Lehigh football team trying to stay calm after the storm

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Just back from a Lehigh football media session held outdoors because there is no power indoors on the Goodman Campus where the team practices. Lehigh, like everyone else, has been dealing with the aftershocks of Hurricane Sandy, and is trying to maintain focus entering Saturday's game at Holy Cross. Players have had to worry about living accomodations since most of the campus was without power for two days, although some sections have been restored. "A lot of guys were worried about where they were going to get their next meal let alone where we were going to stay," wide receiver Lee Kurfis said. "It was hard to maintain focus, but the coaches were on us and kept us ready to go. We got some good practices in and we'll be ready to go come Saturday."

A look at the Allen-Dieruff football series through the years

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER It again doesn't have any district playoff ramifications and it probably doesn't rank among the best games of the weekend. But to the kids at both Allen and Dieruff, this Saturday afternoon's contest between the Canaries and Huskies remains a big deal. For Allen, it is a chance to have a three-win season for the first time since the program was 4-6 in 2005. For Dieruff, it's a chance to snap at 38-game losing streak that dates back to the 2008 game against Allen. This is the 56th meeting in the series. Two times -- in 1992 and in 2002 -- the teams met twice with the second meeting coming in the playoffs. Allen holds a 31-24 series lead. The record by decades: 1950s -- Allen 1-0 1960s -- Allen 7-3 1970s -- Dieruff 7-3 1980s -- Tied, 5-5 1990s -- Allen 7-4 2000s -- Allen 8-5. Best Allen streak -- Winning four straight games from second game of 1992-95 and 2003-06. Best Dieruff streak -- Winning three straight games from 1974-76, 1984-86, and 1996-98. Allen's largest margin of victory: 38-0 in 2006. Dieruff's largest margin of victory: 53-0 in 2008. (Note: Dieruff has scored 40 or more points 8 times; Allen has scored 40 or more twice). Total points scored: Allen 926, Dieruff 1030. And, here's a look at all of the scores of the past games: 1959 -- Allen 13, Dieruff 7 1960 -- Allen 26, Dieruff 20 1961 -- Dieruff 14, Allen 13 1962 -- Allen 7, Dieruff 0 1963 -- Allen 21, Dieruff 6 1964 -- Dieruff 13, Allen 0 1965 -- Allen 14, Dieruff 7 1966 -- Allen 7, Dieruff 6 1967 -- Dieruff 60, Allen 12 1968 -- Allen 30, Dieruff 27 Thanksgiving Games 1969 -- Allen 40, Dieruff 6 1970 -- Dieruff 19, Allen 14 1971 -- Dieruff 45, Allen 6 Back to Friday night games 1972 -- Allen 21, Dieruff 18 1973 -- Allen 34, Dieruff 6 1974 -- Dieruff 36, Allen 0 1975 -- Dieruff 29, Allen 6 1976 -- Dieruff 55, Allen 19 1977 -- Allen 7, Dieruff 0 1978 -- Dieruff 19, Allen 14 1979 -- Dieruff 14, Allen 6 1980 -- Allen 14, Dieruff 0 1981 -- Dieruff 10, Allen 8 1982 -- Allen 27, Dieruff 14. 1983 -- Allen 15, Dieruff 12 1984 -- Dieruff 20, Allen 0 Thanksgiving Games, part II 1985 -- Dieruff 12, Allen 0 1986 -- Dieruff 12, Allen 6 1987 -- Allen 9, Dieruff 7 1988 -- Allen 8, Dieruff 7 1989 -- Dieruff 14, Allen 6 1990 -- Allen 21, Dieruff 0 Back to being a regular Week 10 game 1991 -- Allen 22, Dieruff 9 1992 -- Dieruff 32, Allen 27 1992 -- Allen 14, Dieruff 7 (District 11 championship) 1993 -- Allen 26, Dieruff 21 1994 -- Allen 24, Dieruff 15 1995 -- Allen 15, Dieruff 0. 1996 -- Dieruff 42, Allen 6. 1997 -- Dieruff 46, Allen 6 1998 -- Dieruff 45, Allen 20 1999 -- Allen 34, Dieruff 13. 2000 -- Dieruff 28, Allen 21 (overtime) 2001 -- Allen 42, Dieruff 21 2002 -- Dieruff 21, Allen 14 2002 -- Dieruff 52, Allen 20 (Eastern Conference) 2003 -- Allen 28, Dieruff 9 2004 -- Allen 14, Dieruff 0 2005 -- Allen 28, Dieruff 8 2006 -- Allen 38, Dieruff 0 2007 -- Dieruff 32, Allen 0 2008 -- Dieruff 53, Allen 0 2009 -- Allen 34, Dieruff 8 2010 -- Allen 44, Dieruff 32 2011 -- Allen 25, Dieruff 21

Premiere dates haven't been announced for the Anne Heche comedy Save Me or the dramas Do No Harm and Hannibal. Stay with us for any updates. What do you think of NBC's mid-season schedule? Discuss it on our message board. The Neighbors ABC has given a full-season order to its freshman comedy The Neighbors. The series about a human family living in a neighborhood of aliens has performed decently in the ratings. It has been pretty consistent in its Wednesday timeslot by averaging 6.8 million viewers and beating NBC's new comedy Guys with Kids. Not surprisingly, it does well in the kids 2-11 and teens 12-17 demos. Sophomore drama Scandal has been picked up for its first full season. The Shonda Rhimes political thriller starring Kerry Washington is doing solid ratings on Thursday nights at 10pm ET/PT. It averages around 8.1 million viewers and a 2.5 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo. DVR use boosts it 45 percent. ABC hasn't announced anything about Nashville, Last Resort or 666 Park Avenue yet. More scripts for Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue have recently been ordered. We'll keep you posted. Look for our review of the pilot episode of Reba McEntire's Malibu Country tomorrow. DeSean Jackson: "Coach Reid's back is against the wall."

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Courtesy of a NFL Network release, we get these snippets from DeSean Jackson and Donovan McNabb. This morning, both Jackson and McNabb joined NFL AM on the NFL Network. The following are excerpts from the interview: DeSean Jackson: (On the possibility of a change at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles) “We are too good of a team to be on a three-game losing streak, so whatever it is we can do to get things rolling that is what we are here to do.” (On if a quarterback change will help the Eagles turnaround the season) “You never know until it happens.” (What is different about quarterback Michael Vick this season) “I don’t think he is as comfortable as he usually is [running the offense].” (On Coach Reid) “This is a big year for us. There is no room to be struggling. I know Coach Reid’s back is against the wall. We just have to figure it out.” (On how to improve the Eagles) “Everyone has to be accountable. Everyone can’t look at anyone else and question [them]. It has to start with each individual… look at their mistakes and correct them.” Additionally, Donovan McNabb was in studio. Here is what he had to say about the Eagles’ situation: Donovan McNabb: (On if quarterback Nick Foles gives the Eagles a better shot to win) “No not at all. They have more issues than just the quarterback position.” (On how Michael Vick improves going forward) “He has to focus on his job. If you focus on your job, you block everything out. Once you start hearing the boos, hearing the radio station talk, people outside [the organization] bringing your name up[about] being benched, then you begin to lose focus. He needs to feed off his play last week [where he didn’t turn the ball over].”

After low World Series TV ratings, who will be in the 2013 Fall Classic?

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER From the moment that Pablo Sandoval took Justin Verlander deep twice in Game 1, there never seemed to be a doubt about who would win the 2012 World Series. And, maybe, that's why no one except Giants fans could get emotionally attached to this year's Series, which was over -- so it seemed -- before it started. The television ratings revealed that few people really cared about San Francisco's four-game sweep because it set an all-time low.

Sports Media Weekly No. 125

http://sportsmediajournal.com/page/3/ Hurricane Sandy battered the eastern seaboard but did not deter us from producing a new Sports Media Weekly. Our scheduled guest could not join us due to him being from the New York/New Jersey area, so Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I are riding solo. We begin the program by looking at the record low ratings for Fox Sports on the Giants’ four game sweep of the World Series. Even though the viewership numbers were steady, the average rating of 7.6 was the lowest ever. We then look at the big news that NBC Sports has secured the rights to English Premier League soccer beginning next season. We discuss what the move means for NBC as well as incumbents Fox and ESPN. We move on to the NBA season beginning tonight and our expectations for TNT, ESPN, and NBA TV this year. We wrap-up the show on the news, broken by Ken a few weeks ago, that the Dan Patrick Radio Show will be simulcast on the NBC Sports Network beginning on Monday at 9:00a.m. ET.

http://sportsmediajournal.com/page/4/ Those of you familiar with SMJ have noticed we have a menu at the top of the site entitled “All Media is Local”. We envisioned this as a place for visitors to find the local media entities covering their favorite sports team. To date we have only populated the NFL link in the menu. Beginning this week, we will be posting entries for every NBA team, just as the new season gets underway. It will take a few weeks to get to each NBA franchise. As with the NFL we are only focusing on the media in the immediate host city of each team. We know there are other outlets who do a great job covering their local team. If your favorite reporter/blogger is not on our list, please add them in our comments section. We hope this crowd sourcing effort will result in a more comprehensive list of local media.

TV NEWS ON OCTOBER 30

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/10/nbc-orders-additional-up-all-night.html BC has ordered three additional episodes of Up All Night, which will bring their season two total to 16 episodes. The series will go on a winter break after episode 11 airs in December. When the show comes back in the spring 2013, it will return as a multi-camera sitcom for the final five episodes of the season. The sophomore comedy, which stars Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, and Luka Jones, has struggled in the ratings on Thursday nights. It has averaged around only three million viewers. NBC tried a switch like this before in 2003 with Watching Ellie. The series, which starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren Bowles (Julia's real life half-sister) and Steve Carell, originally aired as a single-camera comedy from February-April 2002. When they returned almost a year later in April 2003, they switched to a multi-camera format. Unfortuntely, the format change didn't work for them as they had even lower ratings. A couple of other sitcoms made the switch from single-camera to multi-camera with much better success. The Odd Couple's first season was shot single-camera with a laugh track added. The other four seasons were shot with three cameras and in front of a studio audience. Happy Days is the best-known series to switch formats. Their first two seasons were shot single-camera with the laugh track added. When they made the switch to the multi-camera format in season three, they became a huge hit. What do you think of NBC's decision? Discuss it on our Up All Night message board. They have a couple of other multi-camera sitcoms in Guys with Kids and Whitney. They had much success with multi-camera sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld in their glory days, so this seems like a good move. Burning Love Paramount's Insurge Pictures and Yahoo! announced yesterday that Burning Love, the popular comedy series that spoofs reality dating shows, will return for two more hilarious seasons on Yahoo! Screen in 2013. The break-out video program premiered June 4 domestically on the Yahoo! Comedy Channel to critical acclaim. Burning Love is a web spoof of the series The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The series follows fireman Mark Orlando (Ken Marino) in his search for the perfect woman to marry or at least be engaged. Many familiar actors from film and television have appeared in the scripted comedy series. Michael Ian Black appears as the host, Bill Tundle. Other characters are played by Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Adam Scott, Mo Gaffney, Mather Zickel, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ryan Hansen and Paul Scheer. The contestants on the show include Kristen Bell, June Diane Raphael, Ken Jeong, Malin Akerman, Natasha Leggero, Abigail Spencer, Noureen DeWulf, Jennifer Aniston, Beth Dover and Janet Varney. The series is written by Erica Oyama (Children's Hospital) and directed by Ken Marino. Seasons two and three will feature returning cast members Ken Marino, June Diane Raphael and Natasha Leggero as well as new characters in their quest to find true love. Season Two, which is coming in January 2013, will follow Julie (June Diane Raphael), who failed to capture Mark Orlando's heart in Season One of Burning Love, as she searches for love in a group of guys who are hopefully all there for the right reasons. In Season Three, Burning Down the House reunites our favorite rejected guys and girls as they return to the Burning Love mansion to compete for a hefty prize and for each other's affection.

Kick-off is 8:30p.m. ET with Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden, and Lisa Salters. Pre-game action begins at 6:30p.m. ET with Monday Night Countdown. From ESPN PR, here are the anticipated highlights for the show: ‘Gruden Extra’ with Larry Fitzgerald: Since entering the National Football League in 2004, Larry Fitzgerald has been one of the league’s top wide receivers. He passed the 10,000 career receiving yards mark earlier this year, but more importantly, he has been a team leader for the Cardinals. This week, the Pro Bowl receiver sits down with Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden in the MNF bus to discuss the Cardinals season. Rick Reilly Feature on William Gay: William Gay was just seven when his mother was shot and killed by his step-father, a senseless act of violence that turned his life upside down. Jim Harbaugh Soundtracks: In just his second season, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has infused his personality into his football team. Parkland girls volleyball team, Allen football team spotlighted on "Calling All Sports"

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER If you are fortunate enough to have electrical power and your TV available tonight and tomorrow, The Morning Call's "Calling All Sports" TV show features two very different high school teams this week. The No. 1 ranked and defending state champion Parkland girls volleyball team will be featured with coach Mike Krause and senior star players Kelly Robertson and Taylor Krause. Also, on the heels of their second victory of the season and looking ahead to Saturday's big game against Dieruff, Allen football coach George Clay and standout player Zak Dakes are also guests. I appreciate the coaches and athletes from both teams for braving the bad weather today to make it to the studio for the taping. The show can be seen at 8 tonight on Service Electric TV2 and at 6 tomorrow on RCN-4.

This year, "25 Days of Christmas" will feature the world premiere of the ABC Family original holiday musical, The Mistle-Tones, starring Tia Mowry (The Game, Tia and Tamera) and Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210). Premiering Sunday, December 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), the new original movie follows Holly (Mowry), a young woman who decides to create her own Christmas singing group when she is turned down for a spot in legendary group The Snow Belles by the mean spirited Marci (Spelling). The holiday cheer continues with the ABC Family premiere of the charming holiday movie Fred Claus, starring Vince Vaughn, on Tuesday, December 4 from 10:00PM-12:30AM ET/PT and the basic cable premiere broadcasts of Disney's A Christmas Carol on Thursday, December 6 from 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT and Despicable Me on Saturday, December 8 from 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT. Among the movies I didn't mention airing include Richie Rich's Christmas Wish, A Dennis the Menace Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone 4, The Santa Clause, The Santa Clause 2, The Santa Clause 3, Holiday in Handcuffs, and Christmas Cupid. And among the specials I didn't mention include Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas, Mickey's Christmas Carol, Winnie the Pooh & Christmas Too, Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, The Little Drummer Boy, Pinocchio's Christmas, The Story of the First Christmas Snow, Disney Prep & Landing, Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice, and A Chipmunk Christmas. Holiday episodes of sitcoms like Boy Meets World, 8 Simple Rules, & Reba will air in their time periods and Full House will get a special airing on Monday, Dec. 24 at 9am, as that series has been on hiatus for awhile. Also, just for the holidays, a holiday mini-marathon of the '90s series Beverly Hills 90210 will air Thursday, Dec. 20 from 7am-11am leading into movies starring cast members from the series like Christmas Caper starring Shannen Doherty. Other ABC Family December 2012 highlights includes the ABC Family premiere of the Eric Bana movie Hulk on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 8pm and the ABC premiere premiere of Spy Kids on Saturday, December 29 at 9:30am. View the FULL 2012 ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas schedule. You won't want to miss anything, so print out and enjoy! A Cheers reunion maybe? Rhea Perlman will reunite with longtime friend and former Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley in the sitcom pilot Giant Baby. Perlman will play Thelma, Maddie's (Alley) long-suffering assistant and best friend, who encourages her boss to form a relationship with the son she gave up for adoption, Arlo (previously known as Owen). The network originally announced the Alley-headlined project as a presentation last month. Giant Baby revolves around Madison "Maddie" Banks, a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when Arlo, her long-lost son, turns up looking to connect after his adopted mother has died. However, Maddie doesn't exactly see nerdy and schlubby Arlo fitting in with her luxurious lifestyle. When her attempt to change Arlo backfires, Maddie finds that perhaps they both could use a little change in their lives. Giant Baby is written and executive produced by Marco Pennette and is also executive produced by Kirstie Alley and Jason Weinberg. Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox serve as executive producers for TV Land. Both Alley and Perlman were in the ABC pilot The Manzanis last season but it never made it past pilot. Stay with us to see if this pilot goes past the pilot stage and gets a series order. There is a good chance it will and it will join Hot in Cleveland, Happily Divorced and The Exes. But stay tuned...
