This is it! Gloria Estefan is (finally!) coming to Netflix's One Day at a Time. Get on your feet for Gloria Estefan! Netflix announced Monday that the Grammy Award-winning performer will guest-star in an episode of One Day at a Time's much-anticipated third season. Estefan -- who is also the voice behind the series' theme song, a Cuban-tinged cover of the original comedy's opener -- will play Mirtha, Lydia's (Rita Moreno) baby sister and arch-nemesis. A reimagining of the iconic Norman Lear's classic sitcom, One Day at a Time is an hilarious and heartfelt comedy that follows three generations of a Cuban-American family navigating the ups and downs of life. A newly-single mom and military veteran journeys through the triumphs and tribulations that come with raising two strong-willed, mega-millennial children, all the while enlisting the "help" of her old-school mother and her building manager-turned-invaluable confidant. Through an contemporary lens, One Day at a Time offers a glimpse at what life looks like, in good times and bad -- and how those around you somehow make it all worthwhile.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/fri-yay-unbreakable-kimmy-schmidt.html
Despite being one of the funniest shows on television, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has spent a lot of its four-season run defending itself. Although its joke writing and characters are top-notch comedy gems much like on Fey and Carlock's previous show 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt has never quite reached the level of widespread acclaim that 30 Rock did due to the show's questionable handling of sensitive topics and especially its tendency to appear tone-deaf when dealing with hot button issues. The show's portrayal of Jacqueline (portrayed by the very white Jane Krakowski) as a Native American was the first aspect of the show to really make headlines, but it was followed in the second season by an episode that seemed to brush off the legitimate criticism of the plotline, followed by several episodes in the third season that had some fairly trite takes on political correctness and "call out culture." The things that Kimmy Schmidt is good at - creating a unique world of characters, amazing jokes, and messages of female empowerment - were often overshadowed by the uproar over the show's tendency to drop the ball when covering these touchy topics. Additionally, like many streaming sitcoms, Kimmy Schmidt sometimes has the tendency to go long (many episodes run 30 minutes or more) without the restraints of the traditional sitcom model, which can result in episodes that feel overstuffed.

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're into our usual summer slump of
news, although a week later than usual due to the cancellation of Roseanne
giving us plenty of news last week. This week, we're some musings from
past TV series from the ATX Television Festival, learning of the renewal
of a popular FX series, and more. Let's get going!

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/fri-yay-arrested-development-returns.html
Last week, Arrested Development dropped the first half of its fifth season on Netflix (the second half will be released at an unspecified later date, an interesting strategy that Netflix is also using for the fourth season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). It's been five years since the fourth season dropped on the streaming service in May 2013 - and, of course, when the fourth season was released it had been seven years since the abrupt conclusion of the series' original run on Fox. The revival of Arrested Development was one of the first Netflix original series and arguably the major flagship of Netflix's foraging into original content (along with House of Cards). In many ways, it's a great representation of this new era of peak TV. The cancellation of the original run of Arrested Development had long been one of the biggest examples of a network failing a widely beloved series, and Netflix swooping in like a savior to bring the show back after nearly a decade off the air seemed to signal a new era of TV, where a fan-beloved but slightly off-kilter sitcom could succeed and even thrive without the constraints of network television. And yet, through-out both the fourth and fifth seasons of Arrested Development, two thoughts often popped into my mind: 1) It's super cool that they were able to bring this show back, and 2) This show probably should've stayed dead.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/starz-comedy-now-apocalypse-gets-lead.html
Starz, a Lionsgate company, announced that Avan Jogia (Twisted, Victorious) has been cast in the lead role of Ulysses for Now Apocalypse, the recently greenlit, straight-to-series comedy from creator and executive producer Gregg Araki (Kaboom, Mysterious Skin). Jogia will play "Ulysses," a recent transplant to Los Angeles, who is struggling to find his place in the world. Something of a thrill seeker, Ulysses admits that he's always had an attraction to and fear of the unknown and is plagued by recurring nightmares, which he believes are a portent for a vast, sinister conspiracy.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/summer-sitcom-burn-off-news-remembering.html
We have good news and bad news for summer sitcom burn-offs of canceled fresh sitcoms. Well technically not canceled (but 99.9% likely it is), Ghosted returns to Fox on Sunday (June 10) and will air at 8:30pm and 9:30pm before moving to Sundays at 9:30pm for a month beginning June 17. Nine episodes have aired so far this season, with the last airing in January, but we now will have seven episodes airing this summer. The single-camera comedy is an action-comedy about the unlikely partnership between two down-on-their-luck polar opposites tasked with an even more unlikely mission: saving the human race from aliens. The series stars Adam Scott as Max Jennifer, Craig Robinson as Leroy Wright, Ally Walker as Captain Ava LaFrey, Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Barry Shaw, and Amber Stevens West as Annie.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/mom-and-two-and-half-men-make-nick-at.html
Nick at Nite and TV Land will switch sitcoms come next week. Starting Monday, June 11, TV Land will move Mom to Nick at Nite, while Nick at Nite will move Two and a Half Men to TV Land. Mom will air four episodes every night beginning at 1am on June 11 on Nick at Nite. Meanwhile, TV Land will begin Two and a Half Men on June 11 as well airing every night 10-11pm and 1-2am. There will be a weekend stack next weekend as well on Saturday from 8am-4pm and Sunday from 5pm-11pm. Both sitcoms already air on sister network Paramount Network back-to-back every weekday from 1-7pm leading into Friends. All of this is another case of Viacom-owned network sharing. Mom stars Anna Faris and Academy Award winner Allison Janney and is heading into its sixth season next fall on CBS.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2018/06/sitcomsonline-digest-so-now-what-for.html
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Well, it's been a fascinating week of
sitcom news this week (normally the week of Memorial Day is the kick off
to our slow season, but not this time!), to say the least. This week, Roseanne made history by dethroning Bridget Loves Bernie as the highest rated series to ever be canceled. We're also hearing about potential replacements for Roseanne,
including a spinoff of the series as well as the spinoff of a
completely uncontroversial ABC sitcom about a midwestern family. We
promise, nothing that we're reporting this week is being reported under
the influence of any sort of prescription sleep medication, so let's get
going!
