Villa Maria wins 2A state title

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Different year, same result: Villa Maria Academy held off York Catholic for the Class AA girls title.

Kayla McBride had 29 points and 11 rebounds and the Victors fended off a late York Catholic charge in a 52-44 win, claiming their second consecutive crown Friday to start the PIAA's marathon weekend of championship basketball.

Kady Schrann led the Fighting Irish with 21 points.

Villa Maria (28-2) went up 20 early before York Catholic (28-4) began chipping away. Karli McFatridge's 3 with 4:30 left got the Irish within three, and Schrann drew York Catholic within 45-44 with a jumper.

But McBride helped the Victors hold on, getting big buckets down low and hitting four foul shots in the final 2:15. Villa Maria beat the Fighting Irish 56-51 in last year's title game.
