Mount Lebanon Queens of the PIAA Girls Court Again and Again and Again While Archbishop Wood, Villa Maria & Steel-Highspire Also Win Titles

For a third straight year, the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils are sitting on top in Pennsylvania in Class AAAA. It wasn't pretty, but he Blue Devils were golden again by hanging on to a one point victory. District 10's Villa Maria Academy in Class AA also pulled off the trifecta by winning a third straight state title with a rout Friday afternoon. However on Saturday, District 10 Mercyhurst Prep in AAA and District 6 Bishop Guilfoyle in A lost in the finals and had to settle for silver. With baseball season now just a few days away -- although there's rain and snow in Friday's forecast when the Phillies are supposed to open their potential world championship season -- it truly is time to think about warm days and nights and baseball.

Coaching icon Bob Hurley on "60 Minutes" should be worth a watch

The previous post on Groller's Corner was about Ron Hassler and when I think about Hassler I also think about St. Anthony's coaching legend Bob Hurley, Sr.
That's because while some people around here have knocked Hassler's style over the years, I will always remember the compliment Hurley gave Hassler about eight or nine years ago when I went down to Jersey City for a St. Anthony's-Central Catholic game while Hassler was coaching the Vikings.
Hurley didn't allow you on his schedule unless he respected you and he respected Hassler.
He said the sets, screens and halfcourt scheme that Hassler had offensively was as complex and challenging as any his team would see all year and was a great challenge for his St. Anthony's kids to defense. He really considered going against Hassler's CCHS team a valuable learning experience for his kids.
St. Anthony's won the game that night and has won more than any other high school team in the nation and Hurley is considered the John Wooden of high school basketball.
He won't come back to the Lehigh Valley because he had a bad experience with some fans during one of the first Hoop Group events.
But no matter what you think of him as a person, you have to think the world of him as a coach and teacher of the game of basketball.
I mention all of this because Hurley, as you may have seen during NCAA tournament commercials, will be featured in a segment on Sunday night's "60 Minutes program on CBS. It should be an interesting, enlightening look at one of the great minds in basketball.

The St. Anthony Friars are undefeated this year and were named the number-one high school basketball team in the nation - and they don't even have their own gym. The tiny Catholic school in Jersey City, N.J., does have Coach Bob Hurley though, whose 24 state championships and 1,000-plus wins speak to his elite, rigorous program that he says just "isn't meant for everybody."
Steve Kroft talks to the legendary high school coach who many call America's best for a "60 Minutes" story to be broadcast this Sunday, March 27 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
More than 150 of his players have gone through his strict program to win scholarships to Division One colleges, making it past 10:00 p.m. curfews and periodic drug testing, not to mention his drill-sergeant style of coaching. Some have rebelled against his old-school style. "Oh, yeah," acknowledges Hurley, "That's why I think there are hinges on doors...this is not meant for everybody," he tells Kroft. "And every time somebody goes out the door...because they didn't have it, the rest of them feel a little bit better about themselves and I think the group gets a little tighter."
Hurley makes it clear to his players what is expected of them by having them sign a contract, the breeching of which leads to discipline, suspension or worse. There are 19 rules. "[No] alcohol, cigarettes, narcotics...Some of them are...short haircuts, no tattoos...jewelry has to be basic," says Hurley. "I've had people in communities say to me they think a kid may be 'hard partying'...so because of the contract, I'll take an entire team to a drug treatment program [and] we'll test them."
In 39 years of coaching the Friars varsity, only two of his players did not go on to college, and that was because they chose not to.

LES MISERABLES Student Edition is the theatrical production based on the novel
by Victor Hugo. This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in
19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf a bread, petty thief Jean
Valjean (Zach Kessler) is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes
an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive
father.
In the process, he violates his parole. The relentless Inspector Javert
(Parker Ryan), who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently
pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody
student uprising and saves the life a young man, Marius (Ryan Skerchak)
hopelessly in love with his adopted daughter, Cosette (Vanessa Ruggiero), does
the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.
Performed entirely by students, the musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel
Schönberg has been specially adapted and licensed by Music Theatre

Nazareth Rotary Club Hosts Art Auction
Over 150 pieces of framed fine art will be offered at an Art Auction sponsored
by the Nazareth Rotary Club on Saturday, April 2 at the Holy Family Club,
located at 515 W. Mauch Chunk St. in Nazareth. Pieces available include prints,
original oils, and sports memorabilia, in a variety of sizes and a wide range of
prices. Exhibition of the art and music by pianist Dave Marchetti begins at 6:30
p.m. and the auction begins at 7:30. Tickets (which include light refreshments,
cash bar, and door prize entry) are $25 per couple or $15 per person, and are
available at the door or in advance from any member of the Nazareth Rotary
Club. No purchase of art is necessary to attend. Proceeds from the event will
help support worthwhile local and international organizations. Call (484)

Vera Nederostek and her sister are hosting a benefit/fundraiser on behalf of the
victims of the Allentown Gas Explosion that happened on Wed. 2/9/11. Which now
is referred to as "the 2nd 911" ! This was a huge disaster and it has
personally effected me since one of the families that lost everything is my
sister and brother in-law, Bill & Dottie Yanett. There are 5 families all
together who lost their entire homes and ALL their worldy poss...essions, Bill
& Dottie, Karen & Ed..., Antonio and Jill Arroyo, Don O'Shall and Manuel Cruz.
This event is for THEM !! These people are not just Dottie's neighbors, but
her family and friends!! We are organizing this benefit and reaching out for
all the help we can get. We are going to have a fund raiser/benefit for the
public on April 9th, at the Schnecksville Fire Company in Schnecksville, Pa.
from 7pm- 11pm. 100% of the proceeds will be divided evenly between these 5
families. An account for them has been set up at People's First Credit
Union,
"Rebuilding Our New Lives-13th Street Homeless Victims Fund". Post Office Box

for deposit into the account for them. Schnecksville Fire Company has

Imohtep Charter won their second PIAA Class AA basketball champions and there was no double overtime this time as the Panthers smoked the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 67-34 on Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center. 10 different players scored for the Panthers as they exploded in the second half to claim the gold. Imohtep won the 2009 championship in one of the greatest games in championship history with a 75-69 win over North Catholic. Khyree Wooten led the way for the Panthers with 12 points, who finish 31-3 and winners of 22 straight.
It was a good start for GCC as Jake Swan and Ben Klimchock drilled long range jumpers to put the Centurions up 6-2 at the four minute mark, that seemed to wake up Imotep Charter, as they exploded for an 11-0 run and a 13-6 lead. Jesse Reed ended the dry spell with a three pointer but GCC trailed by five at the break, despite shooting 6 of 11 from the field.
But as was the case last night with Montour, the WPIAL representative went dry at the well, going 5:59 without a field goal as Imhotep outscored GCC 14-2 over that period. The Panthers controlled the glass in the first half with a 24-8 advantage. 6-8 senior Erik Copes had almost as many rebounds with 7 as the entire GCC team. The third quarter was the same as the second for GCC, cold from the field and Imhotep pulled away with a 9-0 run over the final 2:21, highlighted by dunks from Earl Brown and Wooten. Head coach Andre Noble said they thought they could pressure GCC and wear them down, since they go only six deep. He said the Public League schedule plus playing teams from New York, California, Georgia, Louisiana and California, prepared his team well for a state title run.
GCC after the great start, finished 5 of 32 over the final three quarters from the field, shooting 11-43 for the game, including 4 of 19 from behind the arc. Jesse Reed ended his career with 13 points and six rebounds, P.J. McLaughlin added 10 points for the Centurions, who finish at 27-4 and silver medals in both the WPIAL and PIAA championships. Head coach Greg Bisignani said there’s a reason why the Panthers are mentioned among the 20 best teams in the nation. He added that GCC tried to spread the floor and spot up for the outside shot, but that they were so long and athletic, that made it impossible. Bisignani said it was a wonderful season and a great experience playing in the state title game.
Brown scored 10 points, along with Brandon Austin. Cope finished with five points and 13 rebounds, David Appolon grabbed 10 rebounds as Imhotep finished with a 49-22 advantage on the boards, cleaning almost as many offensive rebounds 20 as the entire GCC game total. The Panthers shot 26 of 62 from the field and 3-8 from behind the arc.

Hassler to Becahi rumors weren't true

"Did you hear? Hassler's got the Becahi job locked up."
"Yeah, and his son is going there and [assistant] Jerry Radocha's son, too."
This is the kind of stuff that has been rolling through the local basketball grapevine the past few weeks.
I'd like to have a $20 bill for every time I heard someone say local coaching icon Ron Hassler was going to be Becahi's next coach.
I might not have enough to retire, but I could probably swing a quick trip to Vegas off that cash.
Turns out, there's nothing to the rumor. Hassler's not going to Becahi. Neither is his son.Hassler
He said so tonight when I talked to him about his resignation Thursday at North Penn, which I truly believe was prompted by fatigue from the commute to Lansdale every day during the season and his desire to watch his kids compete in sports.
I also believe Hassler would like to coach again one day, and he will. Even though he's won 534 games and has been coaching for 27 seasons, he's only 54 and probably has another lengthy coaching stint in him. When he's ready to returnany sagging program would be foolish not to hire him. If there's one thing Hassler teams do, it's win.
You might have some kids and parents complaining about the style, but if you want to learn the game's fundamentals and win, you go with Hassler.
And next time he coaches it will be much closer to Schnecksville home.
Hassler wanted the challenge of coaching in the rugged District One and did a typically good job, improving North Penn's won-loss record each season -- 11-12 in 2008-09 to 13-10 in 2009-10 to 21-6 in the season just ended.
"Jerry and I both like to learn and we picked up some new things down there," Hassler said. "They played the game a little differently, they ref it a little different and this experience gave us a different view on things. In some areas, the competition was really at a high level. Down there you have so many good teams."
But it was all not good.
Hassler was troubled by the fluidity of the rosters with some high-powered programs.
"The rosters of some of those rosters really changed each year with new kids who weren't part of the program the previous year," Hassler said. "I am not sure I like the direction high school basketball is going and I got a bigger taste of it down there than we have up here. The teams trying to maintain a high level of play are using quite a bit of transfer students.
"I still believe the kids should come through own community programs and work your way up through the ranks and hopefully get a shot to play when you're a senior. But that's happening less and less. Some of the coaches and many of the parents are involved in shopping kids around all over the place. We've heard about Nike treating kids like a meat market. Well, that mentality has trickled down to the high school level and you are not seeing kids have loyalty to a program and working within that program all the way through."
Hassler's comments are what I've been saying all along -- especially now that the Pacchioli transfer went through. Free-agency has come to high school athletics
The PIAA can't stop the movement. Might as well take the transfer rule off the books, and you could start to see kids change schools from week to week and the kids who worked hard and waited their turn for a shot will simply get shoved aside in the name of winning.
Coach yell at you a little loud? Hey, just threaten that you're going to leave for the rival school and he'll pipe down.
It's despicable in my opinion, but it's clear where the power lies now and it's not with the schools and coaches, that's for sure. Loyalty to your community, your town, your district? Forget about it.
Not good enough to play? Not getting it done academically at one school? No problem. Just find a new, softer home. Just change uniforms like T-shirts in the summertime.
But I digress.
Hassler was very appreciative of the support he got at North Penn.
He went through hell last year when some absurd accusations were made, but said he got strong backing from the administration and had some terrific parents down there.
"We made some tremendous inroads down there and I hope they will continue the things we got established down there," he said.
He said this was a tough decision to make, but as someone who hated that drive to Council Rock South last week for the Allen-La Salle game, I can certainly understanding why spending your winter winding your way through the backroads of Bucks County can get to you after awhile.
Routes 22 and 33 and 309 are a piece of cake compared to some of those trips.
"If I was still 32 I'd probably stay down there for awhile," he said. "But at this phase of my life I really don't have the same level of energy to do all of that driving and give the same effort to a program. I know only one way to coach and I just couldn't continue to give all I could to the program the way I'm accustomed to. The time commitment was too much.
"I really am looking forward to going to watching my kids' play. I know they said it didn't bother them when I wasn't there, but it really bothered me."

Pacchioli cleared to play baseball for Nazareth

Morning Call baseball player of the year Justin Pacchioli has been approved by the PIAA Board of Control to play baseball for Nazareth this spring.
The Board of Control voted 14-12 to approve Pacchioli, a star catcher who had appealed the decision made by the District 11 committee last week.
The District 11 committee voted 8-6 to not allow Pacchioli to play at Nazareth, believing there was enough evidence that his transfer from Easton to Nazareth was for -- at least in part -- athletic reasons.
But as the PIAA did in the case of standout wrestler Mike Fleck earlier in the school year, it overturned the decision of the District 11 committee. No District 11 committee members are allowed to vote on the Board of Control when one of the district's athletes are involved.
Why does the PIAA overturn these decisions? Many have suggested it has to do with fear of lawsuits.
As one member of the District 11 committee told me in confirming that Pacchioli had been cleared to play: "Now you know why more kids are not stopped from playing even when it's obvious they are transferring for athletic reasons. The PIAA will overturn us anyway."
Pacchioli has not said why he left Easton after three-and-a-half years.
In addition to his stellar baseball career, he was the face of Red Rover football, leading the program to back-to-back District 11 4A championships.
Pacchioli is also a Lehigh University baseball recruit.
Nazareth's scheduled opener against Pocono Mountain East was postponed today due to weather-related issues.

Da Vinci Science Center names Scott Babashak, Liz Keptner as official spokesparents

Da Vinci Science Center has tapped a pair of Bethlehem parents who are familiar to many Lehigh Valley families to help teach about the fun, educational, close-to-home experiences it offers.
Former CBS3 Eyewitness News anchor and WFMZ-TV 69News anchor and reporter Liz Keptner and her husband of eight years, former 69News reporter Scott Babashak, have been named the Da Vinci Science spokesmom and spokesdad.
Keptner and Babashak have a 6-year-old daughter, Sophie, who will appear with them in a series of short videos highlighting Da Vinci experiences from a parent's perspective, a news release says. The videos will appear on the center's new website, set to launch next month, and the couple will be invited to attend events.
They're members of the Allentown attraction. Sophie has participated in summer camps and celebrated her birthday with a party there last fall, the news release says.
“We love coming to the Da Vinci Science Center because it presents affordable and accessible experiences that are enjoyable for Sophie, Scott and me and will help our daughter build a successful life as an adult,” Keptner says in the news release. “We are honored that the Center asked us to serve as its spokesparents, and we look forward to helping raise awareness about it.”
The facility has 10,000 square feet of exhibits and more than 30 programs, focusing on science and mathematics.
Keptner and Babashak left WFMZ-TV to work as reporters for a Fox news station in Sacramento, Calif., in 2004. They returned to Pennsylvania in 2005, when Keptner joined CBS3, where she worked for five years. She left the station in May 2010 and is now executive producer at Valley Social TV.
Babashak is a certified financial planner for GF Pension in Bethlehem.

Justin Pacchioli will be playing baseball for Nazareth Area High School this spring.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Directors, by a 14-12 vote today, granted Pacchioli eligibility to play for the Blue Eagles. The vote reversed a District 11 decision that ruled Pacchioli ineligible.
Pacchioli, a star football and baseball player at Easton Area High School, transferred to Nazareth in January.
District 11, by an 8-6 vote on March 21, denied Pacchioli's eligibility to play for the Blue Eagles. Nazareth, on the behalf of Pacchioli, appealed the decision to the PIAA.
Pacchioli, who has been practicing with the Blue Eagles, can play immediately.
Nazareth's game at Pocono Mountain East today was postponed. The Blue Eagles' next game is home Monday against East Stroudsburg South.
Easton Principal Michael Koch and Athletic Director Jim Pokrivsak testified at today's hearing, as did Pacchioli's attorney, Steven Hoffman. Nazareth Area School District was not represented at the hearing.
The PIAA deliberated for about 45 minutes.
"The Pacchiolis are ecstatic," Hoffman said. "They're happy the PIAA didn't consider the transfer was made for athletic reasons. Justin is looking forward to playing baseball this year."
