SCORES AND NEWS

Lehigh Valley kicked off the Carpenter Cup baseball tournament by defeating Inter Ac/Independents 3-1 Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania's Meiklejohn Stadium in Philadelphia.

Parkland's Joe Abeln knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Liberty's Tyler Brong went 2-for-3.

A trio of Lehigh Valley arms -- Parkland's Andrew Kulp, Northampton's Mike Glassic and Whitehall's Pat Bet -- scattered just three hits and one earned run, despite surrendering 10 walks, and Parkland's Casey Cooperman pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Emmaus' Kyle Gable led off the seventh with a single and tacked on an insurance run on a sac fly by Liberty's Scott Kalama

Lehigh Valley returns to action Friday against SOL National/Bicentennial. The winner earns a spot in the semifinal round.

LV Softball Hall of Fame: Wednesday's Lehigh Valley Softball Hall of Fame induction ceremony was postponed by rain and reset for tonight at Pates Park. Dave Bilger, Dale Culton, Sally Whittaker-Kahan, Lisa ''Noisy'' Sommer and Brent Windsor are the inductees. The ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m.
