Vice President Joe Biden will be in the Lehigh Valley on Thursday to kick off a $6 million Recovery Act project that will expand Ben Franklin TechVentures on the Lehigh University’s South Mountain campus.
Later, he’s scheduled to attend a fundraiser at the Blue Grillhouse on William Penn Highway in Bethlehem Township to support Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan’s Democratic bid to oust Republican Charlie Dent from the 15th Congressional District seat, according to a White House news release. Neither event is open to the public.
Awaiting his arrival at Blue will be a contingent of Tea Party representatives protesting expanded government and costly spending programs.
“We’re having a meeting out along the road at Blue," Tea Party organizer Bryan Eichfeld said. "We’re going to have a protest.”
Eichfeld said the reason they’ll be targeting Biden is because “He’s just a representative of our out-of-control government.”
Eichfeld noted the protest will come on the day income tax returns are due to the Internal Revenue Service.
He said he doesn’t know how big the group will be, but said there are 1,150-plus members in the local Tea Party.
Eichfeld said anyone who wants to join them can sign up by going to their Web site, lehighvalleyteaparty.org, and send an RSVP.
