doubleheader. The completion of a suspended game, which will be picked up in the second inning, starts at 6:05 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled game.
Philadelphia Phillies starter J.A. Happ is expected to make a rehab start for the IronPigs in Game 1. Former major leaguer Brandon Duckworth is slated to start in Game 2 for Lehigh Valley.
