Cruising Phillies shut out Braves

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Atlanta — Raul Ibanez had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, and the Phillies capitalized off another error from Brooks Conrad to beat the Braves, 7-0, and deflate Atlanta's playoff chances.

Conrad, whose poor throw to second led to five unearned runs for Philadelphia in Friday's series opener, was off the mark on another throw to second base before the Phillies scored four runs in the seventh inning. The Braves, who need to win only one game in this series to assure themselves at least a tie in the wild card race, are now all square with the Padres after San Diego beat San Francisco on Saturday.

The Phillies, meanwhile, clinched at least a share of the league's best record for the first time in the 128-year history of the franchise.

"We're going to battle until the end and every game is important," Ibanez said. "The team plays hard no matter what's going on. We've been playing pretty well lately."

Vance Worley got the spot start for Philadelphia in place of a resting Roy Halladay and hurled five shutout frames, allowing just a hit and two walks. Antonio Bastardo (2-0) earned the win for throwing a scoreless sixth.

The Braves, who honored outgoing manager Bobby Cox with a lengthy pregame ceremony that included many former players and coaches, managed only three hits in the critical loss.

Tommy Hanson matched Worley with five scoreless innings in the start, but Jonny Venters (4-4) yielded four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

"We control our own destiny," Venters said. "We just need to come out tomorrow, play hard. I wasn't real good today. I just left some balls over the plate. I was throwing strikes -- I felt good. I was ahead. I was not putting guys away."

The scoreless tie finally ended in the seventh, when the Phillies took advantage of another error by Conrad.

Jimmy Rollins walked off Venters and was replaced by Brian Bocock. Placido Polanco sent a groundball to Conrad, who was again off the mark trying to throw to second, leaving runners at the corners; he had a similar situation in a tie game on Friday, only to make a bad throw to second, leading to five unearned runs for Philadelphia.

Saturday's miscue cost the Braves again, as Chase Utley singled past a drawn- in infield to score Bocock with the game's first run.

Utley stole second, and Ibanez singled with one away to score pinch-runner Wilson Valdez. Shane Victorino followed with another RBI base hit for a 3-0 game, ending Venters' outing on the mound.

Later in the inning, a wild pitch from Craig Kimbrel allowed Ibanez to score, and Ibanez added an RBI single in the eighth for a five-run advantage.

As the Braves' offense continued to struggle against the Philadelphia bullpen, Valdez's RBI double and John Mayberry, Jr.'s bases-loaded walk in the ninth accounted for the final margin.

While Worley no-hit the Braves through three innings, the Phillies had several chances to score.

Philadelphia put runners on first and second with one out in the second, but Hanson struck out Worley and got Rollins to ground out to end the threat. Atlanta broke up the no-hitter in the fourth, but couldn't score, and the visitors put a man on third with one out in the fifth. Utley and Ibanez, however, both grounded out without scoring the runner.

The Braves, meanwhile, couldn't push a runner past second before the Phillies broke the game open in the seventh.

In the case where Atlanta and San Diego both win on Sunday, a three-way tie between the Braves, Padres and Giants would occur. For the first time in major league history, two playoff games would occur, where the Braves would take on the loser of Monday's Padres-Giants matchup on Tuesday at Turner Field…The Phillies clinched the season series, having won 10 of 17 games against the Braves this year…Philadelphia's Polanco had an 85-game errorless streak snapped…The Phillies recorded their ninth consecutive series victory on the road and have won 19 of their last 22 series…Utley has reached base safely in 29 straight games…Victorino had three hits, while Polanco, Utley and Brian Schneider each had two…The Phillies have recorded 21 shutouts this season…Attendance was 54,296, the highest in Braves regular season history since moving to Atlanta.

Lafayette College doesn't get much going in 35-10 loss to Harvard University

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Even though Lafayette College entered today's Harvard game with a 0-3 record, the Leopards could take some positives from of each of those games, all close losses.

Not this one.

The Crimson had its way in every aspect of the game at Fisher Stadium and rolled to a 35-10 win.

The Leopards stand at 0-4 for the first time in coach Frank Tavani's 11 seasons and the first time since 1998. Tavani is now 1-9 against Harvard in his career. It was the Leopards' worst loss since a 52-21 loss to Penn on Sept. 21, 2002.

Harvard used a combination of big plays and an effective running game (311 yards) to dominate with the ball.

The Leopards hurt themselves with 10 penalties for 109 yards and shaky kickoff coverage that helped the Crimson (2-1) gain good field position.

Defensively, Harvard kept Lafayette away from the big deal and kept relentless pressure on quarterback Ryan O'Neil. O'Neil was sacked five times while throwing for 210 yards on 27-for-42 passing.

Lafayette's only touchdown came with 4:58 to play when backup sophomore quarterback Andrew Shoop found freshman Greg Kessel (from East Stroudsburg South) on an 18-yard pass.

Whitehall rallies from 14-0 deficit to dump Easton

FROM THE MORNING CALL

About 10 minutes after the game had ended Friday night and Whitehall had earned a remarkable 17-14 come-from-behind victory over Easton at Cottingham Stadium, the Zephyrs had one more charge to make.

A large group of them stormed down the field — large, orange water bucket in tow— and swarmed around Zephyrs coach Tony Trisciani.

Trisciani got doused, but also got a good idea how Easton quarterback Justin Pacchioli felt during much of the second half.

Whitehall won this Lehigh Valley Conference battle of Lehigh Valley Conference unbeatens with 17 unanswered points, including a startling hook-and-ladder play for a touchdown that had everyone in the stadium asking "Did that really happen?"

But make no mistake, the Zephyrs improved to 5-0 and set up another "battle of the unbeatens" against Central Catholic next Saturday because of its relentless defense.

After Easton scored on two of its first three possessions and seemed unstoppable early, Whitehall held the Rovers to just five first downs and 68 yards of offense in a frenetic second half.

"We're aggressive on defense," Trisciani said. "We're not big, so you've got to play fast and pressure people. That's our scheme, that's what we do. Our linebacker crew can all run really well and get after people. That's Andrew Harris, Tanner Madouse, Glen Klein, Cody Moyer and Eric Fiore. They were bringing it all night long."

They had Pacchioli on the run for much of the game's final 291/2 minutes after Easton took a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard TD run by Zack Rohrbach with 5:39 left in the first half.

To that point, the Rovers had 170 yards of offense and only a fumble at the Whitehall 10 on their second possession seemed to slow them down.

Pacchioli was sacked twice on Easton's next possession and dumped for losses four times after intermission.

"Our turnovers and pass-blocking killed us," said Rovers coach Steve Shiffert. "We've been struggling the last three weeks with the pass-blocking. When we need it, we've had kids up front who are breaking down and getting run over."

Easton's defense didn't exactly get run over, but did get burned by several big plays that tilted the game in the Zephs' favor.

The first was a 42-yard toss from Chris Polony to Tyler Artim that trimmed the Rovers' lead to 14-7 at halftime.

Then after a blunder on a kickoff return pinned Easton at its 2 to start the second half, Polony and Artim struck again for the play of the game. And this time, Eric Fiore was also involved.

Polony hit Artim in the right flat for what looked like a short gain, but with Artim looking like he was down, he scooped the ball to Fiore. It was like a touch pass in basketball and it led to a fastbreak for Fiore who flew down the right sideline for a game-tying score covering 34 yards.

"We've been practicing it all week," Artim said. "The throw was supposed to be a little higher, but I just improvised. I just kind of scooped it to him and Eric made a great move and scored."

Fiore said: "I can't believe we got it off. I thought it was blown up. We tried it on the first play of the game and it got blown up. This time, I can't believe Artim got the ball up."

Neither did Shiffert, who said he wanted to see the play again on film and questioned whether the ball had touched the ground before Artim went into scoop mode.

"I will be curious to watch it on tape," Shiffert said. "But give their kids credit for executing the play and getting it off."

Pacchioli couldn't get off a fourth-down pass on Easton's next possession and Whitehall was on the move again. A 23-yard pass from Polony to Nathan Hoenl set the stage for Joshua Cirocco's 27-yard field goal with 3:58 left in the third period that proved to be the difference.

Later, a 10-yard run by Madouse on a fake punt helped to maintain possession and preserve the lead for Whitehall.

"We just wanted to shoot every bullet we had in the gun tonight," Trisciani said. "Special kids make special plays like Tyler made on that hook-and-ladder.

"This was a real special win for us and it wasn't the perfect game. There was a lot of adversity for us in this game, but our kids overcame the adversity."

And more adversity is on the way next weekend against powerful Central Catholic, the No. 1 ranked 3A team in the state.

"A lot of people weren't expecting this," Fiore said. "No one gives Whitehall a shot, but look at us now. We've got Central next and we'll be ready."

Rollins slams door on Atlanta

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Atlanta — Jimmy Rollins' third career grand slam punctuated a five-run sixth inning, helping the Philadelphia Phillies deal the Atlanta Braves a potentially critical defeat, 11-5, to begin the final series of the regular season at Turner Field.

Rollins, who has been mired with injuries all season, hit just his eighth home run of 2010 for the Phillies, who have locked up the NL East and are in search of the majors' best record for the first time in franchise history. With the victory, Philadelphia moved 1 1 2 games ahead of the Yankees, who were rained out on Friday in Boston.

Kyle Kendrick (11-10) earned the win in his final start of the season, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in five innings.

Derrek Lee drove in all five Atlanta runs, but the Braves missed out on a chance to clinch a share of the NL wild card. Entering the day two games ahead of the Padres, Atlanta's magic number to clinch a postseason berth remains at two after Friday's loss. San Diego plays Friday at San Francisco.

Brandon Beachy (0-2) allowed four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and a walk while fanning five in 5 2/3 frames in defeat. Peter Moylan walked home the go-ahead run, and Mike Dunn allowed Rollins' grand slam.

Burnett key for Yankees

After starting against the Red Sox on Saturday night, A.J. Burnett might not start again until the league championship series — assuming the Yankees advance past the first round.

"I just want the ball, whenever it is," Burnett said about the potential for being skipped in the division series. "I mean, I understand what's going on, I understand how I'm throwing (and) I haven't been helping the team when I'm on the mound."

Outside of naming CC Sabathia as Wednesday's Game 1 starter, the Yankees have not announced a rotation for the division series against Minnesota or Texas. But Friday, The Record's Bob Klapisch reported that Burnett likely would be bypassed in the best-of-five series.

"Do I want it to happen? Heck no," Burnett said of that possibility. "I want the ball."

Friday night's game was rained out in Boston, pushing Andy Pettitte's start to 4 o'clock on Saturday against Tim Wakefield. Burnett follows in the night game, scheduled as a 9 o'clock start, against Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Manager Joe Girardi said Saturday night is "a big start" for Burnett, "and it could be a huge start for us," considering the Yankees' chances of winning the AL East and gaining home-field advantage.

However, Girardi wasn't looking at Burnett on Saturday as if he were pitching for a place on the postseason roster. "No, my biggest concern is that he pitches well," Girardi said.

That's the same approach Burnett is taking.

"I don't want to look at it as a bigger start. But it's a very important start for myself," Burnett said, mentioning the need to give his teammates reason to share his own confidence.

"I'm sure people are curious," Burnett said, cracking a smile.

Speaking frankly, and in a genial mood, Burnett termed his regular season as "rubbish," but believes there's time left for a turnaround.

"I mean, I broke every record in the wrong direction for the Yankees this season," said Burnett, whose 5.33 ERA is the highest by any pitcher in Yankees' history with at least 180 innings. "Then again, I can go and throw a no-hitter out there any time. So, I have that in the back of my head too.

"(My) confidence is not lost, but I know there's questions. I'm not oblivious."

Burnett's latest flop was Monday night at Toronto, charged with seven runs on seven hits two of them homers in just 2$ innings. That left Burnett with a 1-7 record and a 6.98 ERA in his last 11 starts.

"I ain't erasing that," Burnett said. "But I can make it better, I know that. I know I can help this year, so I haven't lost that."

In Burnett's view, he doesn't feel he's pitching tonight for his place in the division series. "But then again, I've given them a lot of reason to think so," he said, adding that he's more concerned about boosting opinion within the confines of the clubhouse.

"Once you make the playoffs, you kind of start over."

But can Burnett find a clear path to channel the good command of his fastball and signature curveball? He hasn't been able to duplicate the rhythm he exhibited during the season's first two months, when he went 6-2, with a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts.

"That seems like four years ago," Burnett said.

Overall, Burnett feels his regular season belongs in the trash can. "It's true man," Burnett said of his "rubbish" quote. "I'm here for a reason and I haven't done (anything) to help this team this year. That's my own opinion, that's how I feel, but I don't sit and dwell on it."

At times, Burnett does wonder "where we'd be if I had pulled my weight," as the Yanks entered the weekend fighting an uphill battle to claim the AL East.

"But I look around and I tip my hat to Phil Hughes, CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte. (Hughes) picked me up big time," said Burnett, who'd rather throw seven innings and feel good about Saturday's start than anything else.

"There's no erasing (the regular season) now," Burnett said. "But I know I can make it disappear for a few weeks maybe."

Vikings nearly blow 18-point lead, escape when Nazareth field-goal try hits upright.

FROM THE MORNING CALL

While watching film of Nazareth this week, Central Catholic coach Harold Fairclough was struck by the leg strength Blue Eagles kicker Braden Drexler showed.

Fairclough and his players spent Friday night watching with dread when Drexler lined up for a 40-yard field-goal attempt that had the chance to erase the 18-point lead the Vikings had opened early in the fourth quarter.

Drexler drilled the ball high and far, giving it plenty of distance to clear the crossbar. It never did, clanging off the right upright with less than a minute to go.

When the ball fell to the turf, Central Catholic exhaled. The Vikings took two knees to close out a 39-36 Lehigh Valley Conference football shootout at Nazareth's Andrew S. Leh Stadium.

The win kept Central Catholic (5-0 overall, 4-0 LVC) perfect headed into next week's showdown with unbeaten Whitehall, a 17-14 winner over Easton. The winner of that game will take sole possession of first place in the LVC with four games to play.

The Vikings left Nazareth (3-2, 2-2) feeling more fortunate than good after nearly squandering a 19-point lead in the second quarter and an 18-point lead in the fourth. The Blue Eagles piled up 455 yards of offense against Central Catholic, led by a brilliant game from junior quarterback Daniel Harding (26-for-45, 421 yards, five touchdowns, one interception).

Harding led two touchdown drives in the final 8:29 and got the Blue Eagles into field-goal range after they recovered an onside kick with under a minute and a half to play. Nazareth's night still ended in dejection when Drexler's kick just missed.

"I saw [Drexler] kick two bombs against Easton," Fairclough said. "He just hit the upright. Sometimes you need luck to win."

The Vikings played well in building their lead, running off 26 straight points in the first half. Quarterback Brendan Nosovitch threw for 214 yards and two TDs in the opening half and ran for another 76 yards.

Nosovitch finished with a single-game school record 311 passing yards and also ran for 152 yards and a touchdown. His third and final touchdown pass of the game, a 33-yard heave early in the fourth quarter on which Jalen Snyder-Scipio outjumped a Nazareth defender, gave Central Catholic a 39-21 lead and helped him shake off two second-half interceptions.

Central Catholic still seemed in control when it turned the ball over to Nazareth while holding a 39-29 edge with 3:06 to play. The Vikings had shut down LVC rushing leader Chuck Dibilio (16 carries, 44 yards), but the Blue Eagles used their passing game to make Central sweat.

A 62-yard touchdown pass from Harding to Sean Sauerzopf (seven catches, 120 yards) with 1:29 to play and Drexler's extra point got Nazareth within three. The Blue Eagles then recovered the onside kick and drove from Central's 47-yard line to the 23 before throwing three straight incompletions, leaving Drexler a chance to tie it.

"I told our kids to come out and win the second half, and I think we did that," Nazareth coach Rob Melosky said. "But you turn the ball over [four times] the way we did, you won't beat a No. 1 ranked team in the state."

PSSA SCORES

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

Didn’t notice too much out there about the release of PSSA scores, but do want to thank the reader that forwarded to me some numbers tracking progression of a class over time.

Today’s 6th grade class, that was scored in 5th last year had some significant concerns in reading. Only 13.3% were advanced in reading compared to 40.5% when they were tested in 4th grade, and 20.5% were indicated as below basic in reading compared to only 6% when they were in 4th grade.

Overall, our tested students struggle more in reading than math up until 11th grade when the trend reverses, with a greater percent below basic in reading than in math.

Traditionally, as students get older, scores go down. This again holds true with the current 12th graders. What is alarming is nearly 18% were below basic in math.

The current 11th graders have held pretty steady year to year in math and have improved significantly in reading. The 10th graders numbers are similar to 11th.

The current 9th graders had the highest scores with 75% advanced in math and 65% advanced in reading compared to 3% and 5% below basic. This group has also ranged the most with reading scores in advanced fluctuating between 24% and 65% and math between 52% and 75%

The current 8th graders have pretty high scores as well with 74% advanced in math and 55% in reading.

7th grade has increased in those below proficient in reading each year while advanced has ping-ponged 26-49-27-40%, and in math those below basic have been over 10% each of the past two times the tests have been administered.

Week 5 high school football picks: Out of the hot tub and back into the frying pan

FROM KEITH GROLLER

I have covered high school football for this newspaper in five different decades now. Geez, that makes me feel old.

If you've been following along, you know by now that the first story I ever did for this paper was Sheila O'Donnell winning the District 11 girls tennis title in September of 1979. We had a big 30th anniversary story last September that was turned into an advertising campaign. Thankfully, Sheila's picture was used in that campaign rather than mine.

Anyway, Sheila is still very much on the scene and following her nephew Brendan Nosovitch as he quarterbacks the unbeaten Central Catholic Vikings.

But my first high school football game came a few weeks later. It was Allen at P'burg. Dick Sniscak (Rich's father) coached against Bob Stem. Don't remember the score, but remember that P'burg won and I hightailed it back across the bridge and back to the office without ever getting any quotes. I was just an 18-year-old kid myself back in the fall of 1979, a few months out of high school and nervous as hell.

At that point of my career, P'burg seemed as far away as the Meadowlands.

Suffice to say, I've done a lot of games since then, and while the deadline rush never allows you to rest, I enjoy the whole scene of Friday night football.

Last Friday night, I was away from the typical Friday night scene, and the Lehigh Valley. I was in a New Hamsphire hotel and rewarded myself for making the 7-hour, five-state drive by relaxing in a hot tub. I was in there around 11 o'clock just about the time I'd be flailing away on a story.

I kind of enjoyed that feeling, too, with a very different kind of sweat pouring down my face.

Tonight, however, I am back at work and Steve Miller, our LVC beat man, gave me a good one -- Whitehall at Easton. A battle of unbeatens. He's doing CCHS at Nazareth, another good one. But there's always something special about a game at Cottingham Stadium.

Here's hoping this weekend's picks are special. I was 17-7 last week, making me 78-27 on the season (74.3 percent).

Here we go:

LEHIGH VALLEY CONFERENCE

CCHS 42, Nazareth 28 -- My man, the Weave, is going with his Blue Eagles, 32-21. I just don't think the Blue Eagles defense is good enough to slow down the Vikings. But it's an entertaining game to be sure, and if you see the Weave taking tickets, tell him I said hello.

Emmaus 20, Becahi 7 -- Once upon a time, Becahi coming to the borough was bad news for the home team. No wonder frequent Groller's Corner contributor "CHEK" can't stand Bob Stem. He used to swat the Green Hornets the way CHEK'S Nittany Lions beat up the Youngstown States on their nonleague schedule. But Stem is in Jersey and Emmaus football is now a source of pride in the community.

Freedom 42, Dieruff 0 -- At least the Huskies scored last week.

Liberty 21, Parkland 14 -- Talk about things changing. For many years this was THE game of the Lehigh Valley Conference season. Tonight, it ranks as only the third best game on the league card.

Northampton 28, Allen 20 -- The Canaries have scored 20 points or more in back-to-back games for the first time since the last two games of the 2005 season. I know it's not much, but when you're dealing with Allentown football you have to take the positives where you can find them.

Easton 21, Whitehall 14 -- Could this be a District 11 4A championship game preview? Wouldn't doubt it. Both teams have shown the ability to win close ones. I just can't go against the Rovers at Cottingham and wonder if a wet, sloppy field could neutralize any edge the Zephs may have with their speedy skill-position players.

COLONIAL LEAGUE

Bangor 33, Wilson 21 -- Scott LaValva is a question mark for the Slaters, but the Warriors may be even more banged up.

Catasauqua 20, Saucon Valley 14 -- The Panthers have to rank as the league's biggest disappointment so far.

Palmerton 34, Palisades 14 -- Thanks to their struggles in boys basketball, this has become my favorite Colonial League rivalry. The distance between these two schools is so vast that I always think they should allow the kids in the traveling party to stay overnight in a hotel. Hopefully they at least give them a nice bus for the three-county trip.

Northwestern 41, Notre Dame 13 -- Can't we arrange a game between Dieruff and the Crusaders?

Northern Lehigh 56, Salisbury 0 -- Wonder how my friend Chuck Sonon, who was on the Falcons' coaching staff last year, is enjoying his time away from the game.

Pen Argyl 21, Southern Lehigh 13 -- Lots of people were amazed with the 42 points the Green Knights scored against Wilson. I was more impressed with them holding the Warriors to just six points.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY CONFERENCE

East Stroudsburg South 27, Stroudsburg 14 -- If you miss this one at the Purple Pit, don't worry, they'll do it again in eight weeks at Stroudsburg.

Pocono Mountain East 34, Lehighton 14 -- Still think fondly of my trip to Lehighton three years ago to cover this matchup. The Cardinals won that one with an offensive showcase and their offense will carry them to a win in this one.

E.S. North 26, Pocono Mountain West 18 -- I have still yet to visit either of these two schools. Maybe this winter I'll get up to West to see Brad Pensyl's star-studded basketball team.

OTHERS

Pleasant Valley 42, Tamaqua 20 -- I may have jinxed Jim Thorpe and Lehighton with my Friday features the past two weeks, but I think the jinx stops here. Jimmy Terwilliger sounds like he means business with the Bears.

Jim Thorpe 19, Shenandoah Valley 14 -- Bet the colors of those mountains around Jim Thorpe are starting to sparkle.

North Schuykill 73, Marian 0 -- If previously scuffling Pius X hit the Colts for 62 points, you can imagine what the Spartans potent offense is going to do.

Schuylkill Haven 35, Panther Valley 7 -- Losing "only" 42-20 to North Schuylkill may have felt like a win for Haven last week.

Hatboro-Horsham 27, Quakertown 21 -- Wonder how the traffic is on Route 309 between these two schools on a typical Friday night. Not enjoyable, that's my guess.

Souderton 33, Pennridge 27 -- Bet Souderton coach Ed Gallagher gets the Central Catholic score from his father Hughie every Friday night.

Phillipsburg 35, Ridge 20 -- This is a rematch of last year's state title game, and you know the deal here, I never pick against Bob Stem.

Pius X 28, Bucktail 14 -- Royals on a roll?

Spring Ford 28, Upper Perk 13 -- I've actually been to Spring-Ford. Nice place. Even better nickname -- Rams. Hey, how about them Rams?! The ones in St. Louis, I mean. Softened up the Redskins for those Eagles. While most of the world will be glued to the Dono-Vick battle this Sunday afternoon, I'm be more interested in Rams-Seahawks.

That's it. Let's hope the rain stops and stars shine on the field.
