Bethlehem Catholic wins, Parkland, Pennridge lose in state volleyball openers

Bethlehem Catholic rallied to top Meadville in the first round of pool play Friday morning in the PIAA Class 2A boys volleyball championships at Penn State University.

Meanwhile, Parkland and Pennridge lost their first matches in the 3A championships.

District 11 champion Bethlehem Catholic lost its first game, 25-15, to District 10 champion Meadville before winning the next two games, 25-20 and 25-16. Also in Becahi's pool (A) Friday, Northeastern defeated Garden Spot 3-0. In Pool B, Ambridge defeated North Pocono 3-0 and Eastern York defeated Huntingdon 3-0.

In 3A, District 7 champion North Allegheny swept District 11 runner-up Parkland 3-0, and District 3 runner-up Exeter topped Pennridge, the District 1 champion, 2-1.

Pool play continues throughout the day, with the winner and runner-up in each pool in each classification advancing to Saturday's semifinals at Penn State.
