CENTRAL CATHOLIC GIRLS LOSE TO VILLA MARIA SATURDAY

Ellen Cannon scored every point Villa Maria Academy managed in the first 7 minutes and 57 seconds of the fourth quarter.

Brooke Angelos scored the two that mattered most to the Hurricanes, bringing a stunning end to Central Catholic's season.

Angelos took a handoff at the top of the key, knifed toward the basket and flipped in a layup at the buzzer, lifting Villa Maria to a 38-37 win over Central Catholic in a PIAA Class 3A girls basketball quarterfinal this afternoon at Reading High's Geigle Complex.

District 11-champion Central Catholic (27-3 overall) took a 37-36 lead when Taylor Maldonado (13 points) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 6.6 seconds to play. Villa Maria, the District One runner-up, grabbed the rebound when Maldonado missed her second shot, advanced the ball to midcourt and called a timeout, setting up the winning play.

Cannon had eight fourth-quarter points and finished with a game-high 19. The two that Angelos scored to end the game – she finished with nine – will haunt Central Catholic.

Colleen Nosovitch finished her Central Catholic career with a team-high 14 points. Emily Johnson added six for the Vikettes.
