KEITH GROLLER TALKS TO CENTRAL BOYS COACH
From Keith Groller
Had a chance to talk to CCHS boys basketball coach Jim Rodgers on Sunday morning and not surprisingly, he was hoarse.
He said it was a touch of bronchitis, but I imagine it also had something to do with the time of year as well as the fact that he spent part of Saturday afternoon straining what was left of his voice to get through his team's win over Wilson.
CCHS was real leery of Wilson and why not?
The Warriors were known for their defense and have historically played Central tough in the 3A bracket.
Just two years ago CCHS had to go overtime to pull out a 34-32 victory over Wilson in the semifinals.
"Our game was typical of the one we had with them two years ago," Rodgers said. "You know never what you're going to get from them and Coach [Bob] Frankenfield doubled down on Shane [McNeely] just like he did against Carlos Pujols two years ago."
But McNeely, an all-league selection, still had the athleticism and playmaking ability to score 19 points and grab 11 rebounds.
This game was won at the defensive end by CCHS, however. The Vikings (12-11) overcame shaky 16-for-29 foul shooting held Wilson without a field goal and to just four points in the fourth quarter.
"Someone told me that Wilson was 0-for-21 from the field in the fourth quarter," Rodgers said. "I don't know if that was accurate, but they didn't have a field goal and we went into our bag of tricks, made some adjustments, and played pretty good defense."
Rodgers said that his team took its preparation for Wilson "very seriously." The Vikings hadn't played in exactly two weeks since the regular season finale against Allen.
"Even though we got in some scrimmages against Notre Dame, Northampton and Catty," he said. "I think the kids were sick of practicing. They needed to play a game again."
Now, they'll get right back into it with a semifinal battle Tuesday at 7:30 against No. 10 seed Saucon Valley, which has pulled two surprises so far in the district tournament against Colonial League foes Southern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh.
"I'm sure they're going to be viewed as the underdog and that's something they will have going for them," Rodgers said. "We had done a lot of homework on Northern Lehigh because as the Colonial League champ we thought we'd have a good chance of facing them. But Saucon is playing really well. When [6-8 center] Eric Frans asserts himself, he can be an effective offensive player and with his size and wingspan, he's also a force defensively. Plus, their point guard John Clark is a terrific player and they have other kids who can shoot 3s."
It's going to be a tough matchup, but just like two years ago, CCHS had to work hard to get into districts with a late surge and seems determined not to let that hard work go to waste in the tournament.
"These kids are excited and want to keep going," Rodgers said. "There was a point late in the regular season after we lost to Northampton when I began to question whether the kids really wanted to continue to keep playing. Now, there's no doubt about that."
And Rodgers has found surprising resolve from the strong contingent of football players on his basketball roster.
"You'd think they'd be tiring and wearing down at this point of the season, but instead they're getting stronger," Rodgers said. "They realize they can do something quite rare and specialand that's become district champs in both football and basketball in the same year. Our kids are always excited about playing at Allen and they're looking forward to Tuesday night's game."
It should be an interesting, entertaining week ahead.

SATURDAY'S RECAP FROM KEITH GROLLER
From Keith Groller
The Lehigh Valley Conference fared well on Saturday in District 11 boys quarterfinal round action.
Central Catholic whipped Wilson in 3A and both Whitehall and Nazareth posted solid victories over pretty good Mountain Valley Conference teams in 4A.
The one exception to the LVC's good day was Pocono Mountain East thrashing Freedom. Joe Stellato has to be disappointed with his team's 89-59 loss. He sounded so enthused on the radio on Saturday morning. The Cardinals are very talented, and very hungry. Coach Patrick Heaton always has his team playing with a chip on its shoulder, but still... a 30-point loss? Didn't see that coming.
The Cardinals are the last MVC team remaining and the last hope of ending a drought for current MVC members in district boys competition. Stroudsburg was the last current MVC team to win gold in 1999.
Parkland won district titles in 2000 and 2001 while members of the MVC, but somehow I don't think the MVC really counts those two.
Pocono East can very well win it all this year. They have been solid since summer.
But for now, we've got two great 4A matchups on Wednesday night at Freedom to spotlight. Pocono East vs. Whitehall in Game 1 and Liberty vs. Nazareth in Game 2. And this time Anthony Gonzalez is playing.
We've got a lot of quotes on Liberty and Nazareth about Saturday's games and looking ahead to the semis. We can share them here since there was no room in print.
From Nazareth coach Joe Arndt....
On Liberty: "It's going to be a tough battle against Liberty, but our kids are focused. We knew it last week already that Anthony Gonzalez was going to be back. We just have to be ready and play our style of game. He gives them a different look. He bumps Jarrod West outside. Anthony sees the court so well and makes things happen for them. He's the leader of their group, just like Danny Wilk is the leader of our group."
Arndt on Danny Wilk....
"We knew we wanted to go inside against East Stroudsburg North. We looked to run and got good penetration. Danny's our leader and makes us go. He's the driver of this bus."
(Wilk got the ball inside to Karl Keglovits, right, who had a big night against ES North).
Wilk on beating ES North by beating them down the floor....
"They wanted to get up and down the court and outrebound us. But we outrebounded them and got our running game going. Our game is to play defense, get the rebound, get it down there on the break and pass it around. People who think they're just going to run all over us are going to be surprised because that's what we like to do."
Anthony Gonzalez on playing Nazareth for the first time....
"We lost to them twice and I didn't play either time, so I definitely want to get a win over them. I definitely wanted to be out there against Nazareth [in the LVC semis]. When you see your guys down, you definitely want to pick them back up and do whatever you can do to help them. That was a tough loss. Money [Darrun Hilliard] took it hard. He lives and dies with each game. As a senior captain, I was trying to help
him out as much I could."
What does the University of Pittsburgh say about you playing basketball?
"They gave me the OK to play again. It was all up to them."
Liberty coach Chad Landis on how much Gonzalez (surrounded by four Allen players on the right) wanted to come back....
"If he didn't want to come back, all he had to do was get the doctor to say no. I think the Nazareth loss ripped his heart out, too. We self-imploded at the end of that one and he didn't like to see that. He's been with us for four years. Yes, he has played a lot of big football games, but he has also played in more big basketball games than anyone in Liberty history. He wanted to come back and made the commitment to do all the work in rehab and we jumped through all of the necessary hoops to make it happen."
What Gonzalez means to Liberty....
Landis said, "His return puts a smile on my face, I know that. Now we're back to that team we had early in the year that I loved. He wills us to wins. Now, I know he can't do that again just yet. But he gives us some options, some depth. He gives us defense, some rebounding. We are pretty formidable when we have all of our guys on the floor. There was no cat being left out of the bag with Ant. He wasn't cleared to return until Tuesday night and we didn't want to play him on Wednesday [against Bangor] without practicing. So, he practiced with us Thursday and Friday. He looked pretty good, so we thought we might as well get him out there. We played a zone tonight because we thought it would be effective against Allen and it also allowed us to rest him in the back a little bit more and extend his minutes."
Will Gonzalez be the difference against Nazareth?
"He helps us," Landis said. "He makes us better. He'll give us a little lift. But if the five guys we have on the floor aren't playing as hard as their five guys, it doesn't matter who our five guys are. We have to play as a group better than we did the last two times we played them. They just flat-out outplayed us in those last two games."

BETHLEHEM TWP. - The quarterfinals are complete at the PIAA District 11 Class AA wrestling championships at Freedom High School, with all the top seeds and 12 of 14 No. 2 seeds advancing to the semifinals later this afternoon.
Saucon Valley's Tyrone Deschler, seeded seventh at 125 pounds, was the first to pull an upset when he pinned Tri-Valley's Ty Shoffstall in the third period. In the same half of that draw, Constantine Filipos of Central Catholic scored a 4-2 overtime decision over No. 3 seed Eddie Faust of Northwestern to set up an unlikely semifinal match-up.
Later, Bethlehem Catholic junior Martin LaLuz pinned second seed Nick Forte of Mahanoy Area at 215 to advance to a semifinal meeting with Panther Valley's John Schaeffer. Schaeffer upset third seed Fran Roscioli of Wilson with a pin in the quarterfinals.
The top four in each weight class advance to next weekend's Southeast Regional at Wilson-West Lawn.

Sentence Includes Book Report
The Morning Call reports that an Upper Nazareth man was found guilty of misdemeanor theft for stealing $3700 worth of flooring material from a company he was working for.
Judge Kimberly McFadden, apparently found the man’s name amusing, Twist, and asked if he had any relatives named Oliver. She then tacked onto the sentence a requirement to write a book report on Dicken’s Oliver Twist. Failure to do so will result in a parole violation.
Maybe it’s me, but this type of action doesn’t seem right. Judges can pretty much do what they want and while there is no harm done in this case, it does seem a bit arrogant. What do you think?

BIG EAST CONFERENCE BANNED JIM HANEY
The Big East Conference has banned veteran college basketball official Jim Haney of Palmer Township and another veteran official from working in its postseason tournament in New York over errors made by Haney and his partners in a game between Louisville and West Virginia earlier this season.
The New York Post reported Friday that Haney, an Easton High grad, and fellow referee Mike Kitts will not be allowed to work in the Big East tournament which begins March 9 at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Contacted by e-mail Friday afternoon, Haney, who said he has worked 12 Big East tournaments in the past, confirmed the newspaper report but declined further comment.
Dan Gavitt, Big East Associate commissioner for basketball, had no comment on the matter in the Post article, telling the paper that disciplinary matters regarding officials are handled internally.
The third member of the officiating crew for that Jan. 30 game, Lee Jones, is committed to working the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
The Big East acknowledged "procedural and communication errors" the day after Louisville's 77-74 loss at West Virginia.
According to accounts, a loose ball sailed out of bounds with 6.7 seconds left directly toward the face of Kitts, who was standing under the Louisville basket. Because Kitts ducked and shielded his face, he was unable to make the possession call, and neither Jones or Haney, stationed near the 3-point arc, were in a position to make the call. According to the NCAA rule book, officials are to use the alternating possession arrow in such situations, which would have given the ball to Louisville.
Instead, Haney and Kitts reviewed the monitor at the scoring table. By rule, video reviews are not to be used to determine possession.
After Haney and Kitts, who received the Naismith Award as the nation's best referee last season, huddled, West Virginia was given possession. Although Louisville associate coach and former Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard told the Louisville Courier-Journal after the game that Haney told the Cardinals bench that he saw the ball go off a Louisville player, no signal was made until after officials checked the monitor.
"They were trying to see who it went off of, which is illegal," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said after the game.
"One of the procedure errors that was made was not clearly communicating possession of the ball," Gavitt said after the Big East's admission on Jan. 31.
Pitino, who was unhappy with several late calls in that game, told the Post he has "no ax to grind with those three officials.
"I think officials in the Big East, which is by far the toughest league to work, do a great job," Pitino told the newspaper. "But there have been a lot of errors this year that need to be addressed."
Neither Haney, Kitts nor Jones has worked another Louisville game since the incident.
The Big East also admitted to late officiating errors by a separate crew in Louisville's 80-77 loss at Seton Hall on Jan. 21. In that game, officials allowed a Pirates player -- who had stepped across the end-line while attempting an inbounds bass after hearing an inadvertent whistle with 0.7 seconds left to -- to step back out-of-bounds and make the pass again.

'70s rocker Tyler Grady is voted off 'American Idol' after his 1st live performance.

Nazareth's Tyler Grady, whose 1970s rocker persona won him a place in the Top 24 ''American Idol'' contestants but brought him derision from the show's judges Wednesday, was among the first four contestants voted off the show Thursday.
Surviving the cuts after 24 million viewers voted was 16-year country singer Aaron Kelly of Sonestown, Sullivan County, who had won the judges' praise for his rendition of Rascal Flatts' ''Here Comes Goodbye.''
Also among the two male and two female contestants voted off were Janelle Wheeler, 24, an Orlando, Fla., wine sales representative; Ashley Rodriguez, 22, a student from Chelsea, Mass.; and Joe Munoz, 20, a student from Huntington Park, Calif., who had largely escaped criticism from the judges. Four more will be voted off after performances next week.
''I'll always be a performer, no matter what,'' Grady said in a taped voiceover of a closing montage of the contestants voted off. ''It's definitely not the end.''
But when Ryan Seacrest asked his reaction after he was voted off, Grady said the judges waited too long to criticize him.
''I really like all the judges and I've really had a great time with them, but I didn't really get very much constructive criticism during Hollywood week and what they told me [Wednesday] was a little too late.''
The judges had told Grady on Wednesday that his version of The Guess Who's ''American Woman'' -- his first live performance on the show -- was ''cliched'' and ''shtick.'' That was in stark contrast to the show's season premiere, when he sang a sultry ''Let's Get It On'' to advance to the Hollywood round.
Grady had done a contemporary song -- Daughtry's ''Home'' from 2006, the year he was an ''Idol'' finalist -- to win a spot in the Top 24.
Grady was shown in a clip during the show reacting backstage to the judges' criticism: ''I just got murdered up there.''
By making it to the Top 24, Grady, 20, a 2008 Nazareth High School graduate and Temple University psychology student, had gotten further than any contestant from Lehigh or Northampton counties.
He now returns to his spot as drummer and singer in the Lehigh Valley band Wailing Waters.
Grady was the final contestant voted off at the show's end. But before being eliminated, Grady got significant attention on the episode, as host Ryan Seacrest showed film of Grady performing during Wednesday's rehearsals in boots, tennis socks and a bathrobe. Grady laughingly explained that he went to rehearsals that way '''cause I wanted to be comfortable and get ready,'' but was told that instead of going to wardrobe as he assumed, he had to go directly to rehearsals.
''I think it was the boots, tennis socks and robe combination that had us confused,'' Seacrest jokingly said.
''Yeah, I think the socks were the best part,'' Grady replied. Seacrest said, ''Well, you looked comfortable.''
Kelly got good news fairly quickly in the show -- the third male revealed as safe by Seacrest, who jokingly called the unassuming high school student ''the intimidating Aaron Kelly,'' making Kelly laugh.
Kelly, who has sung at fairs and festivals throughout the state and was a finalist on the show ''America's Most Talented Kids,'' was told Wednesday by acerbic judge Simon Cowell that his performance was good. ''I think absolutely, 100 percent you'll be here next week,'' Cowell said. He was right.
