Week 1 high school football picks: Headin' for the mountains

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Can't believe another high school football season begins tonight. It was October 1979 -- I was just 18 and four months out of high school when I covered my first game for The Morning Call as a part-timer. That was what -- wow -- 33 years ago. I've been covering high school football with regulaity every fall since 1982, my first year as a full-timer. People complain about high school football getting too much coverage, most of the complaints coming from soccer, field hockey and volleyball parents, but the truth is that nothing unifies a school community better than football. Attendance isn't what it used to be, but it's still the top draw when it comes to high school athletics and there is a good reason why youth groups and Homecoming and Hall of Fame committees use football as the backdrop for their events. They know football has a better chance of bringing out more people, garnering more interest, than any other sport. I begin this season with a first. For the first time, I am covering a game at Pocono Mountain East High School. That's where Dieruff will play its first MVC football game ever. I've been to East for a bunch of basketball games over the years, but never football. You can follow me on Twitter @KeithGroller for updates. Well, at least if I can get on the Internet in the Pocono East pressbox. I am little worried about that since I've already received word that the scoreboard there in Swiftwater will not be operational tonight. Here are my Week 1 predictions: MOUNTAIN VALLEY CONFERENCE Pocono Mt. East 35, Dieruff 7 -- The Cardinals feature an abundance of speed. Dieruff, by all accounts, is much better in terms of organization and structure and Kyle Beller is so enthusiastic that you can't help but root for him. This, however, will be a work-in-progress. I am impressed with the Dieruff Alumni Association getting together and making the trip up there to support the kids. Central Catholic 42, Allen 13 -- One more reminder of why it was time for the Canaries (and Huskies) to get out of the Lehigh Valley Conference. Marian Catholic 33, Lehighton 13 -- Maybe Stan Dakosty will go easy on one of his former players, new Lehighton coach Tom McCarroll, who is another likable, enthusiastic guy who will work hard. This year, though, may be a struggle. Freedom 34, ES South 20 -- I covered this game a year ago and the Patriots totally outclassed the Cavs. This one should be much more competitive, but the Pates may have too much firepower. Stroudsburg 27, Northampton 14 -- The Mounties, behind a powerful offensive line, figure to spoil Jeff Brosky's debut with the K-Kids. Nazareth 41, Pleasant Valley 21 -- Another LVC-MVC matchup that was a blowout last season. It should be more competitive this time. Andy "Weave" Weaver will be happy. Weave wanted me to get this info out there: "The Nazareth Fall Booster Clubs as well as all the Nazareth schools will be selling Pink T-Shirts and Hooded Sweatshirts to raise money for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. We have a target of selling 2000 pieces of clothing and only have a short three weeks to do it!! We will be placing the orders on Friday, September 14th so all the clothing is delivered by September 30th. As you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we plan to have a “Think Pink” games for all the Fall Sports. We will have all the Team support each other attending their games wearing their pink clothing to show support for their fellow athletes and highlight the awareness of breast cancer. The football team's think pink game is Oct. 12. Becahi 34, PM West 14 -- Got to visit the West campus for the first time a few weeks ago. Nice place. But Jim McCarroll, like his nephew Tom, may struggle with the Panthers and the Golden Hawks figure to be improved from a year ago. ES North 26, Honesdale 13 -- North is another nice place, once you get there. Quite scenic in that area, but watch out for the deer. North should play Saturday afternoon games to showcase that colorful fall scenery. The T-wolves have that triple-option attack and some weapons to use it well this season. LEHIGH VALLEY CONFERENCE Parkland 28, Delaware Valley 14 -- It will be interesting to see how the additions of Tim McGorry and Tim Moncman will change the look with the Trojans. Don't sleep on Del Val, a very strong District 2 program. Whitehall 27, Spring-Ford 20 -- Another LVC contender goes on the road for what should be a competitive opener. Let's see if my Lehigh media colleague Mike Yadush gets his defense to play well against what should be a potent Rams offense. Easton 21, Pennsbury 7 -- The Brad Wilkins Era begins at quarterback for the Red Rovers, who get a chance to show if they're worthy of all the hype. Emmaus 28, Germantown 14 -- Germantown was 7-5 last season and its 35-12 loss in Week 1 to Emmaus was its worst of the season. What I am saying is, the Green Hornets better not overlook the Bears. Liberty 33, State College 21 -- My guess is that the start of the football season couldn't come soon enough for everyone in Centre County after the dark cloud that has hovered over Mt. Nittany since November. The Hurricanes have a dynamic receiving combo in KJ Williams and Boise Ross. COLONIAL LEAGUE Bangor 41, Salisbury 7 -- Should be another good football season in the Slate Belt. Northwestern 21, Palisades 14 -- A matchup of first-year head coaches (well at least at Palisades for former Allen coach Kevin Ronalds). I like both guys and wish them well. Palmerton 28, Notre Dame 20 -- I wonder how Bob Mlkvy, Ed Hedes, John Hrebik and all of my Palmerton friends are doing. Come to think to it, those three might be my only Palmerton friends. This one actually should be a real close game between programs trying to turn the corner. Pen Argyl 33, Saucon Valley 19 -- Green Knights are in for a number of good nights, and solid Saturday afternoons this season, but the Panthers have experience and this could be a good one. Catasauqua 20, Wilson 13 -- I've heard a lot about Warriors receiver Dan Grupp, from his father Lew, one of the Stellar basketball gurus. Super Lew says watch out for Wilson. Tom Falzone and Co. have done a great job with Roughies over the past three seasons and look to get Year No. 4 off to a good start. Southern Lehigh 27, Northern Lehigh 21 -- The game of the night in the Colonial as the Bulldogs unveil their new "synthetic" turf field. I refer to this one as the Mike Feifel Bowl since he's on the Spartans staff but lives in the heart of Bulldogs country and his son, Zach, is a two-way senior lineman for Northern Lehigh. OTHERS Tamaqua 34, Jim Thorpe 14 -- Olympians desperate to avoid another 0-7 start. Mahanoy Area 34, Panther Valley 12 -- Wonder how my friends at Kelly's Irish Pub in Lansford are doing? My guess is that place will be hopping at 9 tomorrow morning for Notre Dame-Navy from Dublin. Quakertown 21, Upper Perk 14 -- Steve Moyer's debut with the Indians is spoiled. Pennridge 28, Haverford School 21 -- Rams get revenge for Week 1 loss last year. Southern Columbia 48, Pius X 28 -- Despite all of its personnel losses, the Royals won't be too bad this season and with Phil Stambaugh calling the plays, they will always score. But mighty Southern Columbia, while not as good as in the past, are probably still too much.

Opening day rant: It's time to take the high school transfer rule off the books

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER With apologies to those who have already had golf and tennis matches, today truly marks the start of a new high school sports year. But instead of a fresh start with an optimistic outlook, it's the same old issues that are drawing attention. Lots of attention. And it's not good. Nothing has caused more hard feelings, bad blood and even the breakup of leagues like kids transferring, often with allegations of recruiting being involved. However, at this point it's clear that everybody should just throw up their hands and say kids can go wherever they want to go to play. Because there is not a more meaningless rule in the PIAA handbook than the one that states a student-athlete can't transfer for athletic reasons. Even when district officials know what's happening and they try to enforce the rule, they are overtuned by the PIAA or have to rescind it in some form as was the case this week with Boise Ross and Petey Hernandez. I sympathize with new district chairman Jason Zimmerman, the Northwestern Lehigh athletic director, who told colleague Stephen Miller that he hadn't slept for two nights because he felt bad that the committee had blocked Ross and Hernandez on Tuesday. Zimmerman is a good guy. "We're here for the kids," he said. But he also said: "We want kids going to school where they belong and honoring the game. That's really what we want." Sadly, kids and their parents now believe they "belong" to any school that will have them as long as that school serves their needs. Things like honor, tradition and commitment to a particular school district or school just because you live in that town or were part of that program for years are easily tossed aside. Remember, we clearly live in the "it's all about me" generation. It's not just about the kids and their parents either. There are a lot of horror stories out there about coaches and their surrogates openly going after kids and luring them to their programs. The kids and parents only care about themselves, and frankly, so do many -- but not all -- coaches. They know they have to win to keep their jobs and you only win, in any sport, with good players. If your feeder system isn't producing enough kids, you go out and raid another school's feeder program. To me, it's not what high school sports should be all about, but that's what it has become and what we saw this week with a much-publicized hearing and then a retraction two days later was all a giant exercise in futility. And this is not an attack on private schools as they lose as many kids to public schools, or more, than they get in return. It's merely time to declare free agency, and get rid of a rule that obviously can't be enforced. And considering the parental meddling and how almost everyone needs to be placated by their coach or they'll threaten to leave, you may see kids play three different sports at three schools in one school year. And then head to another school the following year. This process is obviously flawed and easily circumvented. I have never understood why a school losing a kid to another school had to "challenge" a transfer to have the matter looked into. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's generally a duck. Same goes for transfers with athletic intent and I will maintain that 95 percent of these transfers involving athletes are for athletic reasons on some level. Former district chairman Jack Wabby used to tell me that you had to "trust in the integrity of the principals." But that's a risky proposition because schools like to scratch each other's back and maintain certain alliances. "You let this one go through and I'll take care of you next time," I can hear one principal saying to another. I have no idea why Pius X backed off in this case, but I would not doubt that threats were made against the Royals, who have been accused of a lot different stuff over the years and can't get into the Colonial League primarily because Colonial members have long cast a wary eye toward Roseto and how the school gets some of its athletes. Maybe Pius X was told it better back off or someone was going to try to lower the boom on them. I don't know. What I do know is that it's time to take the rule off the book and let everybody go where they want to go because while this transfer stuff does sell newspapers and draws hits to websites, it's all been proven to be a waste of time and effort.

TV NEWS ON AUGUST 31

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/08/gmc-fall-2012-schedule-with-touched-by.html Today we bring you the GMC Fall 2012 schedule! They will be adding one new series this fall, the popular '90s drama Touched by an Angel. The series will fit right in with fellow dramas like The Waltons, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and 7th Heaven. The new addition will have a launch marathon on Saturday, September 15 from 7pm-3am and an even longer one the day on Sunday, September 16 from 9am-2am. The series will then settle into its regular weekday timeslots starting Monday, September 17 at 7pm and 8pm. The series will also air on Monday nights at 9 and 10pm in primetime. All of its airings will be replacing a few 7th Heaven airings, but not to worry, that show is still scheduled in its other timeslots (see below). In fact other than these changes for Touched, there are no other schedule changes at all. We still have Family Ties kicking off weekdays 10am-12pm, 7th Heaven at noon, back-to-back hours of Judging Amy from 1-3pm, two episodes of Dr. Quinn from 3-5pm, then a double shot of 7th Heaven from 5-7pm leading into twice as nice Touched from 7-9pm. Primetime will still have a different program each night from 9-11pm: Mondays it is now Touched by an Angel, Tuesdays it is still 7th Heaven, Wednesdays still is Heartland, Thursdays it is The Waltons (which are its only regular airings now), and a movie on Fridays. Late nights will still feature two episodes of sitcom 227 at 11pm, followed by two episodes of the Sherman Hemsley comedy Amen and then two more episodes of 227 at 1am. And finally on Saturdays, it is still Sister, Sister mornings from 9am-1pm then Moesha in the afternoon and evening from 1-7pm. On the beloved Touched by an Angel, an angel named Monica (Roma Downey) and her supervisor, Tess (Della Reese), are tasked with bringing messages of love from God to troubled people. From the third season on, Monica and Tess are frequently joined by Andrew (John Dye), the angel of death (who first appeared as a recurring character in season two). In the later seasons, they are joined by Valerie Bertinelli, another rookie angel. Many guest stars appeared in the series, including Jasmine Guy, Delta Burke, Bill Cosby, John Ritter and many others. Touched By An Angel ran for 211 episodes and nine seasons until its conclusion in 2003. As for other stunts, this coming Monday they will have a "Labor" Day marathon! It's a full day of your favorite TV moms in their finest hour, or two, or 13... whatever it takes! If you love babies, or even puppies, you'll want to tune in for GMC's 13 Hours of Labor Day Marathon beginning at 10am ET with Family Ties, then The Waltons, Judging Amy, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and many episodes of 7th Heaven. View the full GMC Fall 2012 schedule. We will let you know if anything comes later this fall, but so far the only new addition is Touched by an Angel. Former District 11 championship coach resigns

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Barb Wismer, who coached Bangor to both the Colonial League and District 11 4A championships in 2008, has resigned as the Slaters softball coach. Wismer was 45-74 in her five seasons in charge with the highlight clearly coming in 2008 when the Slaters rode the pitching of Amanda Whitford to both league and district titles. The district gold was the program's first. Whitford was incredible in that postseason, tossing five consecutive shutouts. In the district final, she outdueled Northampton's Alex MacLean in a 1-0, 14-inning classic. Whitford had 24 strikeouts and tossed a three-hitter. In all, she had 91 strikeouts in 42 playoff innings through leagues and districts. Bangor, however, lost its first state playoff, falling to Garnet Valley and finished the season 19-7. Whitford graduated and after her departure, the Slaters could never rekindle its 2008 magic, going just 26-67 over the next four seasons, including 7-13 in the 2012 season. In a release sent out by athletic director Mark Farnan, he made clear that night the Bangor Area School District Board of Education accepted her resignation this week and said Wismer cited in her resignation letter that family commitments and opportunities to enhance her career in education were the primary factors in her decision. Wismer is a 1997 Liberty High graduate, having played for Jimmy Lees. Her maiden name is Rutkowski. She attended East Stroudsburg University and was the head coach at East Stroudsburg North before coming to Bangor. Prior to Wismer, Larry Ott had been Bangor's softball coach for 27 years. Barb will be missed in our athletic program. She came to Bangor with outstanding credentials as a student athlete in both high school and college. During her tenure as our head softball coach she served as a positive role model to many of our female athletes.

71 coaches set to make their Pennsylvania football coaching debuts this weekend

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER If you're a a Pennsylvania scholastic football fan, the book you must have is the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Resource Guide put out by longtime high school gurus Rich Vetock and Tom Elling. To order the book, go to their website -- www.pafootballnews.com The resource guide is chock full of great information, spread over 416 pages. One of the many interesting things they haveis a listing of all the new head football coaches in Pennsylania this year. We've had more than our share of changes around here, but it seems like there's a lot of turnover all over the state as football -- like every high school sport -- is now a 12-month-a-year deal and there's a prominent burnout factor that didn't exist years ago. There are other factors as well, of course, like meddling parents for example. But the days of the 30-year coaching career at one school seems over. Not of all these guys are new head coaches because guys like George Curry, Brian Gilbert and Kevin Ronalds have been head coaches before. They are in new positions from last season. Anyway, here's the list of new head coaches in Pennsylvania football this season with districts in parentheses: Allentown Central Catholic (11): John Cupples. Altoona Area (6): John Franco Bishop Carroll (6): Greg Snyder Bentworth (7): Bob Niziol Berwick Area (2): George Curry Burgettstown (7): Terry Havelka Charleroi (7): Ed Jenkins Cochranton (10): Nate Liberty Cowanesque Valley (4): James Burns Dallas Area (2): Bob Zaruta Daniel Boone (3): Bill Parks East Allegheny (7): Jason Ruscitto Everett Area (5): Mark Kirk Fairfield (3): Darwin Seiler Fort Cherry (7): Jim Shiel Geibel Catholic (7): Sean Benjamin Germantown Academy (Ind): Matt Dence Gettysburg (3): Matt Heiser Glendale (6): Matt Irvine Hanover (3): Mike Ketterman Hempfield Area (7): Rich Bowen Huntingdon Area (6): Michael Hudy Imhotep Charter (12): Albie Crosby James Buchanan (3): Andy Stoner Jersey Shore (4): Tom Gravish Kane Area (9): Todd Silfies Keystone Oaks (7): Matt Taylor Kiski Area (7): Dave Heavner Kittanning (7): Frank Fabian Lansdale Catholic (12): Tom Kirk Lehighton (11): Tom McCarroll Lewisburg (4): Jeremy Winn. Dieruff Alumni Association helps send Huskies into football season feelin' good

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Last Sunday I was in attendance when the Dieruff Alumni Association held a picnic for the Husky football team just to let the kids know that the alumni is completely behind them as they embark on a new season in a new league. It was a very nice affair hosted by John Hughes, who was the Kiska Award winner in 1961. John is a first-class guy who has a beautiful home with an in-ground pool that was open to the kids and they took full advantage with a day full of splashes and dives. The food was excellent as well.August 28 download 085 You get the sense that many of these kids have never been treated this well and many of them were very appreciative and made sure to say "Thank You" which was very nice to see. I left after about two hours, but I bet those kids never wanted to leave. The alumni association is in its first full year under the direction of Fred Schuler and he has done a wonderful job building some enthusiasm and energy for Dieruff. And that support is not just directed toward athletes. Fred and Co. were so proud of the theater group that performed "Hairspray" last spring and won several Freddy Awards. The alumni group, and kudos to all who are involved, is directed to all areas of Dieruff High School. August 28 download 083"Unleash Husky Pride" is the motto. Tonight, they are hosting a picnic for the hard-working marching band, which we hear is sounding real good. The band will present its halftime show for the alumni. Here are some photos from the picnic, including the first one above featuring Hughes on the far left, Schuler on the far right and head coach Kyle Beller in the middle along with tri-captains Quinton Williams, Eddie Rodriguez and Damian Diaz. You can see below that the minute the kids got off the bus at John's house, they were greeted warmly.

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/08/new-york-city-local-stations-fall-2012.html t's that time of year again...fall schedules for New York City stations! I have for you the full Fall 2012 schedules for WABC, WNBC WNYW, WWOR, WPIX, and WLNY. Unfortunately, I couldn't obtain the schedules for WCBS at press time, but WCBS rarely make changes. We cannot cover every market's local schedules, so we will give you an idea what to expect by giving you the #1 market in the country: New York. And of course it helps because I live in the market! We'll start with WNYW's (Fox5) Fall 2012 schedule. There aren't any new series joining this fall, but there will be a show new to WNYW this fall as Anderson Live moves to WNYW this fall from WPIX, airing weekdays at 12 noon starting Sept. 10. Everything else is will not be new, but we do have some time changes. For WCBS (CBS2), we do not have any updates, so we apologize for that. Nothing major is likely changing, though, but they did pick-up the rights to Leverage on weekends and CSI: Miami returns to syndication replacing NUMB3RS. And WNBC (NBC4) will make the most drastic changes of the big three stations, with new series Jeff Probst airing at 2pm starting Sept. 10 and Steve Harvey weekdays at 3pm starting Sept. 4.
