Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain. That's retroactive to Tuesday.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said today an MRI revealed a mild to moderate strain of Rollins' right calf. Amaro says he hopes it will take two to four weeks for Rollins to recover.

Coach Charlie Manuel on a national radio show today used the word "tear" when describing the injury and said Rollins is "hurt pretty bad," according to philly.com. The severity is "between a Grade 2 (which involves some partial tearing of the calf muscle) and 1."

Philly.com reports Juan Castro will fill in at short-stop, and Shane Victorino will move to the leadoff spot in the batting order. Carlos Ruiz will move up to Victorino's No. 7 spot in the batting order, and Castro will bat eighth.

Rollins, the 2007 NL MVP, was injured during warmups before Monday's home opener against Washington. The 31-year-old three-time All-Star was off to a hot start, hitting .391 and scoring eight runs in seven games.

To replace Rollins on the 25-man roster, the Phillies called up Wilson Valdez from the triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
