Liberty falls from No. 3 in state rankings to not even a mention; but ND and Salisbury crack 2A list
FROM KEITH GROLLER
The latest state boys basketball poll was released late Sunday night by the Harrisburg Patriot News and Liberty's back-to-back losses knocked the Hurricanes from No. 3 right out of the top 10 among 4A teams.
In fact, Liberty is not even listed among in the honorable mention category after losing to Nazareth and Pocono Mountain West.
Allen is still in the top 10 -- seventh -- even after its loss in the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase to New Jersey power Gill St. Bernard's.
Probably the team that deserves some recognition and not getting much at the present time is Easton. The Red Rovers have the best record among District 11 4A teams at 13-1, but are not ranked. Admittedly, Easton has not played a difficult schedule of late. Its last three wins have come over teams that have combined for seven wins.
That figures to change soon with games against Allen, Nazareth and Liberty all upcoming.
In 3A, Central Catholic, Saucon and Wilson are all on the honorable mention list.
In 2A, Notre Dame and Salisbury have surfaced in the top 10 for the first time all season. And, in the case of Salisbury, maybe the first time ever -- at least since the Antoine Hubbard era.
The Crusaders are eighth and the Falcons 10th.
In 1A, no District 11 teams are mentioned.

Liberty loses to Pocono Mt. West, leaving LVC 0-3 at the LV Hoop Group Showcase
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Pocono Mountain West got 23 points from Tynell Fortune, including a stellar 15-for-16 effort at the foul line and held off Liberty 49-45 in the final game of the 16th annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase at parkland on Sunday.
Earlier, Parkland lost to Paul VI Catholic 58-39 of Fairfax, Va., and Allen fell to Gill St. Bernard's of Gladstone, New Jersey, 61-53.
It was not a good day for Lehigh Valley Conference members in the event that attracted close to 1,000 fans.
This is one of the top attractions of the high school boys basketball season, and St. Benedict's and Penn Wood put on a good show in the only contest on the four-game card that did not feature a Lehigh Valley team. St. Benedict's won 69-60.
But the talent was on display all day.
The Trojans (7-9) were done in by a remarkable shooting display by Paul VI's Patrick Holloway, who had eight 3-pointers in scoring 34 points. Holloway's total was second only to Emmaus graduate and current DeSales player Brian Hunter, who has the event record with 38 points against Liberty in 2007.
Zach Muhr led Parkland with 13 points and was named his team's MVP.
Allen (12-3) also ran into some hot hands.
Gill St. Bernard's guards Jaren Sina and Alex Mitola combined for 47 points, including 11 3-pointers.
Sina, a sophomore, has already orally committed to Alabama. He showed why he's headed to the SEC with a stellar 28-point effort.
Allen cut a 12-point deficit to 53-48 with 3:35 left, but couldn't get any closer. Sina closed the door with four free throws in the final 26 seconds.
Gill St. Bernard's (15-2) is the fourth ranked team in New Jersey. Allen fell to 12-3.

Allen and Parkland fall to hot shooting teams in Hoop Group event
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Parkland lost to Paul VI Catholic 58-39 of Fairfax, Va., and Allen fell to Gill St. Bernard of Gladstone, New Jersey, 61-53 in the early games of the 16th annual Hoop Group Lehigh Valley Showcast Sunday at Parkland.
This is one of the top attractions of the high school boys basketball season.
Gill St. Bernard guards Jaren Sina and Alex Mitola combined for 47 points, including 11 3-pointers.
Sina, a sophomore, has already orally committed to Alabama. He finished with 28 points.
Allen cut a 12-point deficit to 53-48 with 3:35 left, but couldn't get any closer. Sina closed the door with four free throws in the final 26 seconds.
Gill St. Bernard (15-2) is the fourth ranked team in New Jersey. Allen fell to 12-3.
Penn Wood and St. Benedict's played in the marquee attraction of the four-game card.
Liberty and Pocono Mountain West were set to close it out with an all-District 11 matchup at approximately 6 p.m.

Nazareth Won't Bring Home the Freddy
FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER
The Express-Times’ Joe Owens has his annual post regarding the NASD HS Theatre Troupe’s failure to participate in the biggest theatre event in the Lehigh Valley, the State Theatre’s Freddy Awards which of course prompts my annual post on the same.
If you haven’t seen the Freddy’s either live or on TV, the program is designed to celebrate HS theatre productions in an Award Show format at the State Theatre in Easton. All of the entered schools attend the event and many perform on stage some of the top numbers from their show. In addition to the students being recognized and getting to know one another through rehearsals and the show, there are awards for both productions and individuals, including scholarships.
To date, Nazareth has been the only school to steadfastly refuse to participate. Why is anyone’s guess, but the one certain fact is that our students are missing out by not attending and if there is relevance to HS theatre, as I believe there is, they are also making themselves and the community look bad by doing so.

Every gym on every Tuesday and Friday night should be like Nazareth was on this night
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Liberty and Nazareth are talking about having girl-boy doubleheaders every year. Based on what we saw Friday night at Barry Boyer Court, that's a pretty good idea.
Some seats were available, but not many. This was a terrific crowd and a playoff atmosphere for the Liberty-Nazareth game and the kids responded with a hard-fought, intense game that rocked the place.
Tim Hinkel of the Express and I were both amazed at the atmosphere as we had to squeeze in behind the scorer's table. So were the coaches and the players who said it was a lot of fun.
"The crowd was awesome and we felt it on the court," said the Blue Eagles Bryce Higgs.
A lot of money was probably raised for the causes connected to the late Todd Rothrock and Derek Kehoe and that only added to a special night that had everyone, even losing coach Chad Landis, feeling good about it.
Ok, well "feeling good" may be too strong a phrase for Landis, who hoped his team would learn from it.
Nazareth was stronger and quicker than his team on this night and he knew it. Liberty was outplayed on the interior and didn't make enough outside shots.
But it's better to be losing games at the end of January than at the end of February.
Liberty will be back, but this night belonged to a Nazareth team that is clearly moving forward without center Karl Keglovits and ready to get on another late-season roll.
"We needed this," Higgs said, noting Nazareth just lost to Central Catholic on Tuesday. "Liberty's a great team and beating them, we should go on a run now."
Congrats to the Weave for again accurately picking a Nazareth win while me and a lot of others picked Liberty. Nice goin' Weave and great to see you at work at the front door.

At the conclusion of a pregame ceremony Friday night at Nazareth, Allison Rothrock, wife of the late Todd Rothrock and mother of current Blue Eagles player Matt Rothrock, wished both Liberty and Nazareth good luck and encouraged them to go out and make a new memory.
What followed was, indeed, a memorable game that Allison's husband -- the Nazareth grad and former Liberty coach -- would have loved.
Perhaps the Blue Eagles will remember it more fondly since they used a big second half to overcome a six-point halftime deficit and pull away to a 62-53 Lehigh Valley Conference win over the third-ranked team in the state.
Chuck Dibilio and Bryce Higgs combined for 40 points -- 15 of Higgs' 19 coming in the second half -- as an inspired, intense Nazareth team snapped Liberty's 11-game win streak.
The Blue Eagles held the Hurricanes to eight points in the third quarter and then outscored Liberty 9-2 over the final 1:38 to secure the program's biggest win since winning the LVC title a year ago.
A large crowd, on hand not only for a girl-boy doubleheader, but also to honor the memory of Rothrock and Nazareth basketball player Derek Kehoe, created a playoff-style atmosphere and the Blue Eagles looked a lot like the team that won six straight en route to their first LVC crown last season.
"This was a great atmosphere. emotional a little bit especially with Matt Rothrock on this team," Nazareth coach Joe Arndt said. "The guys wanted to get the win for Matty. They just stepped up and we got great efforts from a lot of kids, especially Higgs and Branden Kline inside."
Arndt said that Nazareth wasn't physical enough in a disappointing 62-56 loss to Central Catholic on Tuesday night
"We got beat up by Central and just weren't tough enough, but tonight we were much stronger," he said. "We rebounded the basketball and made our foul shots."
Nazareth (12-2, 6-2) was 20-for-25 at the line overall and 11-for-14 in the fourth quarter when the Blue Eagles went toe-to-toe with Liberty.
Darrun Hilliard, the Hurricanes' senior star, scored just seven points through the first three periods, but tried to take over the game in the fourth.
He made two 3-pointers within the first 80 seconds of the closing quarter, and scored 14 points overall in the final stanza. His second trey gave Liberty a brief 46-45 lead early in the fourth, but the 'Canes couldn't sustain it.
"Our defense revolved around Hilliard; we just tried to contain him the best we can," Higgs said. "As long as you can keep him to around 18, you have a chance to win."
Higgs, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, actually outscored Hilliard, 19-18.
"We really needed this game," Higgs said. "As for me, I just take what's there and try to get my points in the flow of the game. The big key was our rebounding and intensity. We're a transition team and we need to get the ball up the court. We need to keep the energy up."
Liberty also played with a lot of energy, but just couldn't stay in synch.
The Hurricanes had seven turnovers in the first quarter and seven more when things got away from them in the third quarter.
"That's the way basketball goes," Liberty coach Chad Landis said. "Give Nazareth credit because they outplayed us inside and got some key second-chance points. Normally we do a good job inside and control the glass, but tonight they worked a little harder than us.
"They won the transition game and they won around the glass and that's two big battles to win."
Izel Dickerson and Alex Akabogu, who had three 3-pointers in the first quarter, finished with 11 points apiece. The Hurricanes had eight 3-pointers overall, but lacked the offensive crispness that they have had during their win stretch.
Liberty will have to rebound quickly since it plays Pocono Mountain West in the Hoop Group Lehigh Valley Showcase Sunday night at Parkland.
"Every coach wants to run the table and go undefeated, but a loss isn't the worst thing in the world," Landis said. "If the kids and the coaches rebound, and you go back to the drawing board and learn from your mistakes, a loss can be a good thing."

Easton cruises by Northampton in LVC wrestling
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Easton prepped for a fevered-pitch schedule next week with a victory opposing coach Terry Daubert said was defined by its work ethic. Next up for the Red Rovers: more practice.
"This time of year, you train, get tired, rest and train again," Easton coach Steve Powell said. "It's about peaking for states."
Easton won 10 of 14 bouts, earning bonus points in five of those, to overwhelm Northampton 38-14 in a Lehigh Valley Conference match on Friday. The Senior Night victory included a combined 5-1 record for the senior starters, who led the Rovers (15-1, 7-0 LVC) to within one match of the conference title. But that match will be part of a hectic week.
Easton will wrestle Phillipsburg on Monday in their annual rivalry match that likely supercedes an LVC title. Two nights later, the Red Rovers will visit Bethlehem Catholic in a match that will decide the LVC title. And next Friday, they most likely will be the top-seeded favorite to defend their District 11 Class 3A duals title.
As a result, perhaps the most important day of that stretch comes Saturday, when Easton finally will practice. Weather has kept the team out of the practice room for much of the last two weeks, and Powell is looking forward to it.
"In 35 years [of coaching], I've never seen anything like this," Powell said. "We've always been able to get in the building. It's totally unusual."
The Red Rovers compensated with a sharp effort against Northampton. Senior Jalal Paige (285) opened the match with a fiery pin, and Easton won the next six bouts to take a 24-0 lead. The Rovers held their opponents to four or fewer points in seven bouts.
"Easton wrestled really, really well," said Daubert, the Northampton coach. "They kept us off balance. To sum up the whole thing, I thought they just worked a whole lot harder than we did."

Nazareth Area High School boys basketball team knocks off Liberty High School
By TOM HINKEL
The Express-Times
NAZARETH | The Nazareth Area High School boys basketball team has re-established itself as a force in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
Chuck Dibilio scored 21 points and Bryce Higgs added 19 Friday night as the Blue Eagles rallied to hand Liberty its first league loss, 62-53, before a near-capacity crowed at Ray Nunamaker Gymnasium.
There was a ceremony before the game in honor of former Nazareth player Derek Kehoe and ex-Liberty coach Todd Rothrock. Kehoe died of a rare form of cancer in 2006 and Rothrock passed away several days after suffering a stroke in 2008.
Nazareth (12-2 overall, 6-2 conference) trailed most of the way but took the lead for good when Higgs converted two free throws to put his team in front 47-46 with 5:51 remaining.
The partisan Nazareth crowd, energetic all night, rose to its feet and cheered wildly as the Blue Eagles gradually pulled away in the final minutes.
"The crowd was awesome," Higgs said. "You could feel the energy on the court."
"The crowd tonight was unbelievable," Nazareth coach Joe Arndt said. "It was a packed house and they really got into the game."
Liberty coach Chad Landis had high praise for the support from both teams.
"The crowd was terrific," he said. "The fans were into it on both sides. There was a lot of energy in the building. Every Friday night should be like this."
Liberty (13-2, 8-1), the top-ranked team in the Express-Times region and the last of the unbeatens in the LVC, led for most of the first three quarters before Nazareth seized control.

Nazareth Area High School girls basketball team defeats Liberty High School 53-39
By TOM MUGAVERO
The Express-Times
NAZARETH | Nazareth High School senior forward Erika Livermore complained to her coaches she wasn't getting calls from the officials when she took the ball to the hoop -- so they implored her to go to the basket with authority.
Livermore listened, and 19 foul shot attempts later, the Blue Eagles were able to finally shake off pesky Liberty.
Livermore, a third team all-state selection last season, canned 16 of 19 free throws and finished with 24 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Nazareth to a 53-39 Lehigh Valley Conference victory on Friday night at Nunemaker Gym.
"I challenged her at halftime for the first time in a while," Nazareth coach Rich Bickert said "We told her if you want those fouls called you gotta go up harder than you're going up. Make 'em call a foul. And she works on her foul shots. Coach Ed (Smith) shoots 100 with her after practice every night."
"I'm glad it paid off finally in a game that mattered," said Livermore, Nazareth's all-time leading girls scorer with 1,244 points. "We're still in the hunt for LVC (playoffs); we just have to win out. Every game matters. It doesn't matter who we're playing."
Senior forward Kim Owens chipped in with 13 points on 6 for 9 shooting from the field for the Blue Eagles (11-3 overall, 7-2 LVC), who began the night a game behind Parkland and Northampton in the North Division.
Senior guard Caitlyn Gary scored eight points while taking over more of the ball-handling duties. Nazareth committed 22 turnovers but just two in the game-clinching fourth quarter.
"Our bigs played well, Kimmy really played well tonight," Bickert said. "And Caitlyn did what she had to."
Liberty (8-6, 4-4) began the night tied with Easton for the East Division lead. The Hurricanes trailed 8-0, 17-8 and 28-20 before rallying each time, coming back to tie the score at 28-28 and finally 35-35 on freshman Kali Shumock's scooping putback to open the fourth quarter.
But the 'Canes eventually ran out of gas from the repeated comebacks, and Nazareth finally force-fed Livermore in the post on the way to outscoring the Hurricanes 18-4 the rest of the way.

Friday Night Forecast: Finally, no postponements to worry about
FROM KEITH GROLLER
It is rare to turn on the computer and not get flooded with e-mails from athletic directors talking about postponements.
You don't need me to tell you this winter has been brutal and we've still got to get through February.
All of the postponements and interruptions have taken away the momentum of this season. We've had some high energy games here and there, but no consistency.
So many times, potential big games have been moved. Allen-Easton, for example, has been shifted three times for example. It is now set for next Saturday afternoon, Feb. 5, at Easton.
And today I learned that a pretty good nonleague game between Allen and Pocono Mountain East has been switched to Saturday, Feb.12. That will be a challenging league tournament warmup for both the Canaries and Cardinals. It's at Pocono Mountain East by the way.
At least it looks like we're going to play basketball tonight and there are plenty of good matchups in the LVC and Colonial.
Here are my picks:
LEHIGH VALLEY CONFERENCE
Freedom 66, Dieruff 53 -- Patriots trying to build off buzzer-beater win over Whitehall.
Easton 53, Northampton 43 -- Even if they can't catch Liberty in East Division, Rovers will be the LVC wild card.
Emmaus 61, Becahi 53 -- Hungarter will get his 20, but the Green Hornets will clinch district berth.
Liberty 63, Nazareth 59 -- Making my first trip to Nazareth this basketball season and it will be nice to see The Weave. It will be nice to see Derek Kehoe and Todd Rothrock honored. Weave is predicting a 60-57 win for his Blue Eagles. I also see it close, but see Liberty finding a way to get it done thanks to Money and defense.
Allen 71, Parkland 49 -- Trojans have been making progress, but not enough to pull off this upset.
CCHS 66, Whitehall 59 -- Vikings continue their recent roll and severely wound Whitehall's district hopes.
COLONIAL LEAGUE
That was a big performance by Eric Frans (30 points) and a big win by Saucon Valley on Thursday night. That's going to be quite a scramble in the South Division. Wilson and Saucon seem secure for the tournament, but will a third team do better than 10-6 to get the last slot over Northern Lehigh? ND and Salisbury have the best shot, but they both have four league losses.
Bangor 71, Northern Lehigh 63 -- I saw the first meeting between these two and the Bulldogs didn't know what hit them. This will be much closer in Slatington, but the Slaters -- as stated earlier -- are going to run the table in this league.
Palmerton 51, Catasauqua 44 -- Blue Bombers host games on back-to-back days with Salisbury coming to town on Saturday.
Pen Argyl 54, Northwestern 49 -- Talked to Green Knights' coach Michael Frew about the Colonial League Coaches vs. Cancer program the other night. He's got the right perspective on things. More details on the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraisers are coming up. First Coaches vs. Cancer game is Saturday when Southern Lehigh visits Notre Dame at 1. Each school has special things lined up for this very worthwhile cause.
Salisbury 53, Palisades 50 -- The Ship will be rebuilt, bigger and better than ever! It is heartwarming the way people in the community and around the league have responded to what was initially a very sad crime.
Wilson 60, Southern Lehigh 52 -- Matchup of two area basketball's most veteran coaches. Warriors just have more athletes this year. And don't worry Stan "The Man" Swartz, I won't hold your non-appearance in Slatington against you. With this crazy schedule, it's hard to keep up.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY CONFERENCE
ES North 63, Lehighton 54 -- Things are still looking up for the Tribe.
PM East 64, Stroudsburg 60 -- A Mountie upset wouldn't shock me, however.
PM West 79, ES South 49 -- I don't know how many people will come from the Poconos to see West play Liberty at Parkland on Sunday night, but that game deserves some people in the stands.
SATURDAY GAMES
Emmaus over Boyertown, Stroudsburg over Freedom, Nazareth over ES South, Saucon Valley over North Schuylkill, Notre Dame over Southern Lehigh, Wilson over Lehighton, P'burg over Catty,
SUNDAY HOOP GROUP GAMES AT PARKLAND
Paul VI of Virginia over Parkland, Allen over Gill St. Bernard, St. Benedict's over Penn Wood and Liberty over Pocono Mountain West.

Nazareth senior scores 24 points to lead Blue Eagles to key LVC victory.
FROM KEITH GROLLER
As she went to the rim in the first half without getting the whistles she wanted, Erika Livermore grew frustrated.
Nazareth's coaches challenged her at halftime to take the ball harder to the basket. They prodded her to make it impossible for the officials not to call Liberty's defenders for contact in the paint.
Livermore did as she was asked, lifting her team in the process.
She took just two official field-goal attempts in the second half but went to the foul line 14 times, connecting on 12 free throws. She finished with a game-high 24 points as the Blue Eagles pulled away for a 53-39 Lehigh Valley Conference girls basketball win Friday night.
Intent on returning to the LVC playoffs, Nazareth (11-3 overall, 7-2 LVC) stayed a game behind Northampton and Parkland in the LVC North Division with five league games left. Two of those three teams figure to qualify for the four-team league tournament.
Livermore scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half Friday as the Blue Eagles rebounded from Tuesday's one-point loss to Central Catholic. She also finished with 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. Her nine points in the final quarter helped the Blue Eagles outscore the Hurricanes (8-6, 4-4) 18-6 over the last eight minutes after they started the quarter ahead by just two points.
"They played a really great game," Livermore said. "Liberty's never a pushover. They lost five really great seniors from last year, but everyone's good. We didn't come out with a very good mentality at first. We were running through things, but not as hard as we should. In the second half, I think we really pulled it together."
Livermore's touch at the foul line proved critical. She hit 16 of 19 free throws, making eight straight in one stretch and her final five of the night, as the Blue Eagles outscored the Hurricanes by 12 points from the foul line.
"She works on her foul shots," Nazareth coach Rich Bickert said. "[Assistant] coach Ed [Smith] shoots 100 with her every night after practice. He doesn't let her leave till she shoots 100. It's good to see that that work paid off."
Kim Owens and Caitlyn Gary, who join Livermore as senior starters, also came up with clutch shots as the more experienced Blue Eagles put Liberty away. Owens scored eight of her 13 points in the second half on 4-for-5 shooting. Gary added eight points, including a 3-pointer that gave Nazareth a 44-37 lead with 2:42 to go, nine rebounds and three assists.
The Hurricanes pushed Nazareth all night, but several prolonged scoring slumps doomed them. Liberty managed just four points in the game's final 7:39 after tying the game at 35. The Hurricanes also went 5 minutes, 13 seconds without scoring to start the game and opened the second quarter with a 4-minute, 14-second dry spell.
Jody Chickey led Liberty with 13 points and also collected six steals. J.J. Hilliard added 10 points and C.J. Hilliard scored seven as Liberty failed to pick up a win that would have boosted its chances of winning a tight three-team race with Easton and Bethlehem Catholic in the LVC East Division.
"We took some risks, and they hit the shots they needed to win the game," Liberty coach Amy Yencho said.
Nazareth has adopted a must-win stance for the rest of its league games as it tries to return to the LVC tournament for a second straight year. The Blue Eagles face Easton and Parkland in league games next week before playing three LVC games (against Whitehall, Allen and Northampton) in the final week of the regular season.
"Our backs are against the wall, and so be it," Bickert said. "Parkland's beating teams by a couple points, but they're winning. That's all that matters. We've got a lot of games to play."
