DARYLL DAWKINS NEW COACH AT NCC BASKETBALL

Lehigh-Carbon Community College has called a press conference for 3 p.m. Friday on its Schnecksville campus to announce that former NBA player Darryl Dawkins will be its new men's basketball coach.

Dawkins will replace Kevin Foley, a Central Catholic graduate, who left after four seasons to coach at Northampton Community College. Foley was 70-45.

Dawkins, 52, lives in South Whitehall Township and has become a popular personality in the Lehigh Valley area. He is married to a Catasauqua High graduate.

The man known as "Chocolate Thunder" was drafted in the first round, the fifth pick overall, by the 76ers in 1975. He was taken right out of Maynard Evans High School in Orlando, Fla. He played for the 76ers, Nets, Pistons and Jazz from 1975-89. He has also served as an ambassador for the Nets and does various basketball clinics.

Most recently he coached professionally, leading the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs in the United States Basketball League from 1999-2006. The ValleyDawgs won the league title in 2004. The team began playing its games at Stabler Arena and later moved to various high school locations before folding.
