Moravian wins another Landmark Conference softball championship

Moravian College sports information director Mark Fleming has reported that John Byrne's juggernaut has added another conference championship and will be headed to another NCAA Division III tournament. Here's the report as the Greyhounds pounded host Susquehanna 8-0 in Selinsgrove for another Landmark Conference title: SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The second seeded Moravian College softball team won its fifth straight title after defeating top seed and host Susquehanna University, 8-0 in five innings, in the championship game Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove. The Greyhounds also captured their 13th straight conference championship and will be heading to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the 14th time in 15 years. Moravian will find out on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the NCAA Division III selection show at http://www.ncaa.com to find out where they will play. Moravian could go to one of four NCAA Regional sites – Amherst (Mass.) College, Christopher Newport (Va.) University, Eastern Connecticut State University or Kean (N.J.) University. The Greyhounds broke open a scoreless game with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior shortstop Brook Kowal led off with a single, and freshman outfielder Dior George (Liberty) followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas, senior pitcher Jenna Carmon reached on an error to load the bases. Sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst was hit by a pitch to score Kowal before junior third baseman Shannen Mohr (Parkland) connected on a two-RBI single to score George and Carmon. Freshman designated player Jenn Dalickas (Brandywine) followed with a two-run double to score Ernst and Mohr, and junior first baseman Amanda Dizinno connected on an RBI single to score Dalickas. Sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik (Liberty) reached on an error and would score when Kowal had an RBI double for her second hit of the inning. Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-0 lead on a RBI single by Dalickas. The Greyhounds had a 7-1 edge in hits with Kowal going 2-for-2 and Dalickas going 2-for-3 Mohr had a walk in the game to break the school career record with her 67th career base on balls. Carmon improved to 19-5 in the circle for Moravian with her 25th career shutout. Carmon allowed a hit while striking out two batters. Susquehanna used three pitchers in the game with Morgan Lewis taking the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings of action. DIGITAL NEWS CBS Home Entertainment has been hard at work lately reviving series which were perceived to be either dead or close to it, and this week is no exception. This week, we got announcements of releases of Melrose Place - The Final Season (Volume 1 and Volume 2) for a July 31 release and Touched by an Angel - The Fifth Season on July 24 (note that the series was released in half seasons for previous releases, so this is a "heavenly" change). But the biggest (and most unexpected) was the announcement for The Untouchables - Season 4 (Volume 1 and Volume 2), finally completing that classic series on July 24. That isn't all for CBS, though. According to this article, they also have Becker - The Fourth Season on the horizon, but it will be a CreateSpace MOD item from amazon.com. So, you won't find this in stores. In fact, we don't even know when it'll begin shipping as a MOD item, as no date is given. But as soon as we know more, we'll let you know. Shout! Factory has been very busy with releases lately, and they have a few more of interest to us which were announced just this week. The first one is actually not that big of a surprise, as Shout! had previously announced that they had acquired it, but gave no date at the time. Well, now we have a date (and a pre-order listing) for a series which Sony had abandoned, with The Rookies - The Complete Second Season. It comes on August 7 at a $44.99 MSRP. On the same day, Shout! has a value-priced collection of the classic sitcom Dennis the Menace with their release of Dennis the Menace - 20 Timeless Episodes, a two disc set which comes at a very low $12.99 MSRP Finally, we save for the end our "you knew it was coming, just a matter of it being announced" titles, or in other words, those DVDs of the current season of your favorite series. With the 2011-2012 TV season beginning to wrap up, it is about time that we get some announcements, and ABC Studios made plenty of them this week. These begin on August 21, with the release of Revenge - The Complete First Season. The following week, on August 28, comes Once Upon a Time - The Complete First Season, but this will be available not only on DVD, but also Blu-ray! Hopefully, that release will sell on Blu-ray, because ABC Studios has been a studio which often tends to try a season on Blu-ray and abandon it, which is what happened when one season of Grey's Anatomy was released on the high-definition format. But speaking of Grey's Anatomy, yet another week later, on September 4, look for Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Eighth Season... but only on DVD! The spinoff of that series isn't too far off, because if you move ahead just one more week to September 11, you'll get Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season. Naturally, with four consecutive weeks of releases, you've got to expect a fifth one, and you'll actually get two of them on September 18, with Castle - The Complete Fourth Season and Body of Proof - The Complete Second Season. All of this DVD madness from ABC ends on September 25 with Desperate Housewives - The Complete Eighth and Final Season. But if that isn't enough, you'll also be able to own Desperate Housewives - The Complete Series on the same day! That one isn't available to order yet, though.

Five Questions: Carm LaDuca discusses slipping on that Easton uniform

LaDuca talks about the thrills of putting on the Easton uniform on game days, He mentions the pros and cons of the new BBCOR bats used in high school baseball. LaDuca enlightens us on the experience of taking his team to Boston every other year to play Acton-Boxborough, coached by former Easton player Pat Grucela. He acknowledges the tireless efforts of his assistant coaches, and discusses his most thrilling seasons as a head coach.

Warren County natives to be featured on 'The Nate Berkus Show' on NBC

She immediately thought of her sister Kim Read, of Phillipsburg, who is a single mother, so she sent the show a message regarding the casting. "She never does anything for herself," Mantoni says of her reasons for thinking of Read. "She always puts her children first. She's very selfless." To Mantoni's surprise, a representative for the show called her almost instantly. As Mantoni discussed the family's back story, including her five siblings who were all raised in Warren County, the representative expressed interest in doing a makeover with every single one of them. "That came about in a very quirky way," Mantoni laughs. "We didn't think we needed makeovers." The siblings had lost their mother at an early age. Mantoni was 14 and another sister, Michelle Torre, of Asbury, was 19. "Mother was a fashionista," Mantoni remembers. Out of a need for the show to consolidate its schedule and make room for celebrity guests, Mantoni and Torre were the two who ended up being chosen for the taping. The episode airs 2 p.m. Monday on NBC.

Liberty clinches LVC East Division title in softball; Parkland stays hot

Liberty defeated Bethlehem Catholic 1-0 in a great pitcher's duel between Erin Wilson and Joelle Morey. Both teams had five hits, but the Hurricanes pushed across the game's only run in the second inning on a hit by Wilson (seen above in a past photo) With the win, Liberty (11-1) clinched the division crown and pushed defending champ Becahi to the brink of being eliminated from the LVC tournament. Elsewhere, Parkland smashed its way to an 11-2 win over host Nazareth, and Freedom, showing some spunk even as it plays out a disappointing season, stunned Easton 7-5, severely wounding the Red Rovers playoff chances. With Emmaus (7-4) set to win the West Division and Parkland (10-2) going to win the North, the focus is all on the wild-card position now. Just two league games remain for most teams and Whitehall (8-4) leads the wild-card race right now with Becahi (7-5) also having a decent chance to get in. Becahi must play Freedom and Easton next week. Whitehall, meanwhile, hosts Nazareth on Tuesday and Parkland on Thursday. The good news for Becahi is that it holds the tiebreaker edge over Whitehall because the Golden Hawks defeated the Zephs 3-1 earlier this week. So, if Whitehall wants to get into the league tournament, it better beat both Nazareth and Parkland. Northampton (5-6), Easton (6-6) and Nazareth (6-6) are all frankly in need of miracles, at this point, to advance to the LVC tourney, and Easton still needs one more win to qualify for districts.

Fry Sr. Memorial Field. The win gives the Trojans (13-4, 9-2) a one-and-a-half game lead over Nazareth (14-4, 8-4) in the LVC North Division. The Blue Eagles would still clinch a LVC Wild Card spot by winning its final regular season games against Whitehall and Northampton.

Moravian College softball team advances to the Landmark Conference finals

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER The second seeded Moravian College softball team advanced to the 2012 Landmark Conference Tournament Championship game for the fifth straight season, defeating host and top seed Susquehanna University, 1-0 in eight innings, in the winner’s bracket game in Selinsgrove on Friday. The Greyhounds, the four-time defending Landmark Conference Champions, will play in the championship round beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The "if" game would follow at 3 should Moravian lose its first game. Moravian, which has won 11 straight conference titles, needs to win just one game to earn its 14th trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in the last 14 years.

ArtsQuest sets second Sabor! Latin Festival, adds to holiday calendar

Latin Festival. The three-day festival is set for June 22-24 at SteelStacks and will feature a free concert by the Grammy-award-winning group, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, according to a news release. Local, regional and national artists are expected to perform, including: Luisito Rosario and his orchestra, Cubanoson, Jaja Matsimela, Santa Mamba and Beleza. Families can participate in arts and crafts, hula hooping, bilingual storytelling, a kids' DJ and a free Latin and Caribbean drum workshop. The festival will offer a motorcycle brigade, zumba classes and a photo exhibit. Easton Farmers' Market kicks off Saturday

The market, which opens 9 a.m. Saturday, is a source of tourism, Mayor Sal Panto Jr. said. At a recent meeting, city council debated a parking incentive to encourage farmers market visitors to shop at downtown businesses. But council could not arrive on a mechanism for the incentive. Panto discussed allowing farmers market customers to purchase a discount pass for the city parking garage after a $15 purchase at the market, but farmers market vendors typically don't issue receipts. Also, if the idea is to keep shoppers downtown, Panto said, giving an incentive only to farmers market shoppers does not seem fair. “We’re giving them an incentive that we’re not giving the rest of the merchants,” Panto said. He suggested providing downtown businesses with a stamp to validate parking for customers. The city is studying its parking situation. A town-hall-style meeting 6:30 p.m. May 22 at the Crayola Experience will allow residents to comment on parking, and the idea of parking incentives could come back at that meeting or later on in the parking review. Meanwhile, with a high of 78 degrees forecast by the National Weather Service, the market's opening day of its 260th season promises to be a positive start. But even bad weather wouldn't stop vendors. “The market will be running rain or shine or snow or anything in between,” farmers market manager Megan McBride said. That means no inclement weather should stop the festival from happening 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday from now until the end of November. To city council, the event is a way to distinguish the city. “It’s not just we who are impressed, but people who don’t know anything about Easton,” said Councilwoman Elinor Warner. It is also a place for locals to buy fresh fruits and vegetables otherwise difficult to find in the city. After 2010, when the farmers market began allowing food stamps, market attendance spiked in 2011 by 20 percent, and vendor sales increased 20 to 50 percent, according to McBride, who attributed much of the boost to the food stamps. “We do have a lack of a grocery store, especially in the downtown,” McBride said. “We’re on the verge of being a food desert.” This year’s farmers market will feature 45 vendors, four of them new farms, an area for local artisans and crafters, and events such as a bacon festival in November, the market’s birthday extravaganza on July 7 and an art exhibition and auction.

On Memorial Day, while most folks may not sit and watch television on Memorial Day, there are many shut-ins, elderly, homeschoolers, patriots, etc. who embrace this type of programming. Laine was joined at the bottom by Hollie Cavanagh, the 18-year-old balladeer from McKinney, Texas, who opened Wednesday's installment with a pop-infused take on Ike and Tina Turner's “River Deep Mountain High,” and later dialed it down with the Leona Lewis hit “Bleeding Love.” “They both sang their faces off last night,” said “Idol” judge Randy Jackson. The other singers remaining in the competition are booming 20-year-old gospel singer Joshua Ledet, of Westlake, La.; bluesy 21-year-old pawn shop worker Phillip Phillips, of Leesburg, Ga.; and budding 16-year-old pop diva Jessica Sanchez, of San Diego. Bach Choir Festival celebrates 100 years at Packer Memorial Church

Schwab began the legacy of sustainable support in 1912 for the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. “Roots of Renewal” is the theme of this year’s Bach Choir Festival, along with a centennial celebration of the organization’s guarantor (donor support) system, as well as annual concerts held at Packer Memorial Chapel on the Lehigh University campus. The festival has a variety of concerts and events scheduled throughout its duration this weekend and May 11 and 12. “He (Charles Schwab) was a great benefactor to the fledgling Bach Choir of Bethlehem, and knew that in order for it to survive and thrive, that such a system of financial support would be necessary,” says Greg Funfgeld, Bach Choir artistic director and conductor. It was also in 1912 that the Bach Choir performed its first festival inside Packer Memorial Chapel.

Meredith Marakovits involved in coverage of sad night for Yankee fans

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Meredith Marakovits is just about a month into her new job as the Yankees beat reporter for the YES Network and she got a lot of attention late Thursday night when media filed into the Yankees clubhouse for news about star reliever Mariano Rivera. YES always does postgame interviews, but this session drew the attention of the entire Baseball Nation as people waited confirmation on the rumored torn ACL of Rivera, an injury that could have ended the career of one of the greatest Yankees of all time. Marakovits, a Northampton native and Central Catholic graduate, asked manager Joe Girardi the first question where he revealed that it was a torn ACL. She also asked several other good questions, showing great sensitivity to the situation. Short of learning that someone just died, this was the most sober clubhouse you'll ever witness in baseball and it had to be a difficult task for Marakovits to get the information everyone wanted to know while also being careful not to offend anyone with an inappropriate question. She was also there when Rivera met the press and you could again sense the emotion as Rivera fought back tears. He told Marakovits that he had no regrets and that he had been shagging flyballs for years and enjoyed it, and if he had to do it all over again, he would still do the same thing. Rivera stopped short of saying his career was over and he was just trying to come to terms with his injury and long road to recovery. But obviously, that's what everyone wanted to know. Marakovits also asked Rivera about going back to New York and he said he wanted to stay with the team in KC for a few days. Marakovits was excited about the Yankees gig when I talked to her last month, and she knew that she was on the biggest stage of her career. But on Thursday night, she was involved in one of the biggest stories of this -- or any recent -- Yankee season and she gave a great accounting of herself. And look for her to be front and center even more on YES as this story unfolds.

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl The 10th edition of the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl will be played Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11:45 a.m. on ESPN. The game returns to TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas after a two-year hiatus. A team from Conference USA will face a bowl eligible team to be named. BBVA Compass Bowl The seventh annual BBVA Compass Bowl will be played Saturday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. on ESPN. The game is played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., and will pit a team from the BIG EAST Conference against a team from the Southeastern Conference.

This episode order takes the second season total to 24. The back-order of season two will debut later this year. The first 12 episodes of the second season are currently in premieres airing Wednesdays at 10:30pm ET/PT on TV Land thru June 6. Happily Divorced of course stars and is inspired by the real-life story of sitcom favorite Fran Drescher (The Nanny), and revolves around Fran, a Los Angeles florist who finds out after 18-years of marriage that her husband is gay. Unable to sell the house with the economy tanking, she and her gay ex-husband Peter (John Michael Higgins) must continue to live together happily divorced as they both re-enter the dating world. "Happily Divorced" also features acclaimed actors Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris) as her best friend Judi; Rita Moreno (OZ) and Robert Walden (All The President's Men) as Fran's parents Glen and Dori and Valente Rodriguez (George Lopez) as Cesar, her flower shop employee. Parkland takes second at state powerlifting meet

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER The Parkland High School powerlifting team took second in the Pennsylvania State Coaches Powerlifting Association (PSCPA) State High School Championships last weekend at Glen Mills. The two-time defending Lehigh Valley Conference champs were behind only Glen Mills. There were 11 teams from throughout the state participating. Among the top Parkland performances was Zech Rauch, a sophomore, winning the JV (9th-10 grade) 275-pound class and junior Ryan Dupree winning the varsity 242-pound class. Senior Luke Millan was named the meet's Outstanding Lifter after winning the 198-pound class with a 1,500-pound total. "The entire team put in a tremendous amount of work and effort into this and we are incredibly proud of them," said Erik Steiner, who coaches the team along with Paul Hagadus. The sitcom launched on CBS this Fall and only last two weeks on Thursday nights before packing it to Saturdays, where it only lasted one episode there as well. CBS has produced nine episodes, so six episodes are left to air. As we broke yesterday on Twitter, CBS will air those six episodes this summer. Unless it gets pulls due to low ratings, it will air for five weeks from May 26 to June 23 on Saturday nights at 8:30pm. The first week on May 26, the sitcom will air at 8:00pm as well. The series will follow repeats of Rules of Engagement every Saturday night, exceot on May 26 (since there are double Gentleman episodes on that night). Lead actor David Hornsby created the series, adapting the nonfiction book of the same name by John Bridges. The series chronicled two former high school classmates, an uptight columnist (Hornsby) and his more freewheeling, Iraq war veteran, trainer (Kevin Dillon), as they renew a friendship that never really existed before. It was sort of like a new take on The Odd Couple. In other burn-off news, Fox has pulled their planned burn-off of I Hate My Teenage Daughter. The sitcom was set to air Sundays at 7 & 7:30pm on June 6, 13 and 20, but now instead those final six episodes are not scheduled and Fox will air animated encores instead. Will we ever see this show on the schedule again? It is looking less likely since even a summer burn-off was pulled. But stay with us for continued updates on both Gentleman and Daughter.

Parkland grad Laub named football captain at Richmond

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER The University of Richmond football team, under first-year head coach Danny Rocco, has named Parkland grad and redshirt senior John Laub as one of its captains for the 2012 season. Laub, a quarterback who led the Trojans to a 15-1 season and a PIAA 4A runner-up finish in 2007, played in eight games last season. He completed 8 of 17 passes for 116 yards for the Spiders, who struggled through a 3-8 season, including eight straight losses to close the year. In the spring game in mid-April, Laub completed 8 of 19 passes for 58 yards, but was intercepted twice. Laub red-shirted as a freshman in 2008. John's brother, Matt, was a standout defensively at Parkland last season after missing his junior season with an injury. He had 94 tackles (68 solo), 31 quarterback pressures, six pass breakups, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He was a Lehigh Valley Conference first-team selection at linebacker and tight end. Matt Laub is an incoming freshman at Lehigh.

ESPN Taking X Games Global

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ ESPN announced today that beginning in 2013 X Games competitions will expand into Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil; Munich, Germany and Barcelona, Spain, making the event more global in nature. The X Games are currently being competed in Aspen, CO, Los Angeles, and Tignes, France. The three communities were part of a bidding process to expand the games. Each will be working with the X Games organizers on a program for the next three years. “ESPN has been committed to the X Games franchise for nearly two decades and is incredibly excited for the future and this new endeavor,” said John Skipper, president, ESPN and Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks in a press rlease. “We are bringing significant focus to this expansion because we believe in the universal appeal of these sports and competitors and want to share the X Games experience with fans around the world.” Here is the tentative X Games 2013 schedule: Aspen, Colo., USA: January 24-27 Tignes, France: March 20-22 Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil: April 18-21 Barcelona, Spain: May 9-12 Munich, Germany: June 27-30 Los Angeles, Calif., USA: August 1-4

As of yesterday, they quietly added Caroline in the City to the schedule. The sitcom has not been on cable since it aired on Lifetime and Lifetime Real Women on and off from about 2003-06. The Lea Thompson 1995-99 sitcom is airing on TV Guide Network weekdays from 4-5pm and encores 7-8pm. Also joining the TV Guide Network are family dramas Early Edition and The Guardian, with Early Edition airing weekdays at 11am with an encore at 1am and The Guardian weekdays at 12 noon with an encore at 12am. So with these three new additions, will everything else remain on the schedule? No, two series will be removed from the line-up. TV Guide will not be airing Veronica's Closet and Cybill anymore, but everything else remains on the schedule and with some new timings: Designing Women (weekdays from 10-11am and 5-6pm), Ugly Betty (weekdays at 1pm and 2pm), Samantha Who? (weekdays at 3pm), Ned and Stacey (weekdays at 3:30pm), Dharma & Greg (weekdays from 6-7pm), Curb Your Enthusiasm (weekdays at 4am), and Weeds (weekdays at 5am). Bounce TV, the nation's first-ever over-the-air broadcast television network for African-Americans, will launch its first-ever original series Family Time - a half hour situation comedy created by Bentley Kyle Evans (The Jamie Foxx Show, Martin, Love That Girl) and produced by Evans and partner Trenten Gumbs - this summer. Family Time will be seen on Bounce TV Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. with the series premiere set for Monday, June 18, 2012. Family Time centers around the life and times of The Stallworths, a working class African American family who scratches off a lottery ticket and jumps to middle class overnight. They're an authentic picture of an African American family working to live the dream. This family-next-door consists of two loving parents: Anthony (Omar Gooding, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper) and Lisa (Angell Conwell, Dave's World) Stallworth and their children Ebony (Jayla Calhoun) and Devin (Bentley Kyle Evans, Jr.) The Stallworths move to a middle class community in sunny southern California and both Anthony and Lisa bring baggage and other family members into their relationship that makes for great comedy - and occasional drama. Now Bounce TV currently does not air any sitcoms on the schedule, so it will be interesting if they acquire any reruns of older comedies to air alongside this original sitcom. Currently Bounce TV only airs movies, Soul Train and Judge Hatchett daily and Fat Albert on Tuesday nights. We will have much more to come on this show and the potential of sitcoms joining Bounce TV!
