The Express-Times reports that Nazareth Hardware will be closing on December 31.

The store moved in July to a smaller location on Main Street about one block away, but even that effort wasn’t enough to save the store.

After months of talking about it, officials at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem decided they didn't want to wait even one extra minute to open the casino's new section of gambling floor.

So at the stroke of midnight tonight, they'll throw down the barriers and fling open a casino expansion that includes 250 new slot machines, two new restaurants and the Infusion lounge.

Sunday marks the casino's six-month anniversary, when Sands can legally expand gambling.

''We're ready to go,'' said Sands President Robert DeSalvio. ''Why would we wait even one minute?''

To be sure, Sands once had much higher hopes. When the casino opened May 22, DeSalvio said he planned to add 2,000 slot machines in the new section, which has been behind a curtain at the rear of the main gaming floor.

But the global recession intervened and revenues from the existing 3,000 machines fell below projections, so Sands elected to add 250 machines.

The daily take of $219 per machine Sands had last month is well below the $300 Wall Street gaming analyst Robert LaFleur of Susquehanna Financial Group predicted before the casino opened. It's even below the $255 Sands projected it could do with 5,000 machines.

Still, DeSalvio said the new section will help the casino grow, even if it's not happening as fast as he had hoped.

What visitors will see in the expansion area is a wide open gaming floor -- with room to add table games later -- that includes the new machines, plus about 400 machines moved from other parts of the casino.

In addition, they'll find a third lounge. Infusion is to be a more intimate, quieter bar specializing in ''infused'' fruit and alcohol drinks with names like High Voltage, Monkey Wrench, Nuclear Reaction and Sledge Hammer.

Perhaps the two biggest draws for the new portion will be the restaurants. Emeril Lagasse will open his Burgers and More eatery, his first-ever burger joint, featuring gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries, onion rings, salads, shakes and malts. You can even build your own burger, if you're willing to part with $14.50.

A few paces away, Manhattan deli owner Sandy Levine will open a third location for his Carnegie Deli, which is known for its massive pastrami, corned beef and brisket sandwiches, named after stars like Woody Allen and stuffed with at least a pound of meat.

''If you can put your mouth around one of our sandwiches, then we made a mistake,'' Levine said Friday as he prepared for the opening. ''We don't give you a knife and fork for nothing.''

The 150-seat deli, like the one in Manhattan, is decorated with a collection of autographed photos. But this deli has a distinctly Pennsylvania theme that includes Dan Marino, Sylvester Stallone, Joe Frazier, Mike Ditka and George Lucas.

If fact, Sands decided it couldn't even wait until midnight to open the restaurants. Because the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board only forbids gambling expansion for six months, both restaurants will open today at 6 p.m.

Sands tonight will remove the barriers to reveal the nearly 40,000-square-foot section of floor that's been hidden behind a red curtain since opening.

A ceremonial grand opening -- to include an appearance by Lagasse and Levine -- is scheduled for Dec. 1.

In the meantime, Sands will continue planning how it will again shuffle its gaming floor to fit 80 to 100 table games, such as poker, roulette and craps, once Pennsylvania legislators approve them.

Though that's expected to happen soon, it remains unclear how soon table games will show up in casinos.

But DeSalvio is certain of one thing.

''Once they're legal,'' he said, ''we'll have them the minute we're allowed.''

Easton and Phillipsburg advance in football postseason

Hughes and Gaddy both found the end zone for the Rovers who will face third seeded Parkland, a 59-30 winner over East Stroudsburg South, next Saturday in the sub-regional final.

Before Easton can turn their attention to the Trojans they must first prepare for rival Phillipsburg on Thanksgiving Day. The Rovers will play two games in a three day stretch next week.

“It’s a tough week but we’re ready,” said Hughes, a senior captain. “We take them one at a time and right now the focus is on Phillipsburg. That’s our biggest game of the year.”

The Stateliners, a 35-7 winner over Westfield in the North 2 Group 4 semifinals, will get a respite from the NJSIAA playoffs before facing Ridge the first weekend in December.

Dana Lee rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns at Maloney Stadium against the Blue Devils defense.

“Dana ran well, and the whole team blocked well,” head coach Bob Stem said. “They came off the ball. Any time you get 300 yards rushing you know you’re doing a lot of things right.”

Only a 40-yard touchdown run by Kevin Motolla kept the County Seaters from being shut out.

"We’ve always said the line of scrimmage, no matter the level, will dictate the game," said head coach George DiGrande. “Early on they were controlling the line of scrimmage on us.”

Things also did not go as expected for Wilson, as they lost their first game of the season in the District 11 Class AAA final to a physical Central Catholic squad.

Brendan Nosovitch, the Vikings quarterback, ran for two touchdowns and threw for four more to storm coach Bret Comp's Warrior defense 49-21.

“Brendan’s been coming along, getting better and better,” Central Catholic coach Harold Fairclough said. “His confidence level is getting higher and higher as the wins pile up. We knew he would be calm and under control.”

While not a district title, Bethlehem Catholic coach Mike Palos ended his inaugural season with an Eastern Conference Div. III championship by defeating Northwestern 13-0 in the final game for legendary Tigers coach Bob Mitchell.

The Golden Hawks were able to bookend a defensive contest with touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters.

“It was an honor to be on the same field with him (Mitchell) tonight,” Palos said. “I just hope one day I could be in his shoes and be the coach that he was.”

MAYOR NUTTER PAYS OFF BET

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter made good on his World Series bet with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Nutter joined Bloomberg Friday for some community service in the Bronx, but he had to wear a Yankees jersey while doing it.

Bloomberg and Nutter made a wager that said the loser had to come to the winner's city to do a community service project, while wearing the jersey of the winning team.

So they helped paint walls in a hallway at a junior high school in the Bronx. Nutter wore no. 55 -- honoring World Series Most Valuable Player Hideki Matsui.

Bloomberg wore no. 27, which marks the Yankees' 27th World Series win.

Nutter said he will still help to paint a mural with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

SENATE SEAT

Rudy Giuliani may be seeking a new title, and it's not governor.

For Giuliani, the decision to forgo the governor's race and run against Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 was a no-brainer.

Sources tell CBS station WCBS-TV that Giuliani is more interested in national issues. He's been one of the most outspoken Republicans railing against the decision to try Khalid Sheik Mohammad and four other accused terrorists in New York City.

Giuliani's connection to the 9/11 attacks in the minds of New York voters may bolster his chances. A new Marist poll shows ditching the governor's race may be the right move.

Among the 800 New Yorkers surveyed, Giuliani easily defeats Gillibrand 54 to 40 percent. He also tops incumbent Democratic Governor David Paterson 60 to 35 percent. But in a head to head matchup against State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, one of the most popular politicians in the state, the poll shows Giuliani would lose the governor's race by a relatively wide margin, 53 to 43 percent.

Meanwhile, Giuliani said on Thursday that trying self-professed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a federal civilian court in New York is unwise and unnecessary.

"There's no reason to put New York through this," said Giuliani, who was mayor when terrorists flew two hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and one struck the Pentagon. A fourth jet crashed in western Pennsylvania.

"If President Barack Obama had concluded that military tribunals were impermissible," Giuliani said, "I would have been in favor of it." He called the decision to use the federal court system "unprecedented" and said that in the Civil War and in both World War I and World War II, the United States relied on military courts.

Sources say he wants to fill the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term, and then possibly make another run for president in 2012.

Friends of the former mayor say they think he'd be a major player in the senate from day one, giving senior Senator Charles Schumer a run for his money.

Among Giuliani's perceived strengths is his unofficial role as the GOP's attack dog, because they loved his ability to speak forcibly and intelligently on Republican positions.

Republicans believe Giuliani has been an important voice against national health care reform, and would continue to be.
