BAD STORMS EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON

Thunderstorms forecast for this afternoon could bring strong winds, torrential downpours and large hail to the region, according to the National Weather Service's Mt. Holly, N.J., station.

The hazardous weather outlook for eastern Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia regions, as well as Delaware, new Jersey and northeast Maryland says the main threat will be mainly damaging winds and large hail. However, heavy rain could produce localized flooding problems and a coastal flood advisory goes into effect tonight from 6-11 p.m. for southern and central New Jersey.

The weather could be very active today with a cold front coming from Central Connecticut across eastern New York and two low pressure systems off the New Jersey coast.

A report from northern New Jersey said skies suddenly darkened and skies picked up around 8 this morning, indicating the storms are starting to arrive into the region.

The National Weather Service says storms generally will be moving northeast to southwest, which is not the typical pattern for our area.

The more severe activity is expected west of the Interstate 95 corridor, where the precipitation pattern is likely to linger into Saturday or about a half day longer than forecasters expected earlier this week.

For the Lehigh Valley, the National Weather Service says the showers and thunderstorms will arrive mainly after 2 p.m. today, with the greatest likelihood for showers and thunderstorms tonight before midnight.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s today, but will fall to below 60 degrees tonight as the cold front arrives.

Temperatures should be in the low- to mid-70s tomorrow and Saturday. There continues to be a chance for showers and mostly cloudy skies both days

Sun and warmer temperatures are expected to break out Sunday and Memorial Day, with highs forecast to be 83-85 degrees. A chance for showers and thunderstorms returns Tuesday night and Wednesday.
