Nazareth resident Connie Huth said this evening she was visiting New York City with friends Saturday when they stopped to rest on a park bench in Times Square three blocks from the SUV that held a would-be bomb.
Huth, a 52-year-old dental assistant who lives on Broad Street, said, “We were sitting on the benches and someone came up and closed off the gate. A policeman told us a car was on fire and they were afraid the gas tank would explode.”
What was actually burning, city officials said, were fireworks sputtering in the back of the sport utility vehicle. Despite the fireworks, the two 5-gallon cans of gasoline next to them and three propane tanks behind the seat, the device was a dud.
From her location, Huth said, she could see crowds in the area of the SUV moving away as police evacuated Times Square.
“Nobody was panicking. It was more like confusion,” she said. “The scariest thing was the next day when I saw it on the Internet. I was taken aback by that.”
