OPINION: LVIA, ABE - what's in an airport name?

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Not to sound hypocritical, but after 17 years training us to use the official identity — Lehigh Valley International Airport, or LVIA, as many of us have come to refer to it — why is our local airport authority suddenly nostalgic for ABE? That’s the latest decision in corporate branding in the Valley, and it’s enough to give anyone acronymophobia. (The fear of small clumps of capital letters taking over our lives.)

In 1994, the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority jumped on the Lehigh Valley bandwagon, abandoning the old name, Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton International Airport. LVIA was born, even if it didn’t immediately take flight.
What do you call the Lehigh Valley International Airport?
Lehigh Valley International Airport or LVIA
Allentown Bethlehem Easton airport or ABE

Quantcast

Back then, local officials and residents resisted the name change, asking the obvious question: Everybody knows the airport as ABE. Will people outside Pennsylvania become familiar with LVIA and Lehigh Valley? Undaunted, the authority pushed ahead, paying a consultant $85,000 for the rebranding advice and spending much more to change signs, stationery, logos, etc.

Even today, though, the official FAA airport code and luggage ID tags remain “ABE.” People in other airports still see arrivals and departures listed as Allentown. That’s how the pilot updates us: “It’s 70 degrees and raining in Allentown.”

Undaunted, the authority this week approved a redesigned website that will bring ABE back into the fold — not as the official designation, but as authority Chairman David Haines termed it, a better use of the airport’s “dual identity.”

Or as they call it everywhere else: destination confusion.

Frankly, travelers in and around the Lehigh Valley wouldn’t care about the name if they were afforded more competitive fares to more places. And a better break on parking rates. And people who didn’t harangue us about carrying more than a few ounces of shampoo. (Sorry. That last one’s not the authority’s doing.)

The airport authority is working on its bigger problems. It secured a new management firm. It’s still dickering over how to pay off a bungled expansion plan, which resulted in a lawsuit by developers and a judgment approaching $16 million. It’s still talking about a proposal to sell another holding, Queen City Airport in Allentown, for development. This week the authority revised the marketing subsidy it pays airlines for adding new flights, so it doesn’t end up paying for billboards for soon-to-be-defunct airlines.

The overriding issue for customers, however, is the pending arrival of Southwest Airlines, via its buyout of AirTran earlier this year, to LVIA.

Or ABE.

We don’t care, as long as they’re here.

Northampton County executive recommends tax hike of 9.3 percent for 2012 - UPDATE

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Northampton County residents would pay 9.3 percent more in taxes next year under the proposed 2012 budget introduced today by County Executive John Stoffa.

Stoffa called for an 11.8-mill tax rate to finance his recommended $331.4 million budget in an afternoon news conference at the county courthouse. The hike would represent a 1-mill increase. The owner of a property with an assessed value of $100,000 would owe an extra $100 for a total of $1,180 in county taxes next year.

The 1.2 percent increase in county spending would allow the county to purchase 17 new vehicles, build a work-release center in West Easton and install a new phone system in all county buildings. The budget also includes an expected 2.25 percent raise for many of the county's union workers, he said.

"It is my opinion this is the right thing to do. A tax increase assures our financial stability as we journey down this road to financial recovery," Stoffa wrote in his report on the budget.

The budget also includes operation costs and improvements to Gracedale, the county-owned nursing home residents voted not to sell in May. Keeping Gracedale in county hands has a projected cost of $7.2 million, nearly equal to the proposed $7.4 million the county would raise through the tax increase.
REVIEW THE BUDGET: The proposed 2012 Northampton County Budget is available on the county's website.

However, Stoffa said most of the blame for the proposed hike lies with a swaption agreement the county entered in 2003. Merrill Lynch paid the county about $1.9 million upfront in exchange for the right to force the county to refinance its debt in October 2012 at a variable interest rate. Swaptions are bets that short-term interest rates will stay below long-term interest rates over time.

Right now, the county projects the swaption will cost the county $23.5 million to pay off. That price has jumped $9.5 million in the last nine months alone, he said.

County Council President John Cusick said he hopes the new management at Gracedale will be able to let the nursing home operate on a smaller budget, which would soften the tax hike. Officials with Premier Healthcare Resources, which was hired to manage the company in August, have said they’re confident they will be able to make the facility turn a profit.

“It’s my hope the new management company we brought in will be able to bring that down. The reason we brought in an outside company was to run Gracedale more efficiently,” he said.

County Councilman Ron Angle questioned some of Stoffa's recommendations, particularly the decision to take money from the county's stabilization fund. Stoffa's plan calls for borrowing $5 million from the stabilization fund, which could negatively affect the county's bond rating, said Doran Hamann, budget administrator. That would leave the fund with $20 million, $4 million more than the county is legally obligated to save.

Instead, Angle said he would release his own recommendation in the next two weeks for a budget with no tax increase. He said he would look for a way to balance the budget by reducing the size of government, not dipping into savings. He would not provide any areas he would target for savings.

"The answer is not to deplete our savings account, or we will end up like the state and federal governments," he said.

Councilman Lamont McClure took the opposite approach, saying the county could avoid tax increases by reaching into its tax surplus. Northampton County's surplus is about $18 million more than Lehigh County's, McClure said. There is no reason for Northampton County not to use its reserves to continue the county’s four year run without a tax increase, he said.

“As far as I’m concerned, this budget is dead on arrival,” McClure said.

The budget does not include any new hires for the understaffed court house, a new building for the county's archives or a central location for the human services department.

Cusick said the county council will hold budget hearings beginning Oct. 11 and will look to pass a budget Dec. 1 or 8.

Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company to break ground on new headquarters

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company is planning to break ground Saturday on its new headquarters, 155 Firehouse Lane, this weekend.

The fire company was established in 1958 by a handful of concerned residents and has since grown to include fire police, emergency medical services and a ladies auxiliary.

The company provides around-the-clock fire protection and basic life support ambulance support for about 7,500 residents, which spans an area of 25.08 square miles. The company also provides assistance to surrounding communities when requested.

The company responds to about 300 fire or rescue calls and 600 EMS calls annually.

According to members, money to build the structure has been raised over the last several years, affording the volunteers a minimal mortgage.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs add extra 'home' games to 2012 schedule

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees needed a home for the 2012 season as a result of a $40 million reconstruction project to PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.

Well, the team has found a few homes for next season, including Coca-Cola Park.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs will host eight additional games against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre next season as the Yankees are splitting their home schedule among numerous ballparks.

So that means all 16 games against the International League North Division foe will be in Allentown next season.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the Triple-A affiliate will "establish our base of operations in Rochester with more than half our home games played right there in Rochester."

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is playing 37 "home" games at the Red Wings' Frontier Field, 10 games at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, seven at Dwyer Stadium (Batavia, N.Y.), six at Coca-Cola Field (Buffalo) and four in Pawtucket.

This isn't the first time the IronPigs have been a home away from home for the Yankees. Due to poor drainage at PNC Field in 2009, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had to move a pair of home games to Lehigh Valley.

The dates and times for the additional games at Coca-Cola Park are as follows:

April 5, 7:05 p.m.
April 6, 7:05 p.m.
April 28, 6:35 p.m.
April 29, 1:35 p.m.
July 5, 7:05 p.m.
July 6, 7:05 p.m.
Aug. 29, 7:05 p.m.

5 Ways the Brady Bunch Could Have Used Twitter

FROM LAURA NACHMAN

Here’s a cute post about how The Brady Bunch would’ve handled Twitter.

http://lauranachman.wordpress.com/

The Brady Bunch was a television situation comedy that aired for five seasons on the ABC network. It was a moderate Nielsen Ratings success, usually maintaining a spot in the Top 30. There were 117 episodes in all, and the first episode was broadcast in September, 1969. The basic premise was that two single parents, each with three kids, fell in love, got married and settled in the Los Angeles suburbs.

There were no personal computers in 1969. There were no cell phones, no internet, no social networking sites and snail mail was the order of the day. You wouldn’t have friends all over the world unless you actually traveled the world; there was no “virtual” reality, only “real” reality.

The show would certainly be different if it aired today and utilized current technologies. Following are some things that would be changed if the show were being produced now.

1. No Phone Huddle – Counting the housekeeper there were nine members in the household. There were many scenes where one of the family members would be on the telephone, and everyone else would be huddled around, trying to listen to the conversation. That scene wouldn’t happen in a Twitter world.
2. #9 – This first season episode was about Mr. Brady’s frustration with the high telephone bill. His solution was to install a pay phone in the house. Calls were a dime, and the phone had a rotary dial (Brady’s never even made it to push-button phones during the series). Today, dad would be complaining about the kids talking on their cellphones instead of using their unlimited texting and twitter accounts for communicating with their friends.
3. #1 – In the first regular season episode, the kids read a letter in a newspaper advice column that they think one of their parents wrote, and they believe at least one parent is very unhappy with the whole household. The kids all write letters and mail them to the newspaper and. . .well, none of this would have happened. Kids don’t read newspapers and they don’t mail letters. They would all have been tweeting and retweeting or else creating a facebook thread.
4. #27 – In this 1970 episode, the two oldest kids, Greg and Marcia, volunteer to babysit so their parents can go out for the evening. The parents aren’t comfortable leaving the children home alone and they repeatedly try to call home but the phone is constantly busy. Worried, the parents return home to check on the kids, but the youngsters think the parents are burglars, so they call the police and. . . If Twitter was available, then the whole episode would have collapsed; 140 characters or less would manage to communicate that all was well from Greg or Marcia to Mom’s cell phone.
5. Back to the Future – If a studio tried to film this show today it would be a one-episode disaster. Imagine a nine-member household (plus easy to trip over dog) where everybody is wandering around, thumbing, thumbing, thumbing, and nobody is watching where they are going. If there was a second episode, it would be set in a hospital, and everybody’s legs and thumbs would be in casts.

I am sure the bunch would have no trouble getting into crazy situations today, but there would certainly be a few different ways for them to get there. LOL.

Wiig plays a down-on-her-luck former bakery owner who experiences the trials and tribulations of being a maid-of-honor. The ensemble cast is hilarious — including fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum Maya Rudolph as the bride-to-be — but it's Melissa McCarthy who steals the movie as bridesmaid Megan.

Dick Van Dyke Anniversity

The Dick Van Dyke Show is celebrating a big anniversary on October 3. It was exactly fifty years ago that day that the series debuted on CBS, and made a big mark in television history that only a few other series have managed to make. Several years ago, sitcom and pop-culture expert Vince Waldron wrote The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book, a book that was "the definitive history of television's most enduring comedy." Now, Waldron has written a revised and updated edition of this book, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the series. Here is our review of the revised and updated edition of The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book.

The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book (Revised and Updated Edition)

Blog Book Review - The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book (Revised and Updated Edition)
by skees53

The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book (Revised and Updated Edition) (Chicago Review Press, $18.95) is not merely a brief history of one of television's greatest classic series; it is the definitive and one-and-only official history of the series. The book takes the reader on a journey from the very infancy of the series up to the very end of the series, and gives details of every little bit of the series that most people will not know. In fact, even series creator and producer Carl Reiner says of the book "what an unexpected pleasure to read a book on a subject about which I thought I knew everything, only to find out that I didn't." Clearly, this isn't just a silly book that retells the stories we all know.

Like the previous edition of the book, we have a brief introduction to the book (and a look back at the series) from the star of the series, Dick Van Dyke. But the new edition actually has a foreword even before that, coming from what may seem an unlikely person: Dan Castellaneta! That's right, the man who plays Homer Simpson writes the foreword to this book (and he even mentions that "you may be asking yourself why they got the guy who plays Homer Simpson, maybe the dumbest dad in sitcom history, to write the foreword"). But when you read the foreword, it is very clear why he writes it. The series served as a springboard to many other series in the future, even (indirectly) The Simpsons.

Once you get past the foreword, introduction, and prologue, you get into the real meat of the book. There is definitely a ton of material to be found in this series of thirty chapters. Of course, we'd be writing all day if we told you the details of every single chapter, because each chapter is so full of details that you'll just have to read on your own! But we'll give you a brief outline of the direction that the book goes in, with some minor tidbits from the book here and there.

The first eleven chapters give a very detailed account of events leading to the creation of the series, casting decisions, producing the Head of the Family pilot (which most fans know featured Carl Reiner in the role of Rob Petrie), and producing "The Sick Boy and the Sitter," which is the first actual episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. What I found interesting, though, is a view on why the pilot starring him wasn't well received. The book says that the network executives said that it was just "lacking something," but Reiner brings up something that wouldn't be thought of nearly as much these days. Some have accused that anti-Semitism may have played a part in the demise of the first pilot, and that Carl Reiner was in fact "too Jewish" to be starring in a series... that it would be too far out of the mainstream. The book does mention, however, that Reiner finds that notion to be completely unfounded.

What is certain, though, is that Dick Van Dyke was definitely the man to make the series work. With Reiner's failed pilot, he met with Sheldon Leonard, who helped him redevelop the idea for the series, but with one major change: Reiner could not play the starring role. So enter Dick Van Dyke, the man for whom the eventual series was named for. From that point, the book goes into lengthy details on the casting for the series. The casting of Mary Tyler Moore, though, was the most interesting of them all. They could literally not find a person to fill the role of Laura Petrie, until Danny Thomas remembered "some actress" who had auditioned for him some time ago. He was convinced that she should definitely be cast in the role and she pretty much had the role, if only he could remember her name! He knew that she had three names, and of course, what other "girl with three names" could it have been?

Onto creating the first episode of the series, Reiner admits that although the episode chosen as the pilot was not random, it was probably not the best choice. We also get some insight on finding sponsors for the series, and how it turned out to be a bit easier than expected to find those sponsors.

We get a lot more history and tidbits throughout the rest of the book, much of which is difficult to summarize in one lump. We find out about the casting of the roles of other characters on the series, Laura Petrie wearing capri pants (so unusual in those days), an episode about a "revealing" portrait of Laura, filming an episode right after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and even thoughts on the Kent cigarette sponsorship of the series. In fact, the cast and crew of the series would often get free cartons of Kent cigarettes, which nobody really liked, and they'd trade their cigarettes in at the corner market for a pack of their preferred brand. What was really odd was Dick Van Dyke putting his foot down about how inappropriate it was for a family series to be advertising cigarettes--even though he and Mary Tyler Moore were both heavy smokers themselves at the time.

In "The Last Chapter" (which is not only the name of chapter 30 in the book, but also the name of the final episode), we get to see what it was like bringing the series to an end. It talks about how the end of the series was emotional, but not necessarily sad, because most of the people involved with the series actually went on to bigger and better things, and the series was merely a springboard for the remainder of their careers.

One of my favorite features of the book, though, comes in after the epilogue. The book ends with an 88 page "Complete Viewers Guide to The Dick Van Dyke Show," which is a very thorough episode guide detailing every single episode of the series. In these 88 pages, you'll find episode descriptions, original airdates, episode credits, and many behind-the-scenes and historical moments for episodes. One of my favorite trivia tidbits to read was about the inspiration for the character Sally Rogers. According to Carl Reiner, there is one person (a woman who was not an actress at a time, but a writer, much like the character of Sally) in particular who served as an inspiration for the character--Selma Diamond! Yes, the same lady that would play the first of the female bailiffs on Night Court in the 80s served as an inspiration for the character. And in thinking about Diamond's portrayal of her character in Night Court, you can almost see a little bit of Sally Rogers in her there.

If you are a fan of the series, there really is no excuse to not own this book. I've seen many books on the history of a single well-known TV series, and I usually come away from them a bit less than impressed. They often tend to regurgitate everything that we know about the series with the unique writing style of the author. Here, we actually get content that is new to most of us, and the book is a very pleasurable read. Not having seen the older edition of this book, I really can't comment on how it compares to that edition, but I can say with full confidence that this book is worth placing on your coffee table--just don't trip over the ottoman trying to get to it!

A few additional notes on the revised and updated edition:

* Revised, rewritten and completely updated from the first to the last page
* Includes tons of new photographs, many of them never before published
* New passages where needed to incorporate interesting sidelights of the show that the author has since discovered, including the existence of a Dick Van Dyke Show opera
* New illustration of the cast by Drew Friedman

Week 5 high school football picks: Is another miracle in the Cards?

FROM KEITH GROLLER

I know it's another football Friday, but I want to acknowledge the many folks who have sent me messages -- texts, e-mails, voice mails -- in the past day or so about the St. Louis Cardinals.

Yes, I am a life-long Cardinals fan. Yes, I am happy they made the playoffs. Yes, it was quite a comeback to catch the Braves. Yes, it was a memorable Wednesday night. Yes, it's always good to be playing baseball in October instead of going home.

But do I think they will beat the Phillies in this NLDS?

Uh, well, I will simply say that the Cardinals beating the Phillies would be one of the greatest upsets in recent baseball history. The Phillies are absolutely amazing. They have three pitchers who are better than anyone the Cardinals can throw out there. The offense, the benches and the bullpens are a bit more evenly matched, but the Phillies were 102-60 and the Cardinals were 90-72. That's 12 games better. That's quite significant, even in a 162-game schedule.

From a Cardinals fan's perspective, you have to be proud when your team doesn't give up and fights to the end and this team did that. I didn't think they had it in them.

If it were a one-game deal like in the NFL playoffs, a bowl game, an NCAA basketball tournament; you'd say sure, they could do it. One game, any thing's possible. But that Phillies pitching, and that pesky Hunter Pence who makes that whole lineup so much better... wow ... I just don't know.

I know there are a lot of Yankees fans out there from this area who are rooting for the Cardinals to knock out the Phillies. I've heard a lot of "Go Cardinals!" in the last few days, but the last time the Yankee fans were rooting so hard for the Cardinals was the 2004 World Series and we all remember how that turned out. This one may be headed in the same direction.

Now, back to football:

Here's my personal Top 10:

1. Nazareth

2. Whitehall

3. Freedom

4. Parkland

5. CCHS

6. Liberty

7. Easton

8. Pen Argyl

9. Northern Lehigh

10. Emmaus

Last week I was 16-4 with the picks, improving to 70-20 on the season for a lucky .777 percentage.

Here we go:

FRIDAY NIGHT

Northampton 28, Allen 21 ... A Canary win wouldn't be a shock. It would be their first LVC win over someone other than Dieruff in exactly six years -- Sept. 30, 2005 -- when Allen beat Nazareth. It would be a nice reward for the kids who have hung in there. But would it suddenly mean Allen can compete in the LVC? Please.

Freedom 62, Dieruff 6 ... Pencil the Patriots into districts because realistically they have just two tough games left -- Oct. 14 vs. Nazareth and Nov. 5 vs. Liberty.

Whitehall 35, Easton 21 ... Revenge for last year's district title game.

Parkland 21, Liberty 14 ... I said last week that Parkland defensive coordinator Sam Senneca's familiarity with Easton would be huge. Well, he's obviously even more familiar with the Hurricanes. I will be at this one, assuming the Schuylkill Expressway or Blue Route traffic isn't too much to overcome.

Catasauqua 22, Saucon Valley 14 ... Roughies finally record a win over a team that has beaten somebody else.

Northwestern 34, Notre Dame 7 .... Hearing a lot about a new basketball player with the Crusaders who is 6-foot-8. The football team could use a few 6-8 kids.

Palisades 20, Palmerton 14 ... This is the matchup that always amazes me for the distance traveled. Has to be at least an hour and 20 from Kintnersville to Carbon County. In other parts of the state, that's a backyard brawl, but around here, that's a hike.

Northern Lehigh 49, Salisbury 7 ... This will be a much more competitive matchup in boys basketball this winter.

ES North 28, PM West 7 ... T-wolves win third straight and move closer to a District 11 3A playoff berth.

Stroudsburg 34, ES South 28 ... It will be nice to have Artie Owens, Fred Ross and all associated with the unbeaten 1971 Mounties team back at the stadium tonight.

Pocono Mt. East 26, Lehighton 20 ... These Cardinals beating Stroudsburg last week was about shocking as the St. Louis Cardinals catching the Braves.

Shenandoah Valley 33, Jim Thorpe 13 ... Olympians fall to 0-5 one year after starting 6-1.

North Schuylkill 49, Marian Catholic 14 ... I think last year this is the game I picked North Schuylkill to win by something like 70-0. It turned out to be 48-2. The Colts are a little better, but the Spartans are just as good.

Panther Valley 20, Schuykill Haven 12 ... Haven has scored just a total of 20 points in its last three games. That used to be a one-quarter total for the Hurricanes back when Zach Barket was playing.

Pleasant Valley 28, Tamaqua 13 ... Using Lehighton as a gauge, and what better way to use Lehighton, this should be a close game. The Bears beat Lehighton 7-6 and the Raiders lost to the Indians 14-6.

Hatboro-Horsham 27, Quakertown 13 ... Just hearing the word Quakertown reminds me of the Quakertown Blazers and summertime baseball. Heard we're getting a new ACBL baseball team in Allentown next summer that one will play at ECTB Stadium (the old Bicentennial Park). Need to get that story nailed down next week.

SATURDAY'S GAMES

Bangor 40, Wilson 20 ... Slaters won't be challenged until Oct. 21 game against Northern Lehigh.

Pen Argyl 34, Southern Lehigh 21... We understand that retiring Spartans AD Don Harakal will be filling in at Palisades for three months. Wonder how he looks in purple.

Pius X 49, Bucktail 35 ... With all of the kickoffs that will be needed here, this one could last longer than a Cardinals baseball game with Tony La Russa's standard eight pitching changes.

Emmaus 28, Becahi 14 ... A reunion of several notables here and not all might be sweet. Emmaus kids will want to show their former coaches something and Green Hornets assistant Mike Palos will want to show his former school something as well.

Nazareth 51, CCHS 49 ... The game of the weekend and maybe the year in the Lehigh Valley Conference. Hope the guy changing the scoreboard has his fingers loosened up because there will be a lot of flicking to do. Blue Eagles win by the field goal that just wouldn't go through last year. Weave, who is hotter than the Blue Eagles offense, is going with his beloved alma mater by a 41-38 score.

That's it, 21 ways to have some fun.

Enjoy the cooler temps, and hopefully, dry weather.

Soundscapes Concert Series

Sunday, October 2, 2011

The Soundscapes Concert Series returns to the Nazareth Center for the Arts with De Benedictis & Hennegan and Bernhard Wostheinrich on Sunday, October 2, 2011 beginning at 8:00 p.m. From the promoter release:

DEAN DE BENEDICTIS: Dean’s music is the result of his will to tie an essential common thread together between opposing genres and mentalities as well as draw from them a natural sense of emotion, expanse and mystery. This Southern California-based visual and conceptual artist, known as Surface 10, has always utilized his interest in a variety of styles and cultures to enrich the quality of his musical expression.

VIC HENNEGAN: An artist and a spiritualist, Hennegan contemplates the state of humanity through his music. Hennegan’s instinctive hand creates techno-trance and ambient music in a wildly fun, uplifting spiritual experience that will take your soul on a journey to the center of ecstasy. His music emanates a unique warmth which moves the listener to a state of euphoria.

BERNHARD WOSTHEINRICH: Bernhard leads his own solo project “The Redundant Rocker” and his main collaborator is Markus Reuter (in CENTROZOON). He has also worked with Ian Boddy, Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock, No-Man singer Tim Bowness, Thorsten Niestrath, and Synapscape’s Philipp Münch.

Bernhard elicits meaning from abstraction in electronic music and painting. He has studied graphic design and has created an eclectic body of work in both graphics and music. Using a compositional approach akin to his work as a visual artist, Bernhard usually begins by improvising abstract sonic structures which are subsequently developed into an increasingly detailed aural picture.

Years of Service and Sick Day Bonus

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

The Express-Times has an article noting that Dr. Lesky will receive a lump sum payout of $60,000, give or take, for his years of service and unused sick days.

This is common practice in the schools and applies to all retirees. This is in addition to their pension. The pension is paid out provided the individual does not work in the public school system in PA. The individual can work in private sector or another state and continue to receive their pension, which is state supported, and not a 401(k) or market based.

Nazareth Area High School's Dan Harding plans to match Central Catholic's Brendan Nosovitch pass for pass

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Dan Harding has shoehorned his way into the conversation, and the discourse is an interesting one.

His Nazareth Area High School football team will be playing a key Lehigh Valley Conference football game against Central Catholic on Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium, and Harding will be on the same field with Brendan Nosovitch in a matchup of top quarterbacks in The Express-Times region.

Harding has been spectacular in Nazareth's unbeaten start, throwing for 1,138 yards, completing more than 70 percent of his passes, 12 of which have gone for touchdowns. His efficiency rating is 211.9.

Nosovitch was named Pennsylvania's Gatorade Player of the Year last fall after leading the Vikings to a 16-0 season and the PIAA Class AAA championship. He's already committed to play for Steve Spurrier at the the University of South Carolina.

During Nosovitch's sophomore season in 2009, the Vikings came to Andrew Leh Stadium and walked off with a 38-21 victory, a win that helped propel Central Catholic to the LVC and District 11 Class AAA titles. Nosovitch, in addition to playing quarterback, played free safety in that game, a position he's played sporadically since that fall.

But Harding and Nazareth coach Rob Melosky both believe they'll be seeing Nosovitch somewhere in the secondary in addition to playing quarterback.

"That would really be interesting," said Harding, who hasn't made his college choice but is looking at schools on the Football Championship Subdivision level. "He's a great player. We both play (high school) basketball, so I've got to know him a little bit through that. He's a good guy; I look forward to competing against him."

Harding has been characterized as somewhat of a late bloomer but he doesn't put much stock in that perception.

"I don't really consider myself a late bloomer," he said. "I always had faith in my abilities. (Quarterback coach) Dan Kendra has really helped me, though, working on the little things. The things he's helped me with have been on my footwork, ball handling and recognizing coverages. And he makes it fun, too. It's been a pleasure to work with him."

Kendra was a standout quarterback at Central Catholic from 1971-73 and went on to a record-setting career at West Virginia University.

The 6-foot-4 Harding has been outstanding at picking out his secondary receivers when his primary targets are covered. That's reflected in the Blue Eagles' receiving stats: Four players have caught eight or more passes along with two or more touchdowns.

Twins Adam and Andrew Bridgeforth lead the way, Adam with 26 receptions for 387 yards and three TDs and Andrew with 11 receptions for 298 yards and five scores. Dan Shepherd has nine catches for 136 and two TDs, and Alex Tonnies has added eight for 196 and a pair of scores.

Freshman running back Jordan Gray paces the ground game with 331 yards on 42 carries (7.9 yards per carry) and four TDs.

"Dan knows that this game is not between him and Nosovitch but between Central Catholic and Nazareth," Melosky said. "The match-up of those two is something that the media and fans look at. But Danny still wants to prove something. He wants to show he can lead his team to victory over a very good football team."

Though some fans may figure Saturday's game to be a shootout, Melosky said people may be surprised.

"I'd prefer it not be a track meet, but people are probably expecting that because of our Easton game (a 35-28 win) and the Liberty game (a 42-41 win)," he said. "But we need to be a little more enthusiastic and a little more violent on defense."

Nosovitch has excellent receivers at his disposal. Kevin Gulyas, a tough and clever wideout is already the all-time leading receiver in District 11 history in receptions (151) and yardage (2,618). His career catches broke the mark of 144 held by former Central Catholic receiver Jeff McGeehin (1971-73) and he broke the yardage record of 2,602 last week, a mark held by Wilson's Kowan Scott (2008-10).

Nazareth schools Superintendent Victor Lesky to receive $60,000 lump sum upon retirement

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

When longtime Nazareth Area School District Superintendent Victor Lesky steps away from the district he has overseen for more than a decade, he'll receive a lump sum payment of more than $60,000.

The payment comes in addition to his pension. He won't get any buyout to forgo future service, just the same benefit afforded to any retiring employee, the superintendent said in an e-mail.

Retiring employees get a cash payout of 1 percent of their final year salary multiplied by the total number of years worked for the district. The payout encourages long-term employees to retire and be replaced by lower salaried ones.

Lesky will earn $149,708 this year, so he is entitled to a cash payout upon retirement of $53,892 for his 36 years of service. He'll also get $6,750 in sick pay, or $45 for 150 sick days accrued. His total payout is $60,642.

Lesky said he has accrued 350 sick days but the district offers payouts for just the first 150. Lesky said he has gone without a raise for the past two years.
During Monday’s school board meeting, Lesky said he plans to retire on July 4. He has been superintendent since 1999.

Lesky said Thursday he turned down a contract extension.

"I was asked by a number of board members to consider a new contract, to continue to serve the district as Superintendent of Schools, but I have decided to look at other alternatives," he said.

Lesky said the retirement incentive has been offered to district employees for the past 25 years.

The district does not permit vacation days or personal days to accumulate, meaning Lesky would only be reimbursed for those days not used in the current 2011-12 school year and that limit is 10.

Lesky said he hasn't chosen his pension option yet. His pension will be funded through the state Public School Employees' Retirement System, not Nazareth Area School District funds.

The district plans to begin its search for a new leader next month. School board member Linda McDonald previously said the board hoped to name a candidate by December and internal prospects would be considered first.

If only the Eagles showed the same fight as their beat writers

FROM KEITH GROLLER

A lot of Eagles fans were disappointed that their favorite team came out and laid an emotional egg in their home opener against the Giants on Sunday.

The football team could have used the same fire as two of the beat writers covering the team -- Les Bowen of the Phiadelphia Daily News and Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

They evidently got into a nasty exchange via Twitter, bickering about Michael Vick's playing status, and it escalated into a verbal, and then -- at least according to some -- physical confrontation at the Eagles training facility.

The surprise is not that this happened.

It's actually a surprise that it doesn't happen more often considering that the media members often have the same large egos as the athletes they cover. In this business, you need an ego to survive or else you'll get beaten into the ground mentally. It is not an arena for those lacking confidence in themselves and there are more than a few reporters, especially in the big cities, who are certain the world revolves around them.

And remember, too, everybody is competitive with each other on the same beats and protective of their own material and accuracy.

In this case, perhaps the biggest surprise is that Howard Eskin was only involved in reporting the incident (via, what else, Twitter) and not involved in the actual incident himself.

The Eagles players got wind of what happened between Bowen and McLane and Asante Samuel had fun in the Eagles locker room. He was trying to play the role of Don King and setting up a fight between Bowen and McLane. You can hear him in the background calling "Jeff and Less to the podium" as Vick was being interviewed by the standard herd of reporters that evidently included Bowen and McLane.

Credit them for jumping right back into the assignment at hand.

Samuel's antics lightened the mood in this case and hopefully reminded everyone of the silliness of the situation. Here's a link to the Vick interview:
