RCN TO REFUND PEOPLE

RCN Corp. said today it will refund $5 to Lehigh Valley customers affected by Sunday’s outage that disrupted service for about six hours.

The credit will be applied to accounts for customers who have a standard or high-definition converter box, regardless of whether those boxes were in use during the disruption.

RCN also said it will provide affected customers with a free trial of a premium movie service for an undetermined time. Randy Nungester, RCN general manager for the Lehigh Valley, will send an apology to customers as well.

“While Sunday’s unfortunate turn of events was beyond our control, our relationship with our customers is very important to us and we recognize that we disappointed many of them,” RCN spokeswoman Lisa Barder said.

The company has said the disruption occurred after the system that controls the programming guide for those boxes was corrupted, causing an error message to appear on screens. RCN said it is working with its vendor to ensure the problem does not repeat.

The outage lasted from 9 p.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday, disrupting coverage of the Olympics among other programs.

RCN said the outage was not related to a recent switch to all-digital programming in which customers were required to upgrade to digital boxes
