With the annual Easton-Phillipsburg Thanksgiving Day football game just around the corner, a national television audience will be treated to a bit of nostalgia.
Under a deal struck by the Gatorade Co. and FOX Sports Net, a one-hour special on the Easton-Phillipsburg Replay game will air Nov. 29, on Fox Sports Net affiliates across the country.gatorade replay postgame dunkView full sizePhoto Courtesy of GatoradeReplay game head coach Bruce Smith, right, and coach Bob Stem get doused with Gatorade after Phillipsburg's win over Easton in April. Fox Sports Net doesn't have a Philadelphia affiliate, but its programming can be found on Comcast SportsNet, which is carried in the Lehigh Valley by RCN and Service Electric.
Because of a wrinkle in Comcast SportsNet programming that day, the Replay show will air at 1 p.m. It will air at 9 p.m. on most Fox Sports Net affiliates, but that conflicts with a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game that night on Comcast.
"We plan on airing it a bunch of times," said Comcast programming spokeswoman Linsey Heiser.
Other air times for the Replay special on Comcast SportsNet include 7 p.m. Dec. 1; 11 a.m. Dec. 3; 11 p.m. Dec. 5; and 9 p.m. Dec. 6.
Other dates may be scheduled as well, Heiser said.
The Replay game featuring players from the 1993 football teams was played April 26 at Lafayette College's Fisher Stadium. The original teams tied in the '93 clash, but Phillipsburg prevailed 27-12 in the rematch with unseasonable temperatures approaching 100 degrees. More than 13,000 spectators attended.
The program is part of a digital partnership announced today between Gatorade and FOX Sports Net. Seasons two and three of Gatorade Replay will air nationally on Fox Sports Net with extended programming planned in the featured rivalries' regional networks.
Seasons two and three are expected to air in 2010, but Gatorade said participating schools and teams have yet to be selected.
Gatorade hatched the idea for Replay last year and selected the Easton-Phillipsburg high school football rivalry as one of the best in the nation. The idea behind the game was to show how the spirit of athleticism and competition lives long after the game, according to Gatorade.
Players went through an intense, 10-week training program and practices leading up to the contest. The one-hour show Nov. 29 will follow the Easton and Phillipsburg players -- now in their 30s -- getting ready for the rematch as well as their interaction with each other and honorary game day coaches Eli Manning (for Phillipsburg) and Peyton Manning (for Easton).
It will come three days after the 103rd meeting of the current-day high school rivals on Thanksgiving Day.
