Recently, I caught up with the most recent season of FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Always Sunny is currently the longest-running live action sitcom on TV, having just finished its 13th season. The show premiered in 2005, an age that seems so far long and feels extraordinarily different from the current era, and yet, Sunny still fits seamlessly into the current TV landscape. In its 13th season, the show still feels vital and relevant - sometimes, in new ways than it did previously.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/11/comcast-to-launch-2-new-networks-disney.html

Comcast Corporation announced it has selected two new African American majority owned independent networks to be broadly distributed on Comcast Cable systems beginning in January 2019. After a thorough evaluation of dozens of proposals, Comcast selected AFRO and CLEO TV, both of which will provide quality entertainment that highlights and features TV and movie content about African American and black communities. AFRO, a channel from Afrotainment, is a 24-hour polycultural black network mainly broadcasting top-rated Nollywood and black movies, dramas, sitcoms, music, talk, and late night comedy shows. CLEO TV is a lifestyle and entertainment network targeting Millennial and Gen X women of color. Derived from the name Cleopatra, one of the most powerful, trendsetting, rule-breaking and iconic women in history, CLEO TV will offer quality content that defies negative and cultural stereotypes of today’s modern women. The network promises a unique and diverse offering of short-form and long-form content including travel, home design, cooking, talk shows, movies, docu-series, sitcoms and much more.

The hit Golden Globe(R) nominated SHOWTIME comedy series SMILF, starring creator, executive producer and showrunner Frankie Shaw in her Golden Globe-nominated performance and multiple Emmy(R) Award winner Rosie O'Donnell, will return to the network on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. To preview what's to come for Bridgette Bird (Shaw) - a single mother living fearlessly - and her family, exes and friends, SHOWTIME has debuted a new season two trailer. Filmed on location in Boston, this season finds Bridgette trying to move forward and focus on her future, while attempting to exorcise old ghosts and atone for past misdeeds. She's still toiling away in her day job working for narcissistic boss Ally (guest star Connie Britton). Meanwhile, Bridgette's mother Tutu (O'Donnell) rallies from a heartbreaking setback punctuated by the presence of her co-dependent younger sister Jackie (guest star Sherie Rene Scott). Ex-boyfriend Rafi (Miguel Gomez) and his girlfriend Nelson Rose (Samara Weaving) grow closer, while Eliza (Raven Goodwin, now a series regular) deals with her own family drama. Viewers will also go back in time to witness the highly unconventional birth of Bridgette's beloved son, Larry (Alexandra and Anna Reimer).

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/11/fri-yay-appreciation-for-mike-schurs.html

Recently, I've been engaging on a rewatch of Parks and Recreation. It's a show I haven't revisited too much since its end, and it's made me forget just what a delightful little show it was. It was funny, optimistic and filled with likable characters, and while its optimistic view on politics already seems somewhat outdated, the show's strengths more than make up for it. What else I saw it in, though, was a little bit of Mike Schur's future sitcoms - Brooklyn Nine-Nine and especially The Good Place. In many ways, the critical adoration of Parks and Recreation could be directly traced to those two shows. So in this blog post, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge Parks and the world of Mike Schur comedies it created.

TV NEWS NOVEMBER 9

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/11/fri-yay-when-is-it-time-to-stop-looking.html

This fall has been disastrous for network TV ratings. Huge, giant sitcoms like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory are down to all-time low numbers. Veteran hits like The Goldbergs and Superstore are at levels well below even just last season. And while there have been new sitcoms such as The Neighborhood and The Kids Are Alright to do fairly well, their numbers would've been deemed cancel-worthy just a few seasons ago. Not to mention shows like Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless, moved to Friday nights only to see almost their entire live audience abandon them. It's been a grim fall for sitcoms on network TV, even ones generally doing well, at least if your name isn't The Conners. And yet, when everything is so low, one has to ask...is it time to stop looking at live ratings as a measure for success?

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/11/tbs-pairs-shaq-and-ken-jeong-for-comedy.html

TBS has picked up the unscripted comedy Unqualified (wt) to pilot. Following their magnetic showdown on the network's rap battle series Drop the Mic, Shaquille O'Neal and Ken Jeong are pairing up again for Unqualified (wt), which will follow the unlikely duo as they take on different odd jobs. Between them, there are very few things these two iconic Renaissance men can't do. Shaq easily shifted from court to courtside commentary as an analyst for Turner Sports' Emmy Award-winning Inside the NBA on TNT. And Jeong really is a medical doctor as well as playing one on TV. But can they be scuba instructors? Line cooks? Dental hygienists? Nude art class models? All in one day?

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Halloween is past us, so that means we're officially into sweeps month (which may not be quite the huge deal it used to be in the streaming media era, but it hasn't been totally diminished) and before you know it, we'll be talking about Christmas programming and marathons. In fact, Hallmark Channel is already there! Today, we've got news about the renewal of a Netflix series, more Step by Step on DVD (side note: DVD releases have slowed down so much this year that this appears to be the only older sitcom that will be released on DVD for all of November and December, months that used to be very busy), and more. Let's get going!
